| Three killed in Karachi violence Posted: <p> </p><p><span style="">According to police, some unidentified persons shot dead a youth, Shahnawaz, in Purana Golimar area while another incident of target killing took place in Rahri Goth area where miscreants shot dead 55-year-old Ali Gohar.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="">In yet another incident, a 40-year-old man, Parvaiz Ilahi was shot dead during resistance in a dacoity attempt.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="">Meanwhile, two people, Abdul Lateef and 55-year-old Zeenat Bibi, were injured in resistance during dacoity attempts in Kala Pul and North Nazimabad areas respectively.</span></p> |
| 6.8 magnitude quake hit southwest Mexico Posted: <p> </p><p>A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Guerrero state in southwest Mexico at 19:47 local time on Saturday (0147 GMT Sunday), the U.S. Geological Survey reported.</p><p> </p><p>The earthquake rattled buildings in Mexico City and seemed to go on for an unusually long period. There were no immediate reports of damage but residents ran out of buildings and gathered in the streets outside.<br /> </p> |
| Moderate quake hit southwestern Japan Posted: <p> </p><p>A moderate 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan s southwestern islands on Sunday, but there was no tsunami warning or immediate reports of damage, officials said.</p><p> </p><p>The quake hit at 10:22 am (0122 GMT) in Kagoshima prefecture, some 1,300 kilometres (807 miles) from Tokyo, at a depth of 28 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.</p><p> </p><p>There was no danger of a tsunami resulting from the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.<br /> </p> |

| Pakistan threatens to shot down intruding US drones Posted: <p> </p><p>Pakistan will shoot down any US drone that intrudes its air space per new directives, a senior Pakistani official told NBC News on Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>According to the new Pakistani defense policy, "Any object entering into our air space, including US drones, will be treated as hostile and be shot down," a senior Pakistani military official told NBC News.</p><p> </p><p>The policy change comes just weeks after a deadly NATO attack on Pakistani military checkpoints accidentally killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, prompting Pakistani officials to order all US personnel out of a remote airfield in Pakistan.</p><p> </p><p>Pakistan told the US to vacate Shamsi Air Base by December 11.</p><p> </p><p>A senior military official from Quetta, confirmed to NBC News on Saturday that the evacuation of the base, used for staging classified drone flights directed against militants, “will be completed on Sunday.</p><p> </p><p>Pakistan s Frontier Corps security forces took control of the base Saturday evening after most US military personnel left. Civil aviation officials also moved in Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani had issued multiple directives since the Nov. 26 NATO attack, which included orders to shoot down US drones, senior military officials confirmed to NBC News on Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>It was unclear whether orders to fire upon incoming US drones was part of the initial orders.<br /> </p> |
| US troops could stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014: Crocker Posted: <p> </p><p>The American ambassador to Afghanistan on Saturday raised the possibility that United States combat troops could stay in the country beyond the 2014 deadline that the White House had set for their withdrawal.</p><p> </p><p>The ambassador, Ryan C. Crocker, speaking at a roundtable event with a small group of journalists, said that if the Afghan government wanted American troops to stay longer, the withdrawal could be slowed. “They would have to ask for it,” he said.</p><p> </p><p>“I could certainly see us saying, ‘Yeah, makes sense.’ ”</p><p> </p><p>He emphasized, however, that no such decision had been made.</p><p> </p><p>The US ambassador said that he does not think this week s deadly suicide bombing at a Shiite shrine in Kabul will spark a sectarian war between religious groups in Afghanistan.</p><p> </p><p>He said that Tuesday s attack, which killed 56 people and wounded more than 160 others, might have been orchestrated by a consortium of militant groups outside the country.</p><p> </p><p>Crocker, who spent three years as US ambassador to Pakistan, said he could not say authoritatively that the bombing was carried by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.</p><p> </p><p>He said that the group was weak, and he doubted that the group had any Afghan affiliate.</p><p> </p><p>"They were a pretty seriously weakened organization when I was there (in Pakistan)," he said. "It could have been a consortium, but I don t think it was a consortium that was put together in this country."<br /> </p> |
| Portuguese pensioners in anti-austerity march Posted: <p> </p><p>A few hundreds pensioners took to the streets of Portugal on Saturday (December 10) against austerity measures imposed by an EU/IMF bailout.</p><p> </p><p>The pensioners in Lisbon chanted,"The cost of living rises and the people can t stand it," as they carried banners reading, "No to the troika s theft."</p><p> </p><p> Troika refers to a commission led by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, that have organised the financial rescues of Greece, Ireland and Portugal.</p><p> </p><p>Portugal s parliament approved last month a tough 2012 budget which suspends holiday and year-end bonuses for pensioners and civil servants and raises many taxes further.</p><p> </p><p>The protesters say they don t accept the changes.</p><p> </p><p>Austerity measures under Portugal s 78-billion-euro bailout agreed with the European Union and the IMF in May are expected to lead to the deepest recession since 1974.</p><p> </p><p>The government forecasts the economy will contract 1.6 percent this year and three percent in 2012.</p><p> </p><p>Portugal is the third country in the euro zone to seek a bailout after Greece and Ireland.</p><p> </p><p>Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, who came to power in June, has said the priority is to beat the debt crisis.</p><p> </p><p>To do so, Portugal is attempting to cut its budget deficit this year to 5.9 percent of gross domestic product from nearly 10 percent in 2010.<br /> </p> |
| Bangladesh PM opens Bat Expo 2011 in Dhaka Posted: <p> </p><p>Prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina opened the 22nd Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition (Bat Expo, 2011), the country s largest apparel show, in capital Dhaka at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.</p><p> </p><p>Amidst the global economic crises that has hit Bangladesh s textiles industry, which accounts for a major share of the country s exports, Hasina inaugurated the event in order to draw attention of the foreign buyers.</p><p> </p><p>"I have come here in the textile exhibition. I am wholeheartedly grateful to everyone who all is present here," said Hasina.</p><p> </p><p>A total of 146 stalls including of local and foreign garment accessories, garment fabrics, garment technology and warehouse have been set up at the three-day expo.</p><p> </p><p>The expo was seen as a reunion for both local manufacturers and foreign buyers, which would help in expanding the global market for Bangladesh s readymade garments.</p><p> </p><p>Reportedly, opposition leader Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), will conclude the ceremony as chief guest on Monday (December 12).</p><p> </p><p>In the expo, three Indian companies, ten Thai, two Chinese and one Pakistani participated and displayed their products.<br />Bangladesh is known as the second largest readymade apparel exporter in the world.<br /> </p> |
| FC, Civil Aviation officials take control of Shamsi airbase Posted: <p> </p><p>Security forces took control of Shamsi airbase in Balochistan after US military personnel vacated the facility in line with a demand from the government.</p><p> </p><p>The government had asked the US to vacate the airfield after NATO attack on two border posts in Mohmand Agency on November 26 in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed.</p><p> </p><p>The US had been using the airbase since late 2001 for military operations in Afghanistan and drone strikes in Pakistan s tribal belt, according to sources.</p><p> </p><p>Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had said last week that the US had been asked to vacate the airbase by December 11. <br />Troops from the Frontier Corps took control of the airbase late Saturday evening after most of the US personnel left the airfield.</p><p> </p><p>Only one US transport plane was parked at the airbase to transfer remaining personnel and equipment, sources said.</p><p> </p><p>Officials of the Civil Aviation Authority too arrived at the airbase to take full control of it after the remaining American officials leave the facility.</p><p> </p><p>The US had already shifted five drone aircraft from Shamsi airbase to Afghanistan. US personnel dismantled residential barracks which had been set up for the military personnel.</p><p> </p><p>The United Arab Emirates had leased the airbase, located about 300 km from the Balochistan capital of Quetta, in 1992 for use by members of the country s royal family who travel to Pakistan every year for hunting expeditions.</p><p> </p><p>The UAE gave the US access to the airbase after the 9/11 terror attacks, according to Westerna media reports.</p><p> </p><p>Shamsi airbase was originally built to operate small aircraft and the US extended the runway so that larger military aircraft could be based there.</p><p> </p><p>Reports by American media have said that Shamsi was used by CIA-operated drones that carried out attacks on militants in tribal regions.<br /> </p> |
| Osamas widow starts hunger-strike for release Posted: <p> </p><p>One of the three widows of Osama bin Laden has reportedly started hunger-strike on Saturday, claiming that her detention in Pakistan is unlawful, British media reported.</p><p> </p><p>According to details; Osama bin Laden’s Yemeni wife Amal Ahmad has announced her hunger-strike till her freedom from detention. Her hunger strike call came hours after Pakistan announced that the other two wives of Bin Laden will travel back to their native country Saudi Arabia within one week; but Amal would not be traveled to her native country Yemen because of the refusal of Yemeni authorities to accept her.</p><p> </p><p>Amal’s brother Ahmed Zakriya has also confirmed the reports and told that Amal has started her hunger-strike and will continue until she will also be freed from detention.</p><p> </p><p>All three of Bin Laden’s wives held in Pakistan after the raid in May that killed their husband and since then they were under the detention of Pakistan’s security agencies. With an official Pakistani inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the raid now complete, the Saudi wives - Khairiah Sabar and Siham Sabar - were free to go to Saudi Araboa as the Kindom has already restored their citizenship which was canceled in 1994 along with their husband Osama bin Laden.<br /> </p> |
| Man United beats Wolves 4-1 in Premier League Posted: <p> </p><p>Wayne Rooney ended his goal drought by scoring twice as Manchester United responded to its midweek Champions League exit with a 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>Rooney hadn t scored in eight Premier League matches since Oct. 1 but his double and two goals from Nani took United to within two points of leader Manchester City, which plays at Chelsea on Monday.</p><p> </p><p>United failed to make it through the Champions League group stage for only the third time after being beaten by FC Basle on Wednesday.</p><p> </p><p>Nani gave the hosts an early lead, which was doubled by Rooney in the 27th minute before Steven Fletcher pulled one back for Wolves just after halftime. But Nani then added a third and Rooney fired in a fourth.</p><p> </p><p>Ferguson had spoken of his certainty that his players would respond to their disappointment, and they certainly looked in the mood from the very start against Wolves.</p><p> </p><p>Fletcher, however, was actually the first to threaten by hitting a low shot that flew narrowly wide after a quick break in the opening minute. | Arab Games open in Qatar amid Mideast unrest Posted: <p> </p><p>With fireworks and processions of flag-waving athletes, nations from around the Middle East and North Africa came together Friday to open the Arab Games, an event that has added symbolic power after a year of enormous political upheaval in the Arab world.</p><p> </p><p>The wealthy Gulf nation of Qatar is hosting this year s games, giving it a chance to showcase its sports infrastructure ahead of 2022 s football World Cup, which will be staged here.</p><p> </p><p>Organizers also hope the Dec. 9-23 event will inspire a sense of unity amid the uprisings that have toppled autocratic leaders in the region and carved deeper divisions between some nations. Syria was notably absent after its government chose to boycott the games to protest Arab League sanctions over the regime s bloody crackdown on protesters.</p><p> </p><p>The lavish opening ceremony included dance performances, poetry recitals and other artistic shows meant to convey the "message of peace and unity," said David Atkins, executive producer and artistic director of the opening ceremony.</p><p> </p><p>About 3,000 athletes from 21 countries will compete in 33 events in the 12th edition of the games.</p><p> </p><p>The Arab Games, the regions biggest sporting event, are connected to the 22-member Arab League. The event is the creation of Abdulrahman Hassan Azzam, the first general-secretary of the Arab League. The games were first held in the Egyptian city of Alexandria in 1953.</p><p> </p><p>It is the first Gulf nation to host the Arab Games.
