Sherry makes comeback, gets Haqqani's post

ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: The government named on Wednesday member of parliament and rights activist Shehrbano (Sherry) Rehman as ambassador to the US, a day after Husain Haqqani had been asked to resign over allegations that he had sought Washington's help against a possible military takeover.

"Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has appointed Ms Sherry Rehman as Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States of America," a handout issued by the Prime Minister's Office said...

45 militants killed in Kurram, Orakzai clashes

PARACHINAR/KALAYA, Nov 23: As clashes between security forces and militants continued in Kurram and Orakzai agencies on Wednesday, officials claimed that 45 militants were killed in ground action and air strikes.

Reports reaching here said that two security personnel were killed, 15 were injured and three were missing. Bodies of the three missing soldiers were later found...

Gen Kayani calls on president

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani called on President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday soon after the appointment of Ms Sherry Rehman as Pakistan's new ambassador to the US.

"The army chief met the president at the presidency where he was invited to attend a special investiture ceremony held to confer the award of Nishan-i-Imtiaz (military) on Gen Hou Shusen, Deputy Chief of General Staff of China," President's Spokesman Farhatullah Babar said...

Nawaz petition wants SC to unravel memo conspiracy

ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: Just when it appeared that the memogate brouhaha was over, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday a petition requesting it to help unravel what he termed a "dreadful conspiracy" to demonise the armed forces.

The former prime minister wants the court to summon all respondents in his petition — President Asif Ali Zardari, former ambassador Husain Haqqani, American citizen Mansoor Ijaz, Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, ISI chief Lt-Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha and foreign and interior secretaries — to explain the "detestable, despicable and treacherous memorandum"...

A dazed NA makes quick work of bills

ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: Apparently dazed by dramatic developments outside that it feigned to ignore, the National Assembly made a quick work of three government bills on Wednesday, while Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani took time from a hectic schedule to pacify an estranged lawmaker of the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP).

Everybody expected the government to explain Tuesday's resignation of Pakistan's ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani forced by a perceived intrigue that had rocked the house last week and a word, and possible comments by members, about the appointment of their colleague and former information minister Sherry Rehman as his successor...

SC advises Awan to concentrate on NRO review plea

ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: The Supreme Court appeared to be at a loss for words on Wednesday when Dr Babar Awan, the counsel for the government, asked why it had not resumed the hearing of Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan's pending petition relating to the bribing of politicians by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the 1990s.

The petition in question had accused the ISI of distributing funds among politicians, including former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, to help them create the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI)...

Deputy conveners of the party's coordination committee Dr Farooq Sattar and Anis Qaimkhani, in their letters to the president and the chief justice, drew the attention to what they termed a plot hatched by Dr Mirza to incite hatred and engineer ethnic riots in Sindh, particularly in Karachi...

Email account of presidency's spokesman hacked

ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: The email account of Presidency's Spokesman Farhatullah Babar was hacked soon after the resignation of Husain Haqqani as ambassador to the US on Tuesday night and the text of a 'memo' was sent from it to some people and the hacker claimed that it was the 'real memo' delivered to former US military chief Admiral Mike Mullen, sources in the Federal Investigation Agency told Dawn on Wednesday.

The sources said Mr Babar contacted the FIA chief and asked him to look into the matter and get his email account restored. A few hours after receiving the complaint, FIA experts managed to get the account restored.—Syed Irfan Raza

Two policemen killed in attack
