One dead in Athens demonstration clashes

A man died Wednesday in Athens after Greek anti-austerity demonstrations, police said, as hundreds of communist unionists battled anarchist protesters throwing firebombs for control of a key square in the capital.

The man in his fifties died in hospital, police said, declining to speculate on the cause of death, but Greek media said he was wounded on the sidelines of a gathering of 50,000 people outside the Greek parliament.

Media reports quoted the man s wife outside the hospital as saying that he had suffered head wounds during the clashes.

But a hospital statement said the man did "not have any injuries" when admitted with "a flat cardiogramme". Doctors efforts to revive him were in vain, the statement added.

News of the death which was being investigated by the public prosecutor came as a bombshell as lawmakers were debating the latest anti-austerity legislation.

Right-wing opposition leader Antonis Samaras accused the government of socialist Prime Minister George Papandreou of having "lost control of the situation" and a socialist deputy questioned the police strategy to quell the violence.

At least 16 people were hurt in the clashes in Syntagma square near the parliament building, most of them suffering head injuries from stones, firebombs and other missiles, the health ministry said earlier.

As tens of thousands joined anti-austerity demonstrations on the second day of a general strike, Skai television broadcast images of a captured communist being beaten by dozens of assailants in the square.

Masked youths attacked with firebombs hundreds of communist unionists tasked with maintaining order during the Athens demonstration, which capped a 48-hour general strike called by unions against the government s economic policies.

The communists counter-charged and pushed the attackers back, and the two sides began throwing stones at each other with the police initially keeping back.

Oil prices fall after Gaddafi's death

Posted:

Although it should take months for Libya s oil industry to recover and for the full impact to be felt on world markets.

Oil fell $1.08 to $85.03 per barrel in New York on Thursday. At the pump, the price of gasoline was flat at about $3.47 a gallon.

Before the Libyan civil war, Libya had exported 1.5 million barrels of oil a day, or 2 percent of global demand. When Libya stopped exporting most of that oil eight months ago, it helped push the price of oil to $114 a barrel.

Oil has also become cheaper since then because of falling demand in a slowing global economy.

Libya sits atop Africa s largest proven reserves of conventional crude. Before the civil war, it was the world s 12th-largest exporter, mostly to Europe. Analysts estimate it is currently producing close to 400,000 barrels per day.

The major foreign oil firms that had operated in Libya before the start of the civil war, such as Italy s Eni SpA and Spain s Repsol, are starting to return and assess the situation.

Even if little damage was done to the fields or the infrastructure, political uncertainty and security concerns will delay the industry s recovery. Analysts say it could be another year before the country hits its pre-war output.

In a research note, Eurasia Group said expectations are that Libya s output could reach 600,000 barrels per day by the end of the year.

The country relies on oil exports for the overwhelming majority of its foreign revenue.

Loan installments are provided under condition that Athens convinces EU and IMF auditors it is undertaking sufficient measures to bring its finances under control.

The latest tranche was due in September, but has been delayed, and the Greek government has rushed to implement additional austerity measures to unlock the funds before it runs out of cash next month.

The IMF s portion of the pending disbursement is 2.2 billion euros, with the 17-nation eurozone providing 5.8 billion euros.

Rice refused to comment on reports of divisions between the IMF and European leaders, and among EU leaders themselves, over how to resolve the eurozone debt crisis, and the reported possibility that a EU summit on the matter, scheduled Sunday, may be postponed.

A Greek newspaper earlier reported a disagreement between the EU and the IMF about Greece s long-term ability to pay its debt.

According to the daily Kathimerini, "the IMF is maintaining a tougher stance vis-a-vis the Greek debt and how viable it could be" and wants a new economic adjustment program drafted, as it considers the EU s estimates "too optimistic".
