Fire at Kolkata hospital; 2 dead; many feared trapped Posted: <p> </p><p>A massive fire broke out at Kolkata s AMRI Hospital at around 3:30 am today, killing at least two people. While 25 patients have been evacuated so far, many more are still feared trapped inside the hospital building.</p><p> </p><p>Around 20 fire engines are at the spot trying to douse the fire. Firemen are helping in rescue operations, but the narrow road leading to the hospital is reportedly hampering their work.</p><p> </p><p>At least 40 patients along with some doctors and nurses are still said to be trapped inside the hospital. Local TV channels showed some patients waving white flags from their windows. One patient was seen trying to get down from a window with the saline bottle still attached to his arm.</p><p> </p><p>The fire started in the basement of one of the three buildings of the hospital, Annexe 1. The other two building remain unaffected.</p><p> </p><p>This is the second major fire at the hospital in Dhakuria in south Kolkata. The first one happened in 2008. The reason of the fire is not yet known.</p> |
Posted: <p> </p><p>According to initial reports, a powerful blast occurred in the early hours of Friday in Gulistan Johar near Safoora Chorangi, injuring six people. Two Rangers officials were among the injured.</p><p> </p><p>Rangers, police and rescue teams have reached the spot after the explosion and started rescue operation. The law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area after the blast.<br /> </p> |
Posted: <p> </p><p>Severe winds slammed Scotland on Thursday, snarling transport and leaving thousands without power as gusts in some areas surpassed 100 miles per hour (160 kph).</p><p> </p><p>Britain s Met Office which issued a "red alert" for parts of Scotland said a wind speed of 151 mph was recorded on a summit in Aberdeenshire. On lower ground, 105 mph winds hit Tulloch Bridge in Inverness, it said.</p><p> </p><p>The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland said a wide area of the country would be affected and that "people could be putting themselves at considerable risk" by traveling in such weather conditions.</p><p> </p><p>The gale-force winds led authorities to close many schools and most major bridges.</p><p> </p><p>Glasgow Airport said 37 flights were canceled, while Edinburgh Airport said 21 were canceled and three diverted.</p><p> </p><p>The wind made operations "extremely challenging," the Edinburgh Airport said on its web site. Meanwhile, train schedules also were disrupted.</p><p> </p><p>Scottish Hydro said "thousands" of customers were without power, mostly in the west of Scotland. It said it expects the situation to "develop throughout the day" as the storm moves east.</p><p> </p><p>The severe weather also hit parts of northern England, with Cumbria experiencing heavy rain and widespread localized flooding.</p><p> </p><p>A Royal Air Force helicopter rescued two people from a car trapped in rising waters in Aysgarth, in Yorkshire, northern England.<br /> </p> |
UN court aims to start Mladic trial March 27 Posted: <p> </p><p>At a status conference Thursday for the former Bosnian Serb military chief, presiding judge Alphons Orie said he aims to hold a pre-trial conference March 26 and prosecution opening statements the following day.</p><p> </p><p>Also Thursday, Mladic pleaded not guilty to charges linked to a new allegation filed recently by prosecutors that Bosnian Serb troops executed more than 30 Muslim prisoners in the eastern Bosnian town of Bisina in July 1995.</p><p> </p><p>Mladic had previously refused to enter pleas to any of the charges against him. Judges had entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.<br /> </p> |
ICRC makes emergency appeal for $1.2 billion Posted: <p> </p><p>The International Committee of the Red Cross made an emergency appeal for $1.2 billion Thursday, saying the Arab uprisings had put severe strain on its resources.</p><p> </p><p>"Unexpected and simultaneous humanitarian crises put the ICRC to the test," its president Jakob Kellenberger told journalists in Geneva of the year past.</p><p> </p><p>He made an appeal for 1.15 billion Swiss francs (930 million euros/$1.2 billion) to deal with acute crises -- citing "sudden emergencies in the Middle East and North Africa" that killed, wounded and caused suffering to tens of thousands of people in countries like Lybia, Syria, Somalia and Ivory Coast.</p><p> </p><p>The ICRC s 2012 budget included 970 million Swiss francs for field operations and 181 million for support provided by its headquarters in Geneva.</p><p> </p><p>"In 2012, Afghanistan will be the ICRC s largest humanitarian operation in budgetary terms, with an expected expenditure of 89 million Swiss francs," Kellenberger said.</p><p> </p><p>"Other major ICRC operations include those in Somalia, with a budget of 70.2 million francs, in Iraq, with a planned expenditure of 67.3 million francs, and in Sudan, which is expected to cost 55 million francs."</p><p> </p><p>In Libya, an ICRC team was deployed to the eastern city of Benghazi just a few days after violence erupted in February, said Kellenberger.</p><p> </p><p>"The fact that we had personnel on the spot was essential in facilitating dialogue with all parties to the conflict and in obtaining enhanced and more secure access to the people who most need our help."<br /> </p> |
SC to host Intl Jurists Conference next year Posted: <p> </p><p>A full court meeting was held on Thursday in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Islamabad, under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.</p><p> </p><p>At the beginning of the meeting, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan formally welcomed the four newly-elevated judges to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He hoped that with the addition of these learned judges to the apex court, the capacity of the court will be increased which should result into expeditious disposal of cases.</p><p> </p><p>The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan paid glowing tributes to the outstanding legal career of Hon’ble Justice Muhammad Sair Ali both as a lawyer and a Judge. The Hon’ble Chief Justice thanked the other Hon’ble Judges for making it convenient to attend this full court meeting which is being traditionally convened to say good bye to a member of the apex court on his retirement.</p><p> </p><p>The full court meeting observed that due to involvement of the judges in larger benches seized with many important constitutional cases, and the shortage of judges the disposal rate could not be sustained at the required level. However, it was felt that in view of the recent elevation of the four judges, the disposal rate should mark considerable increase.</p><p> </p><p>The full court meeting also discussed the issue of holding of an International Jurists Conference under the auspices of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) at Islamabad in April, 2012. The meeting decided that a committee comprising of the four senior most Judges of the Supreme Court may take all necessary decisions to convene the said conference in a most befitting manner.<br /> </p> |
Two dead in Virginia Tech shooting Posted: <p> </p><p>Violence returned Thursday to Virginia Tech, the scene in 2007 of the deadliest school shooting in US history, when two people were shot dead including a campus police officer.</p><p> </p><p>Police refused to confirm reports that the second fatality might have been the shooter himself, even as the 31,000-student university lifted an afternoon-long lockdown and declared there was no longer an "active threat."</p><p> </p><p>But when asked if the gunman was at large, Virginia State Police spokesman Bob Carpentieri cryptically told reporters: "Investigators feel confident that they have located the person."</p><p> </p><p>The slain police officer, a four-year veteran of Virginia Tech s own security force, was shot and killed during a noon-hour "routine traffic stop" in a parking lot near a sports facility.</p><p> </p><p>"Witnesses reported to police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive," the university said in a statement.</p><p> </p><p>"At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased."</p><p> </p><p>No names were disclosed, but Carpentieri said a weapon was found close to the second victim, who he described as a white male. He also said the gunman was not the motorist who the slain police officer had pulled over.</p><p> </p><p>Virginia Tech was the scene of the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in US history in April 2007 when an English major, Seung-Hui Cho, 23, killed 32 people before taking his own life. Twenty-five others were wounded.</p><p> </p><p>The gunman was described as a white male in a maroon hooded sweatshirt and grey sweatpants. Maroon is the official color of Virginia Tech.</p><p> </p><p>Police with handguns drawn and assault rifles at the ready swarmed across the campus as students and staff took refuge for four hours in their dormitories, offices and a leisure center.<br /> </p> |
Khanewal: Tragic end to attempt of love marriage Posted: <p> </p><p>The tragic incident occurred in Ariya Nagar near Khanewal. According to details, parents of the ill-fated girl, Kiran, were planning the weeding of their daughter against her will. Kiran telephoned her relative Shairi, a resident of Sahiwal, and decided to elope with him.</p><p> </p><p>The villagers caught Shairi and Kiran when they were fleeing the village upon which both of them decided to end their life. Shairi opened fire on Kiran with his pistol in presence of police and villagers and killed her on the spot and then tried to commit suicide but the bullet stuck and villagers nabbed him. The villagers also tortured Shairi who was later shifted to a hospital by Police.<br /> </p> |
Islamabad: Terrorism attempt foiled, five arrested Posted: <p> </p><p>According to police, the alleged terrorists were arrested from Police Station Shahzad town area. Police said that the terrorists belong to Kabal area near Swat and are involved in attacks on security forces convoys.</p><p> </p><p>Those arrested were identified as Dil Aram Khan, Hazrat Ali, Rasool Khan, Nadir Khan and Adrees Khan.<br /> </p> |
Murree: Roof collapse claims one life Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, the roof of the house was in dilapidated condition and caved in on Thursday, killing a woman and critically injuring a man.</p><p> </p><p>The Rescue 1122 team reached the spot and started rescue operation. Decision to open NATO supply routes up to Pakistan: Pentagon Posted: <p> </p><p>US and NATO forces in Afghanistan will receive the supplies they need to perform their missions regardless of Pakistan’s closure of its border with Afghanistan, Pentagon officials said today.</p><p> </p><p>Pentagon Press Secretary George Little and Navy Capt. John Kirby hope that Pakistan will reopen the border between the countries and return its troops to the border coordination centers. The centers are designed to avoid incidents like that of Nov. 26 when NATO ordnance accidently killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.</p><p> </p><p>The two spoke during a Pentagon news conference.</p><p> </p><p>The war effort in Afghanistan continues unabated by the closures, Little said. “We’re well-aware of the closures and potential impacts,” he said. “To date, there’s been no significant impact to our ability to provide for the war effort. That being said, we do believe that these are important supply routes, and we hope that in the near future they can be reopened.”</p><p> </p><p>Good logistics systems are among the crucial factors for success in any military operation, and redundancy is key to logistics. About 30 percent of the supplies to NATO and US troops in Afghanistan travel through Pakistan. Other routes are taking up the slack.</p><p> </p><p>NATO International Security Assistance Force commander Marine Corps Gen. John R. Allen “is comfortable” with his supply situation now, Kirby said. “So there have been no major muscle movements to alter the flow of logistics,” he said.</p><p> </p><p>In response to a question, the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Captain John F. Kirby added that the decision to open the supply routes is up to the Government of Pakistan.</p><p> </p><p>On the subject of President Zardari and rumours of his illness, Little said that while they did not want to comment, if he was suffering from an illness, they wished him well.<br /> </p> |
Nankana Sahib: Landlord poured acid into barbers eyes Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, an influential landlord Sajjad Haider of village Syedwala, Nankana Sahib misbehaved with wife of barber Ibrahim. Both of them exchange harsh words when Ibrahim asked Sajjad to refrain from misbehaving with his wife.</p><p> </p><p>Keeping the grudge, Sajjad along with his six accomplices brutally tortured Ibrahim and poured acid into his eyes. Ibrahim has lost his eye-sight and was shifted to hospital in critical condition.</p><p> </p><p>Police have registered a case and arrested Sajjad Haider and all his accomplices.<br /> </p> |

They were wanted by the police in several cases of target killing.</p><p> </p><p>The accused have admitted the killing of journalist Babar Wali. Okara: School fight claims life of 7-year-old boy Posted: <p> </p><p>According to information, two students, Farhan and Ali Haider, of a private school of Sabir Piya Town in Okara exchanged harsh words on a minor issue which turned out in a scuffle at the end.</p><p> </p><p>Ali Haider fell unconscious during the fight. He was rushed to District Headquarters Hospital where he died. According to the doctors, the cause of death was heart attack. The heirs of the deceased have termed the death as accidental and refused any inquiry.<br /> </p> |
Karachi: Two target killers arrested Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, Malir City police on a tip-off arrested Shahnawaz alias Shaitan and Nadeem alias Manhoos. The arrested target killers are stated to be involved in killing 52 people and firing on police bus in Chakra Goth area.</p><p> </p><p>Police have started investigation and conducting more raids on information collected from the arrested target killers.<br /> </p> |
