Cash grants in lieu of power subsidy likely

ISLAMABAD, Jan 8: The government is considering to follow the Iranian model of restricting fuel and energy subsidies under which market prices are recovered from consumers who are then compensated through a cash grant.
Under its economic reform plan, Iran recently replaced fuel and food subsidies with the cash transfer programme that was praised by most of its critics, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank whose largest shareholder, the US, maintains an aggressive posture towards it...

Zardari can be persuaded to quit, says Fazl

Gilani says Seraiki province to emerge soon

Altaf calls for Fata province

KARACHI, Jan 8: Weighing in on the ongoing debate on the need for new provinces in the country, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain on Sunday proposed that a province comprising the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) be created in addition to the Hazara and Seraiki provinces. The province should be called "Qabaelistan".
Though his party has submitted a resolution in the parliament for the creation of the Hazara and Seraiki provinces by carving out territories from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, Mr Hussain rejected any division of Sindh along the same lines...

Musharraf says he will return by 30th

Saudi support to be sought for comeback

DUBAI: Former president Pervez Musharraf plans to travel to Saudi Arabia soon to gather support for his political comeback, Saudi and Pakistani sources said on Sunday.

Lull in drone strikes has emboldened militants: NYT

NEW YORK, Jan 8: A nearly two-month lull in American drone strikes in Pakistan has helped embolden Al Qaeda and several Pakistani militant factions to regroup, increase attacks on Pakistani security forces and threaten intensified strikes against allied forces in Afghanistan, the New York Times reported on Sunday citing US and Pakistani officials.
The insurgents are increasingly taking advantage of tensions raised by an American air strike in November that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in two border outposts, plunging relations between the two countries to new depths. The Central Intelligence Agency, hoping to avoid making matters worse while Pakistan completes a wide-ranging review of its security relationship with the United States, has not conducted a drone strike since mid-November, the newspaper said...
