India beat Afghanistan 4-0 to defend SAFF title

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>India scored four goals in the last 20 minutes to beat 10-man Afghanistan 4-0 and defend its South Asian Football Federation title on Sunday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Afghanistan held out at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium until the 71st minute when India was awarded a contentious penalty kick. Goalkeeper Hameedullah Yousefzari was so angry with the decision, he pushed the referee and earned himself a red card.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Striker Sunil Chhetri converted the spot kick to open the floodgates before Clifford Miranda (79th) and Jeje Lalpeklua (80th) scored in quick succession to make it 3-0.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Sushil Singh sealed the win in injury time against a hapless Afghanistan team playing its first SAF final after a shock 1-0 win over Nepal in the semifinals.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Russia probes vote after mass protests

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday ordered a probe into reports of vote-fixing after the ruling party&nbsp;s disputed victory sparked the largest protest rallies since the 1990s.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>However, he flatly rejected the idea of staging fresh elections.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Medvedev said he had told election officials to take a closer look at reports of rampant ballot-stuffing and other allegations that officials had fixed the vote count in an election the previous weekend.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;I disagree with the slogans and declarations made at the meetings,&quot; Medvedev wrote in his Facebook account, referring to the protests Saturday across Russia that alleged widespread fraud and demanded fresh polls.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Nevertheless, I have issued instructions to check all polling station reports about (a failure) to follow election laws,&quot; Medvedev wrote.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Saturday&nbsp;s demonstrations near the Kremlin saw more than 50,000 people deride the outcome of December 4 elections, which were widely seen as a litmus test for Vladimir Putin&nbsp;s planned return to the presidency next year.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The protests were the largest to hit the Russian capital since the tumultuous 1990s and levelled some of the most intense political pressure at Putin since he first rose to the presidency in 2000.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The former KGB agent now serves as prime minister after having made Medvedev his hand-picked presidential successor in 2008.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But despite the change of post, for many observers he has remained the country&nbsp;s de facto leader.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Now Putin intends to return to the Kremlin for up to 12 more years in a March election that he has appeared destined to win.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But scenes similar to those witnessed Saturday in Moscow were replayed on a smaller scale across the industrial hubs of Siberia and the Urals -- a sign that Putin&nbsp;s path back may be more complicated than it first appeared.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Putin stayed out of the limelight at the weekend while his spokesman issued a carefully worded statement that sounded a conciliatory note.<br />&nbsp;</p>

Senate meets today

The opposition will likely raise the issue of the memogate during today&rsquo;s session. One shot dead in Karachi

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, two youth, Babar and Faisal, parked their car at Perfume Chowk in Faisal Road Police Station jurisdiction to get some food. They were fired upon by some unidentified motorcyclists, killing Faisal on the spot while Babar received critical injuries.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police have shifted the injured to a private hospital and moved the dead body of Faisal to Jinnah Hospital for autopsy. Meanwhile, a tortured dead body was recovered from Mirza Adam Khan Road in Lyari.<br />&nbsp;</p>


No guarantee of Nov 26 like mishap not happen again: Allen

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The International Security Assistance Force denied allegations that the recent NATO attack on two Pakistani military posts in Mohmand Agency on Afghanistan border was deliberate.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Gen Allen and Nato&rsquo;s Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan Sir Simon Gass were in Dubai and spoke to the media about the encouraging trends in the security, political and development spheres in Afghanistan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Gen Allen also spoke about the strategic coordination and cooperation between the ISAF and Pakistan and highlighted the importance of having a sustained long-term relationship that benefits not only the ISAF but more importantly Pakistan and Afghanistan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Asked if there were any guarantees of such a mishap not happening again, Gen Allen said: &ldquo;You simply can&rsquo;t guarantee anything in war. The conditions are difficult at the border, let the investigation play out, we will look carefully. If we find fault on our part, we will resolve that &hellip; we will look at every aspect of the circumstances to make sure it does not happen again.&rdquo;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>However, Gen Allan&rsquo;s words of counsel in the aftermath of the incident and in context with the deterioration of Pakistan&rsquo;s relations with the US and Nato were to exercise caution.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;I simply call on all sides that the words we speak and the deeds we undertake do not go so far that we cannot achieve equilibrium in the end, that&rsquo;s all we should seek to achieve in the end, a relationship of equilibrium in the long run.&rdquo;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;My appeal to Pakistan is that there is a virulent insurgency and this is poised to attack Pakistan, Afghanistan and the members of ISAF,&rdquo; he said.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Cylinder blast destroyed market in DG Khan

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, a cylinder exploded in a market of Sabzi Mandi in Dera Ghazi Khan on Sunday. Fire broke out after the blast which engulfed the whole market and destroyed millions of rupees material present in the shops. No casualty was reported in the incident as market was closed due to holiday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Six vehicles of Rescue 1122 took part in the rescue operation and brought the fire under control after an hectic effort.<br />&nbsp;</p>

Afghan war criminal arrested in Germany

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>A former general in the Afghan secret service, allegedly responsible for 30,000 murders, was living in Munich disguised as a newspaper seller for the past several years. Police are now investigating.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>State prosecuter Thomas Steinkraus-Koch confirmed to media that the 60-year-old from Kabul is being investigated for murder.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, the suspect was a department chief in the Afghan secret service before and after the Soviet Union&nbsp;s invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He worked for the Soviet-backed regime of President Mohammad Najibullah and was responsible for investigations of political crimes and director of Afghanistan&nbsp;s prisons and interrogation and torture centres.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He is said to have ordered a mass-shooting of prisoners in the Pul-e-Charkhi prison in 1988, as a reprisal when inmates cheered the news that Soviet forces were withdrawing.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>There are said to be more than 250 witness testimonies of the massacre, where inmates were shot in groups of 60 and tipped into mass graves. A communist-era mass grave was discovered at the prison in 2006, which is believed to contain 2,000 corpses.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The man has reportedly been living undercover in Germany for so long that he now has German nationality.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Two other German state prosecutors, in Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia, are currently investigating five other ex-officers of the Afghan secret service thought to be living in Germany.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Multan: Minor killed in road accident

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, the boy was killed after being hit by a car near Chungi No 8. The heirs of the boys staged a protest after the accident and blocked the road by placing the dead body in the middle of the road.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The protesters blocked the road by burning tyres. They said that police have been protecting the real culprit and started inquiry against the wrong person.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The protesters dispersed peacefully after assurance from the district administration that the inquiry into to the incident will be conducted on merit.<br />&nbsp;</p>


DG Khan: Students stage protest against local PML-N leaders

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The students of Dera Ghazi Khan Degree College chanted slogans against the local Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership and the college administration in protest against not letting them to meet Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif during his visit to the college.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The students were of the view that they wanted to meet the chief minister to apprise him about their problems. However, the chief minister also left the college without meeting the students.<br />&nbsp;</p>


11-year-old Pak girl sets world record in O-level

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Brilliant young girl Sitara Akbar, who is only 11 years old and a resident of Chiniot, set a world record by passing O-level English, Mathematics and Science.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>This is not the first time that the eleven-year-old girl from Chanab area of Chiniot had dazzled the world with her brilliance.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>She had passed O-level Chemistry in nine years of age, hitting a record in Pakistan. Sitara then went ahead and succeeded in setting her first world record after passing O-level Biology at the age of 10.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Sitara Akbar recently pushed the bar up for the world by hitting a new record by passing English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in O-level.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>She obtained 7 out of 9 bands in International English Language Test System (IELTS) which is a requirement to get admission for post-graduate education in many colleges abroad.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>With all her brilliant successes, Sitara is still waiting for government&rsquo;s recognition of her achievement.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Eight NATO tankers torched near Bolan

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to initial reports the NATO oil tankers came under came under unidentified militants attack near Dhadar Bypass.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Fire broke out soon after the attack which soon engulfed eight containers. A container driver was also burnt alive in the incident.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police and rescue teams reached the spot after the incident and started rescue operation. The fire could not be brought under control till filing of this report.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>This is the second attack on those NATO supply tankers, which were returned back to the port city Karachi, owing to a blockade imposed by Pakistan on Afghanistan-bound NATO supplies.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Arms from 3,400 non-commercial containers unloaded in Pakistan

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) Dr Shoaib Suddle while talking to Dunya News informed that more than 3,400 non-commercial containers, meant for Afghanistan, disappeared in Pakistan. He revealed that arms from these containers had been unloaded in Pakistan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Shoaib Suddle said that these 3,400 non-commercial containers are not included in the 29,000 containers disappeared en route to Afghanistan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The investigation team learnt that these 3,400 containers did not cross the Pakistan border when the list of 29,000 containers was sent to Peshawar and Quetta Costumes Collectorates.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to Shoaib Suddle the disappearance of 29,000 commercial containers has caused a loss of one trillion rupees to the national exchequer.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It is pertinent to mention here that Dunya News broke the story of fraud of billion of rupees in the NATO and the Afghan Transit Trade containers case.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took the suo motu notice on the news flashed on Dunya News and appointed Federal Tax Ombudsman&nbsp; Dr Shoaib Suddle to investigate the case.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Nato supply blockade to continue for several weeks: Gilani

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pakistan blocked the convoys into Afghanistan via Pakistan in protest at US air strikes two weeks ago which killed 24 of its troops at two checkpoints on the Afghan border.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Mr Gilani also refused to rule out closing Pakistan&nbsp;s airspace to the US in an interview with the BBC.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>To a question about his statement under which he said that he will resign but will not write a letter to the Swiss government on the issue of NRO, the Prime Minister said he never said this and his statement was presented in a wrong way.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>To another question that the killers of Benazir Bhutto were not punished, he said, &ldquo;I only want to tell you this, if you see that in high profile cases, it takes time. And you have seen other cases of murder in the country, about which nothing has come up yet. This matter is sub judice, in the judiciary and we should wait for results.&rdquo;<br />&nbsp;</p>
