Govt-military ties on the mend?

ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: Amid a lowering of tensions between the government and the military establishment, Navy chief Admiral Muhammad Asif Sandila was decorated on Friday with Nishan-i-Imtiaz (military), one of the highest national honours, for his meritorious services.
The citation of the award conferred by President Asif Ali Zardari at a ceremony in the Presidency reads: "Nishan-i-Imtiaz (M) was being conferred upon the naval chief in recognition of his long meritorious services."..

Consumers to bail out power firms

ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: On top of the continuously increasing tariff, electricity consumers will also have to pay the cost of interest on power sector loans.
A decision to that effect was taken at a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet presided over by Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on Friday. It asked the ministry of water and power to issue binding policy guidelines to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to increase power tariff so that the interest could be recovered from consumers. It may be mentioned that Nepra has so far been refusing to endorse the move...

GHQ, ISI camp attacks: Fourth detainee found dead

ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: A civilian facing a court martial under the Army Act on charges of attacking the GHQ and ISI Hamza camp died mysteriously on Friday, a brother of the deceased, told Dawn on Friday.
Abdul Saboor, 29, is the fourth civilian detained in the case to have died in mysterious circumstances over the past six months -- Mohammad Aamir died on Aug 15, last year, Tahseen Ullah on Dec 17, and Said Arab on Dec 18. Their bodies were recovered from the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar...

'Pakistan to allow US trainers, not drones'

Assurance sought against removal of Kayani, Pasha

ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: The Supreme Court asked the government on Friday to submit a written assurance on a petition filed in anticipation of a perceived move to sack Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and ISI Director General Lt-Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha against the backdrop of the 'memogate' fiasco.

Karachi-Iraq ferry service soon, says Ghauri

Govt refuses favour to Indian army chief

NEW DELHI, Jan 20: The Indian government on Friday night ruled out any compromise with Army chief Gen V.K. Singh over his age issue which has been dragged to the Supreme Court.
The government also made it clear that there was no move to appoint Gen Singh chief of defence staff, a post which at present is at conceptual stage and will likely be above the chiefs of the three defence services. "No compromise formula is being worked out," a government source said...
