Ship with Nato supplies berths at port

KARACHI, Jan 1: The situation at Karachi port already struggling to cope with severe congestion may worsen as a US vessel carrying military hardware, including about 350 heavy vehicles, for Nato/Isaf forces in Afghanistan sailed into the port on Saturday evening just when the sun was setting on the horizon for the last time in 2011.

Another two ships with Nato supplies, including reefer containers with refrigeration system, are due in a few days...

Landmine kills FC personnel in Dera Bugti

QUETTA, Jan 1: At least three personnel of Frontier Corps and a retired FC official were killed and three others injured when a landmine exploded in Dera Bugti district on Sunday.

Police sources said two landmines had been planted in the Aasreli area, some 10km from Sui town, and an official vehicle carrying FC personnel hit one of them...

Restrictions on aid — new year US gift to Pakistan

WASHINGTON, Jan 1: In a move dubbed by the media as "a new year gift to Pakistan", US President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill that could suspend a large chunk of the $1.1 billion military aid to the country.

The suspension is part of a massive $662 billion defence spending bill which President Obama signed on Saturday evening despite having "serious reservations" about some of its provisions...

Security forces claim killing 12 militants in Landi Kotal

LANDI KOTAL, Jan 1: Security forces claimed to have killed 12 militants, four would-be suicide bombers among them, in a daylong operation in Karamna locality of Landi Kotal on Sunday.

Security forces lost one of their men in the operation. Landi Kotal Assistant Political Agent Khalid Mumtaz Kundi told Dawn that apart from killing 12 militants, security forces took into custody three women and five children from a house where militants had taken refuge and freed three people held by them...

Asma criticises memo commission, quits as Haqqani lawyer

ISLAMABAD, Jan 1: Prominent lawyer Asma Jehangir has categorically stated that she has 'no confidence' in the judicial commission constituted by the Supreme Court to investigate the memogate scandal and refused to represent former ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani in the case.

"I quit as Haqqani's lawyer but my client will pursue his case," Ms Jehangir told Dawn on Sunday. "This is the court's order and we have to follow it but I told (Haqqani) to engage some other lawyer."..

Govt mulls strategy to handle political fallout of crises

Girl killed in Bajaur bomb blast

KHAR, Jan 1: A girl was killed and three people, two among them members of an anti-Taliban Lashkar, were wounded on Sunday when a bomb planted by suspected militants in a sewerage line in a Bajaur Agency bazaar exploded, sources said.

Identified as Hajra Bibi, the girl was inside a shop in Tarano Kalli bazaar when the remote-controlled bomb was detonated, killing her on the spot and injuring the three men...

N-sites lists swapped with India

ISLAMABAD, Jan 1: Pakistan and India on Sunday exchanged lists of their nuclear sites under an accord which prohibits both sides from attacking these locations, the foreign ministry said.

Under the 1988 agreement, the two countries are required to submit the lists of all their nuclear installations and facilities on Jan 1 every year...

Iranian guards held for killing Pakistani in border attack

QUETTA, Jan 1: Authorities in Balochistan's Washuk district detained on Sunday three Iranian border guards after they allegedly crossed the border and shot at a car, killing a Pakistani national, officials said.

The Iranians reached Mazan Sar Mashkail, 3km inside Pakistan where they opened fire on a vehicle they were chasing, the officials said...
