Cabinet committee meets after pre-dawn attacks: US told to vacate Shamsi base; Nato supplies stopped

ISLAMABAD, Nov 26: Furious over the pre-dawn Nato attacks on border posts, the government on Saturday reacted sharply by indefinitely closing down supply routes used by western forces in Afghanistan and once again asking the United States to vacate an airbase previously used for drone operations. The government also said it would carry out a thorough review of its cooperation with the US and Nato.
The retaliatory decisions were taken at an emergency meeting of the Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC), the country's highest forum for defence policy consultation and coordination. The meeting was convened to discuss the Nato air strikes and make strategies for a response...

Strikes kill 25 soldiers

President asks CJ for early hearing of ZAB reference

ISLAMABAD, Nov 26: Within 24 hours of the Supreme Court's decision of dismissing the government's petition for a review of the judgement on the controversial National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), President Asif Ali Zardari urged Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry on Saturday to fix an early date for hearing of the reference regarding the 1979 "judicial murder" of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
The president also urged the chief justice to hear the case on a day-to-day basis so that it may be concluded soon...

India calls for action against Mumbai siege plotters

Yemeni jets kill 80 anti-govt tribesmen

SANAA, Nov 26: A security official said on Saturday Yemeni warplanes killed 80 anti-government tribesmen who had overrun part of a military camp in the Arhab region north of the capital Sanaa.

Unrest casts shadow over Egypt election

CAIRO, Nov 26: Egyptian protesters demanding an end to army rule clashed with police firing tear gas in central Cairo on Saturday in a flare-up that cast another shadow over a parliamentary election billed as the nation's first free vote in decades.
Two days of voting begin on Monday in the first stage of a complex, drawn-out election that will be completed in January. One protester, 21-year-old Ahmed Sayed died after being hit by a riot police vehicle in the clashes. Islamists win landmark election in Morocco

LAHORE, Nov 26: The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee announced on Saturday that the Muharram moon had been sighted and Ashura would fall on Dec 6 (Tuesday).
Mufti Muneebur Rehman, chairman of the committee, told journalists at the Aiwan-i-Auqaf that the moon was not sighted in Lahore, but evidence was received from other areas, including Islamabad and Jhelum.—APP...
