NA passes pro-women bill unanimously

ISLAMABAD, Nov 15: After being blocked twice last month, a landmark private bill seeking to penalise evils like the so-called "marriage with the holy Quran", forced wedlock, and depriving women from inheritance finally got through the National Assembly on Tuesday, when the house also voiced outrage at the recent murder of three Hindu youths in Sindh.

Some trifling objections that had stalled the Anti-Women Practices (Criminal Law Amendment) Bill on two private members' days of the previous session of the house were not raised this time when, at the end of the day's sitting, the house voted unanimously for the draft, which must be now passed also by the Senate to become law, to provide for some stern prison terms and heavy fines...

Normal trade ties with India from February

NEW DELHI, Nov 15: India and Pakistan agreed on Tuesday to resume normal trade ties in February, paving the way to end decades of political mistrust and military rivalry.

"We have turned the corner," Pakistan's Commerce Secretary Zafar Mehmood told reporters at a joint news conference with his Indian counterpart Rahul Khullar. "We are talking of a complete normalisation roadmap."..

Seven die in drone attack

MIRAMSHAH, Nov 15: Seven people were killed when a US drone attacked a residential compound in Miramshah town of North Waziristan on Tuesday morning.

Sources said the drone fired two missiles at the house in the Darpakhel Serai locality, killing four people on the spot and injuring three others...

ISLAMABAD, Nov 15: A senior member of the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz indicated on Tuesday that the party planned to quit the National Assembly in order to compel the government to call early general elections.

Talking to reporters outside the Supreme Court here on Tuesday, League MNA Khwaja Mohammad Asif said the party leadership was considering the option of quitting the National Assembly and may take a decision to that effect within two months...

Ambassador Haqqani summoned

WASHINGTON, Nov 15: Ambassador Husain Haqqani has been summoned to Islamabad for "routine consultations", sources at the Pakistan Embassy told Dawn, rejecting suggestions that he has been called to clarify confusions over an alleged letter to senior US officials about differences between civilian and military establishments.

"Yes, he is going to Islamabad but for routine consultations," said a senior embassy source. "There are strains and stresses in US and Pakistan relations that need immediate attention."..

FIA unfroze two bank accounts during NICL probe, SC told

ISLAMABAD, Nov 15: The Supreme Court appeared surprised on Tuesday when it was informed that the Federal Investigation Agency had on its own unfrozen two bank accounts of Rs19.3 million which it had frozen on apprehensions of containing dirty money during the course of investigation into the multi-billion-rupee National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) scam.

The FIA had frozen the accounts of Messers Agro Tractors (Pvt) Ltd in Al Baraka Bank (Rs1.8 million) and Messers Al-Tahoor in Allied Bank Limited (over Rs17 million)...

Power tariff hike on cabinet agenda today

MULTAN, Nov 15: Former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who ended his 18 years of association with the Pakistan People's Party on Monday, has called for an independent election commission and said it is time to go to the people for a fresh mandate.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said the present leadership of the PPP had no solution to the country's external and internal problems and that neither President Asif Ali Zardari nor Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had the intellectual depth to solve people's problems. Mr Qureshi said he would announce his future political plan during a visit to Ghotki in Sindh on Nov 27...
