| Mexico: Prison fight kills 31 inmates Posted: <p> </p><p>At least 31 people were killed and 13 wounded Wednesday in a battle among inmates that broke out in a prison in the northern Mexican border state of Tamaulipas, the state government said.</p><p> </p><p>The fighting broke out in the Santa Amalia prison in the city of Altamira, a site designed to hold 2,000 inmates but which has a population of more than 3,000.</p><p> </p><p>Authorities regained control after police moved in, the statement read, adding that 13 inmates involved in the fight were detained.</p><p>Federal police forces and soldiers earlier surrounded the prison, a federal source told AFP.</p><p> </p><p>The prison is located in an area where the rival Gulf and Zetas gangs have a strong presence, and many of the inmates are doing time on drug-related charges.</p><p> </p><p>Deadly riots and prison fights are common in Mexico s overcrowded prisons.</p><p> </p><p>Twenty inmates were killed and 12 wounded in a mid-October prison fight in a jail in the border town of Matamoros, just across from Brownsville, in the US state of Texas.</p><p> </p> |
| Terrorism threat: Police on high alert in Karachi Posted: <p> </p><p>The security agencies have informed Karachi police and IG Sindh in writing that some militants have been sent to Karachi from North Waziristan to carry out terrorism activity in the city.</p><p> </p><p>The militants belong to group of Tehrik-e-Talibal commander Mast Gul alias Habib Ullah.</p><p> </p><p>On the instructions of IG Sindh, hotels in some parts of Karachi including Maripur, Kharadar and old City areas were shut down. Al the CID, ISU and other agencies have been put on high alert to meet any untoward incident.<br /> </p> |

| Kohli fined over obscene gesture to crowd Posted: <p> </p><p>India s Virat Kohli has been fined 50 percent of his match fee for making an obscene gesture to fans on day two of the second test against Australia.</p><p> </p><p>Kohli reacted to jeers and taunts from a section of the Sydney Cricket Ground crowd by raising a middle finger during a long day in the field for India as the Australian batsmen added 366 runs for the loss of just one wicket.</p><p> </p><p>In a hearing before play Thursdasy, Kohli admitted making the gesture and match referee Ranjan Madugalle found him guilty of a level two offence of the International Cricket Council s code of conduct.</p><p> </p><p>Indian team media manager G.S. Walia said Kohli had been informed of the charge on Thursday morning and pleaded guilty to making the gesture.</p><p> </p><p>"The matter has been sorted out ... the player felt guilty and sorry and the matter has been closed," Walia told reporters.</p><p> </p><p>"When he went to the match referee, he said sorry and that out of emotions I must have done it."</p><p> </p><p>Walia refused to discuss allegations by Kohli he was abused by sections of the SCG crowd, prompting the gesture.</p><p> </p><p>He insisted the matter was closed making it unlikely the Indians will lodge a complaint with the SCG Trust over any alleged misbehaviour by the crowd.</p><p> </p><p>Last evening, Kohli commented on his Twitter account: "i agree cricketers dont have to retaliate. what when the crowd says the worst things about your mother and sister. the worst ive heard".</p><p> </p><p>He found an ally in England batsman and Bangalore Royal Challengers teammate Kevin Pietersen who replied: "ha ha ha ha ha Welcome to Australia buddy"</p><p> </p><p>Pietersen then tweeted: "never heard crap like that. EVER" and "that s the way it is mate.. Beat them & they start abusing their own"</p><p> </p><p>This morning Kohli tweeted: "New day new beginning :)".</p><p> </p><p>In the previous test between the two countries at the SCG in 2008, Indian spinner Harbhajhan Singh was fined for abusing Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds.<br /> </p> |
| Landslide kills 25 in southern Philippines Posted: <p> </p><p>Philippine officials say a landslide in the southern Mindanao region has killed at least 25 people and that more than 100 others remain buried in the rubble.</p><p> </p><p>Compostela Valley provincial Gov. Arturo Uy says the landslide hit a small-scale mining area in Pantukan township before dawn Thursday.</p><p> </p><p>The disaster occurred in a region where devastating flash floods triggered by a tropical storm killed more than 1,250 people last month.</p><p> </p><p>Army Lt. Col. Camilo Ligayo says about 120 soldiers were heading to the area to help dig for survivors and bodies.</p><p> </p><p>Uy says miners and their families had been warned of the high risks. Some residents in the area were forced to evacuate after a landslide killed about 20 people last April near the site of Thursday s slide.<br /> </p> |
| Records tumble for Clarke, Hussey gets ton Posted: <p> </p><p>Michael Clarke set new records and Michael Hussey claimed his 16th Test century as Australia piled on the misery against India in the second Test in Sydney on Thursday.</p><p> </p><p>Clarke surpassed V.V.S. Laxman s 281 for the highest individual score in Australia-India Tests and also overtook the great Don Bradman s 270 as the best by an Australian captain in a home Test, a record that had stood since 1936.</p><p> </p><p>The Australian skipper received a standing ovation when he eclipsed the 109-year highest score at the SCG, fittingly in its 100th Test match, of 287, registered by Englishman Reg Foster.</p><p> </p><p>At lunch, Australia had swelled their lead to 392 runs at 583 for four with Clarke unbeaten on 293 and Hussey not out 111.</p><p> </p><p>Clarke had batted for 558 minutes and faced 424 balls with 35 fours and one six.</p><p> </p><p>India s bowlers were powerless to stem the tide and face a mammoth task to keep the four-Test series alive after going down by 122 runs in the opening Melbourne Test.</p><p> </p><p>The Indians have never won a series in Australia.</p><p> </p><p>Hussey claimed his 16th century in his 68th Test, following his fighting 89 in Melbourne.</p><p> </p><p>He scampered through for a single of Virender Sehwag for his hundred 20 minutes before lunch.<br /> </p> |
| Mansoor Ijaz ready to appear before commission Posted: <p> </p><p>The central figure in memogate scandal, the US businessman Mansoor Ijaz has agreed to come to Pakistan and appear before the memogate commission.</p><p> </p><p>In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mansoor Ijaz said that he has acquired the legal services of Supreme Court advocate Mohammad Akram Sheikh in memo case.</p><p> </p><p>Mansoor said that Mohammad Akram Sheikh will also handle technical aspects and matters specific to Pakistan’s Constitution, the Supreme Court’s orders, local laws and regulations and media issues as they arise in preparation for his personal appearance in front of the memogate commission.<br /> </p> |
| Pagara to go to London for medical treatment Posted: <p> </p><p>Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) chief Peer Pagara is currently under treatment at a private hospital in Karachi and doctors have allowed him to travel to London for further treatment.</p><p> </p><p>According to reports, a large number of relatives and followers of Peer Pagara met him on Wednesday.</p><p> </p><p>Meanwhile, an air ambulance has reached Karachi from Dubai to take ailing PML-F chief to London. According to Civil Aviation Authorities, the air ambulance will fly to London on 10:00am today.<br /> </p> |
| 16 dead in China as bus slides off bridge Posted: <p> </p><p>At least 16 people were killed after an overloaded bus veered off an icy highway bridge in China s southwestern Guizhou province on Wednesday, state media reported.</p><p> </p><p>The 50-seat tourist bus packed with 56 people fell off the bridge and plunged into a valley on Wednesday afternoon, the official Xinhua news agency said.</p><p> </p><p>The injured were rushed to a local hospital and an investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched.</p><p> </p><p>The accident happened while the bus was travelling on an icy patch of the Lanzhou-Haikou expressway, it said.</p><p> </p><p>The fatal crash was the latest on China s notoriously dangerous roads, where drivers often flout traffic safety laws.</p><p> </p><p>In December, 15 primary school children died when the bus they were travelling in rolled into a river. That incident followed the deaths of 19 children in the previous month in an overcrowded, nine-seater bus.</p><p> </p><p>Almost 70,000 people died in road accidents in China in 2010 -- around 190 fatalities a day -- according to police statistics.<br />China overtook the United States in 2009 to become the world s largest auto market.<br /> </p> |
| Nadal, Federer reach quarterfinals at Qatar Open Posted: <p> </p><p>Nadal routed German qualifier Denis Gremelmayr 6-2, 6-2 while Federer overwhelmed Slovenia qualifier Grega Zemlja 6-2, 6-3. Both men kept up their impressive records against lower-ranked opponents: The second-ranked Nadal extended his streak of beating players outside the top 100 to 45 while the third-ranked Federer made it 64 wins against players ranked outside the top 20.</p><p> </p><p>Federer also won his 19th match in a row dating to his US Open semifinal loss to No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic.</p><p> </p><p>Federer and Nadal were joined by the sixth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who saved two set points in the first set before beating Flavio Cipolla of Italy 7-6 (8), 6-3.</p><p> </p><p>Also, sixth-seeded Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia withdrew from the tournament with a right ankle injury, becoming the first seeded player not to advance.</p><p> </p><p>Nadal, who last month complained he had too little time to prepare for the season, has come out strong in Doha. | Peterhansel grabs Dakar Rally lead Posted: <p> </p><p>France s Dakar Rally legend Stephane Peterhansel took the overall lead in the car section here on Wednesday after winning the fourth stage, a 326km special from San Juan to here.</p><p> </p><p>The 46-year-old Mini driver - a six-time Dakar motorcycling champion and three time car winner - had endured a miserable day on Tuesday when he had suffered two punctures but on Wednesday it was the turn of Qatar s defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah to have a nightmare.</p><p> </p><p>The 31-year-old s Hummer broke down after 288km of the stage and only got going again after a 15 minute stop.</p><p> </p><p>While he fumed Peterhansel came in 5min 19sec ahead of Argentinian driver Orlando Terranova while the latter s fellow Toyota driver experienced South African Giniel De Villiers was third 6min 42sec adrift.</p><p> </p><p>Defending motorcycling champion Marc Coma had earlier won their stage, rebounding from a poor day on Tuesday when he had lost the overall lead.</p><p> </p><p>The 35-year-old KTM rider came in 2min 02sec ahead of main rival and team-mate Cyril Despres of France, who retained the overall lead with an advantage of 8min 10sec over the Spaniard.</p><p> </p><p>Dutchman Frans Verhoeven, riding for Sherco, was third, over eight minutes off the pace, after finishing second in Tuesday s stage.</p><p> </p><p>Coma had led three-time motorcycling champion Despres by over two minutes, but fell 10 minutes behind him on Tuesday after he took the wrong route.<br /> </p> |
| England series not only about spinners: Mohsin Posted: <p> </p><p>Pakistan coach Mohsin Khan said Wednesday that the highly anticipated series against England was about far more than just the spinners as his young side eyes a strong start to the year.</p><p> </p><p>Much has been made of the dusty wickets in the United Arab Emirates, where Pakistan play their "home" games, with many pundits saying both teams spinners will be decisive.</p><p> </p><p>"I don t see it as a duel between the spinners," Khan told reporters on the opening day of a week-long training camp in Lahore. "Both teams are doing well and I see it as a competitive fight in all the departments."</p><p> </p><p>Pakistan, unbeaten since September, take on the world s top-rated Test side in the first of three Tests in Dubai from January 17.</p><p> </p><p>Khan, retained as coach after Pakistan Cricket Board s search for a permanent candidate to replace Waqar Younis goes on, added: "I think both the teams have balance in spin and pace.</p><p> </p><p>"Batting from both the sides will be under pressure and Pakistani batters will have to do 100 percent to combat strong England bowling."</p><p> </p><p>Former opening batsman Khan added: "There is no doubt they have a better balance than us. We do not have that much experience but our players have talent and fulfilled that recently."</p><p> </p><p>He singled out for praise captain Misbah-ul Haq.</p><p> </p><p>"In Misbah we have a very wise captain and he has led the way admirably," said the coach.</p><p> </p><p>Misbah took over as skipper after the tour of England in the summer of 2010 that was dominated by allegations of spot-fixing. | Bell warns England against complacency Posted: <p> </p><p>England s key middle-order batsman Ian Bell Wednesday warned his world s top Test team of any complacency against Pakistan, saying their opponents pose a big challenge.</p><p> </p><p>England rose to number one in the ICC (International Cricket Council) rankings in August last year by blanking India 4-0 at home, but faces a big test in the series shifted to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to security fears in Pakistan.</p><p> </p><p>The 29-year-old right-handed batsman said England could not let up on the progress they had made.</p><p> </p><p>"The need to avoid complacency is huge. We worked really hard to get to No.1 and it does not stop there," Bell told reporters, ahead of England s opening three-day match against ICC Combined XI starting here from Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>They play another three-day match against the Pakistan Cricket Board XI -- also in Dubai -- from January 11-13 before the first of three Tests starts here from January 17.</p><p> </p><p>Bell said England have more to achieve.</p><p> </p><p>"There are more things for us to achieve but for us we are hungry enough.</p><p> </p><p>"We have had a nice break and the guys are looking forward to playing cricket now and we enjoy playing as a team and this is a big series for us," said Bell.</p><p> </p><p>England have not played a Test since beating India and were blanked 5-0 in a one-day series in India late last year.</p><p> </p><p>Bell said Pakistan -- unbeaten in Tests and one-day matches since losing to England in a spot-fixing marred tour in 2010 -- were playing good cricket of late.</p><p> </p><p>"We watched quite a bit of Pakistan recently and they have been playing some really good cricket and so this is a massive challenge for us, something which we are all looking forward to," said Bell, a veteran of 69 Tests.</p><p> </p><p>"Any time you play Pakistan we know that they have got world class players and they are really dangerous."<br /> </p> |
| Oil soars close to 8-month highs on Iran tensions Posted: <p> </p><p>Oil prices spiked close to eight-month highs on Wednesday as traders fretted over heightened tensions between key crude producer Iran and the United States over transit through the Gulf.</p><p> </p><p>The market also found solid support in a stream of positive economic data which boosted the outlook for the global economy and energy demand.</p><p> </p><p>New York s main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in February, spiked to $103.74, a leval last touched on May 11. The contract fell back to $102.61, down 35 cents from Tuesday s closing level.</p><p> </p><p>Brent North Sea crude for February jumped to $113.97 per barrel -- which was its highest level since November 14. It later stood at $112.82, 69 cents higher than Tuesday.</p><p> </p><p>"Alongside the return of economic optimism, oil is also finding support from the continuing tensions between Iran and the United States as sabre-rattling is stepped up on both sides," said Commerzbank analyst Eugen Weinberg.</p><p> </p><p>"Last weekend, the US again tightened its sanctions against Iran, essentially banning transactions with the Iranian central bank, via which oil business with Iran mainly takes place.<br /> </p> |
