CEC disputes court order on voter list

ISLAMABAD, Jan 23: The Election Commission appeared to be on a path of confrontation with the Supreme Court on Monday when Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Hamid Ali Mirza said that the court's decision to put by-elections on hold till preparation of error-free electoral rolls was a violation of the Constitution.

Speaking at a consultative meeting with leaders of political parties and representatives of civil society, the CEC said it was a constitutional requirement to hold by-election within 60 days of a seat falling vacant...

SC rebuts assertion

ISLAMABAD: In a strong and prompt rebuttal to a statement by the Chief Election Commissioner expressing disagreement on its verdict to postpone the Feb 20 by-elections, the Supreme Court reasserted on Monday that any election on the basis of existing faulty electoral rolls would be illegal.

"It is clarified that election on the basis of polluted/unverified voter list cannot be termed just, fair and in accordance with law, as required under Article 218(3) of the Constitution," the Supreme Court explained in a statement issued by its Registrar Dr Faqir Hussain...

Kayani's warning brought Nato strikes to halt: military

Authorities ordered to submit compliance report: Apex court orders return of land to Swat resident

ISLAMBAD, Jan 23: The Supreme Court ordered authorities on Monday to ensure return of ancestral cultivable agriculture lands to a resident of Swat which were taken away from him, ostensibly by military authorities, after branding him a terrorist when they launched the Operation Rah-i-Rast against Taliban in the picturesque valley.
