Memo probe heading for stalemate?

ISLAMABAD, Jan 24: A high-level commission formed by the Supreme Court to investigate the memo issue appeared to have reached a dead end after its fourth hearing on Tuesday when Mansoor Ijaz, the man at the centre of the controversy, again refused to come to Pakistan saying he feared he would be assassinated.

The commission gave a final opportunity to Mr Ijaz to appear at its next hearing on Feb 9...

Gilani-Kayani meeting shows ties on the mend

Panel fails to suggest ways of resolving energy crisis

ISLAMABAD, Jan 24: With the difference between cost and sale price of electricity widening to Rs3.29 per unit (kwh), the National Assembly's Special Committee on Energy Crisis and government institutions assisting it for more than two and a half months failed on Tuesday to suggest ways of addressing the problem.

A meeting of the 17-member committee presided over by Usman Khan Taraki criticised the ministry of water and power for not providing sufficient information and for its lethargic attitude in reducing the tariff differential and said it could cause further deterioration in the country's fragile financial position...

Two troops, 7 militants killed in Kurram clash

Avalanche kills Indian soldier; six missing

SRINAGAR, Jan 24: A huge avalanche buried seven Indian soldiers on Tuesday while they were clearing snow from an army supply road near the Line of Control in Indian-held Kashmir, the army said.

Rescuers with sniffer dogs and a helicopter retrieved the body of one paramilitary officer, but another paramilitary man and five army soldiers were still missing hours after the morning avalanche, police said...
