ISLAMABAD, Jan 9: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani once again on Monday took what appeared to be a potshot at the military when he said affidavits submitted to the Supreme Court by the Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and ISI chief Lt Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha on 'memogate' were 'unconstitutional and illegal'.

In an interview with the People's Daily Online of China, which was released by the official Associated Press of Pakistan news agency, Mr Gilani said since the COAS and ISI DG had submitted their replies to the court without seeking approval of the competent authority under the rules of business, the statements carried no legal import...

Militants hand over bodies of 10 missing soldiers

KALAYA, Jan 9: Militants in their redoubt in Upper Orakzai handed over to security personnel on Monday the bodies of 10 soldiers who had been missing since an attack on their post last month.

A spokesman for the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) told Dawn in Miramshah, North Waziristan, that the bodies had been exchanged with those of 10 militants killed in two encounters in Khyber and Orakzai tribal regions...

Haqqani refuses to drop privacy rights

US says it wants negotiated settlement of memo issue

Rabbani calls for treason case

ISLAMABAD, Jan 9: Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, chairman of Parliamentary Committee on National Security, called upon the federal government on Monday to immediately register a treason case against former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf and try him on his return for twice subverting the Constitution.

Mr Rabbani, who had refused to take oath as a minister in March 2008 from Pervez Musharraf when the latter was the president, said the former military ruler should be tried and punished under Article 6 of the Constitution...

Nawaz defends taking memo issue to SC

ISLAMABAD, Jan 9: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif has again defended his decision of taking the memo controversy to the Supreme Court and said he did it only to expose people behind the "conspiracy against the country's sovereignty, vital interests and vital assets".

Talking to reporters outside the Islamabad High Court on Monday after attending the proceedings of a three-member judicial commission formed by the Supreme Court last month to investigate the memo issue, Mr Sharif made it clear that he had not nominated President Asif Ali Zardari, former ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani or Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz as accused in his petition. "I moved the judiciary only to unmask the faces behind the memo controversy, which is a serious and grave issue."..
