SC seeks ISI, MI reports on Balochistan killings

ISLAMABAD, Jan 27: The Supreme Court directed the Inter-Services Intelligence and the Military Intelligence on Friday to submit reports on senseless and indiscriminate killings in Balochistan.

The order was issued by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez during the hearing of a petition about the breakdown of law and order in the province. ISLAMABAD, Jan 27: The Election Commission rescheduled on Friday by-elections on 10 seats of the national and provincial assemblies to Feb 25. The date earlier set by the commission was Feb 20.

By-elections will be held on six seats of the National Assembly and four of provincial assemblies in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Two provincial assembly seats on which elections were earlier scheduled for Feb 15 and Feb 6 will also be held on Fen 25...

US says Pakistan not sidelined in Afghan talks

ISLAMABAD, Jan 27: With Pakistan's efforts to claim carbon credits on clean energy projects from the United Nations in initial stages, the Three Gorges Dam Company of China and a consortium of Japanese and Australian companies have become embroiled in a dispute over consultancy services to secure international awards for 1,100MW Kohala Hydropower Project (KHP) in Azad Kashmir.

If unresolved, the dispute could cause a major setback to Pakistan's efforts to earn international recognition and clean energy credit benefits following a government decision to build the $2.5 billion project through CWE of China, a subsidiary of the Three Gorges Dam Company...

Disapproval of US leaders soared to 85pc in Pakistan

WASHINGTON, Jan 27 A Gallup report, which reviews all surveys carried out by the prime opinion survey group of the US, of Pakistani public opinion in 2011, notes that the disapproval of US leadership in Pakistan soared to an all-time high of 85 per cent last year, dashing "hopes for achieving some normalcy between the nations". But data collected later revived "some hopes", because a sizable number of Pakistanis, 43 per cent, believe it is very important for Western and Muslim societies to get along.

Swat family got back seized land, SC told

ISLAMABAD, Jan 27: A petition filed by a man from Swat whose family was displaced by army operation and whose farmland was taken over by the authorities was disposed of by the Supreme Court on Friday after the judges made sure that the legal heirs of the petitioner had taken possession of the property.

"For the reason that possession of the property has been taken over by the petitioners — a fact confirmed by petitioner's counsel Sanaullah Zahid and the Additional Advocate General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Syed Arshad H, Shah, no further action is called for," a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry observed...
