Memogate storm: US affirms support for democracy

WASHINGTON, Nov 19: The US State Department stressed the need to continue the democratic process in Pakistan as Ambassador Husain Haqqani headed home to appear before a parliamentary committee to try and put a lid on the 'memogate' scandal.

"We clearly support the democratically elected government of Pakistan, as well as its constitutional processes," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told a briefing in Washington....

Hike in power tariff won't do, revamp needed: IMF

ISLAMABAD, Nov 19: The International Monetary Fund has said Pakistan will have to make structural and management changes in the power sector to solve its problems because price changes are not enough to improve the situation.

Speaking at a press conference after attending a seminar on "revival of Pakistan economy" here on Saturday, the IMF's Assistant Director for Middle East and Central Asia, Adnan Mazarei, said the power crisis and decline in investments were key impediments to growth of the economy and hampering efforts to reduce unemployment....

Nawaz threatens to move SC

ISLAMABAD: Nawaz Sharif threatened on Saturday to take the memo controversy to the Supreme Court if the government did not conduct an impartial inquiry into the matter.

"If the government does not carry out an impartial inquiry and ease the nation's misgivings, the matter will definitely reach the Supreme Court. And we will take it (to the SC)," Mr Sharif said while talking to reporters after attending a religious function at Mandra, in the suburbs of Islamabad....

People flee Kurram amid heavy shelling

KALAYA, Nov 19: At least 10 militants were killed and several others injured as helicopter gunships pounded hideouts of militants for hours on Saturday in different areas of Upper Kurram.

Taliban strongholds and hideouts in Adokhel, Mir Kalamkhel, Jabba, Sama Bazaar and Mamozai came under attack. The shelling was so intense at times that people started leaving their areas....

Qadhafi's son Saif arrested

TRIPOLI, Nov 19: Muammar Qadhafi's son Saif al-Islam has been captured, Libya's new authorities announced on Saturday, ending a three-month manhunt for the murdered dictator's longtime heir apparent.

Video footage showed the younger Qadhafi, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity, being hauled off into captivity in a northwestern hill town after getting off a flight from the desert south where he was seized....

Afghan jirga backs troop deal with US

KABUL, Nov 19: Afghan elders on Saturday endorsed a strategic partnership deal with the US which could see its troops remain on Afghan soil for years, while insisting on a string of conditions after four days of talks.

Their declaration at the end of the loya jirga stressed terms including that US nationals committing crimes in Afghanistan must not face immunity and that the US must side with Afghanistan if a third country tries to attack it....

Agha appointed NAB prosecutor general

Explosion claims lives of two FC men in Sui
--------------------------------------------------------------

QUETTA, Nov 19: Two personnel of Frontier Corps were killed and three others injured when a landmine exploded in Sui tehsil of Dera Bugti district on Saturday.

Sources said that two FC vehicles were passing through the Janobari area when one of the vehicles hit the landmine planted by unknown people. The vehicle blew up and two FC men died on the spot....

UN slams 'plot to kill' Saudi envoy
--------------------------------------------------------------

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 19: The UN General Assembly adopted a Saudi-sponsored resolution on Friday condemning "the plot to assassinate" Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States. The resolution, proposed by Saudi Arabia and supported by the United States, was passed with 106 votes in favour, nine against and 40 abstentions.

The resolution called upon Iran "to comply with all of its obligations under international law"....
