| Tendulkar's dream of 100th ton shattered Posted: <p> </p><p>He was caught by Mike Hussey off spinner Michael Clarke to again leave him stranded on 99 international centuries.</p><p> </p><p>Tendulkar has been stranded on 99 Test and one-day international centuries since scoring 111 against South Africa in the World Cup in March.</p><p> </p><p>His last Test century was 146 against South Africa in Cape Town a year ago.</p><p> </p><p>Tendulkar opened up early on the fourth day and reached his 65th Test half-century off 89 balls.</p><p> </p><p>Tendulkar and Laxman have featured in some huge partnerships for India, headed by a record 353-run stand for the fourth wicket at the SCG in 2004 and including 214 against the West Indies in Kolkota in 2002.<br /> </p> |
| Qatar says Arab monitors in Syria made mistakes Posted: <p> </p><p>Qatar s prime minister said Wednesday the Arab League observer mission in Syria has made "some mistakes" and he was turning to the United Nations for help.</p><p> </p><p>Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad bin Jassem Al Thani discussed the monthlong mission with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York amid mounting criticism that the observers are simply giving the Syrian regime cover for its ongoing crackdown on a nearly 10-month-old uprising.</p><p> </p><p>"We are coming here for technical help and to see the experience the U.N. has, because this is the first time the Arab League is involved in sending monitors, and there are some mistakes," he said, according to Kuwait s state news agency.</p><p> </p><p>Asked what kind of mistakes, he replied: "This is the first experience for us. I said we have to evaluate what sorts of mistakes we have (made). There is no doubt for me. I can see there are mistakes, but we went there not to stop the killing, but to monitor."</p><p> </p><p>The Arab Gulf nation of Qatar has been at the forefront of criticism of Syria and has pushed for Arab League sanctions against Damascus.</p><p> </p><p>About 100 Arab League observers are in Syria to assess whether President Bashar Assad s regime is abiding by an Arab peace plan that requires the government to remove security forces and heavy weapons from cities, start talks with opposition leaders and free political prisoners. The League claims it has won some concessions from Syria, including the pullout of heavy military weaponry from cities and the release of thousands of prisoners.<br /> </p> |
| Chile wildfires kill 6 firefighters, 1 missing Posted: <p> </p><p>Shifting winds caused flames to sweep over a group of firefighters battling wildfires in Chile on Thursday, killing six of them, badly burning two and leaving another missing.</p><p> </p><p>A 10th firefighter listed as missing after his brigade was trapped in the flames was later found unhurt, said Gov. Miguel Mellado of Cautin, a state about 450 miles (730 kilometers) south of the capital, Santiago.</p><p> </p><p>Nearly 50 wildfires have sprung up in southern Chile, destroying hundreds of houses, forcing the evacuations of thousands of people and causing millions of dollars in damage to the forestry and tourism industries that fuel the economy in the country s Patagonia region.</p><p> </p><p>The wildfires alongside the Cordillera de la Costa are being by fueled by strong winds, unusually high temperatures and dangerously dry conditions.</p><p> </p><p>A sudden shift in the high winds left the group of firefighters overwhelmed by flames.</p><p> </p><p>"The wind trapped them and the flames passed over" the firefighters, Mellado said.</p><p> </p><p>Mellado originally said five firefighters were killed, but President Sebastian Pinera raised the toll to six.</p><p> </p><p>Fires have blackened much of the Torres del Paine park, which attracts 150,000 tourists annually, most during the brief southern summer, and destroyed at least part of a mill run by Chile s leading timber company.<br /> </p> |
| US urges 'responsible' handover of Afghan prison Posted: <p> </p><p>The United States said Thursday the transfer of a US military prison to Afghan control should be handled in a "responsible" way, after Afghan President Hamid Karzai ordered that the handover take place in a month.</p><p> </p><p>"We have been working... for some time with the Afghan government on appropriate timing and pace for transfer of the detention facilities" at Bagram, US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said. </p><p> </p><p>"We need to do this in a manner that is maximally responsible. That s what we want to do. And we re going to... keep working on it," she added.</p><p> </p><p>When asked about the timeline for the transfer, Nuland replied: "It s a matter that we have to work on with the Afghan government as appropriate mechanisms are put in place for the transfer."</p><p> </p><p>She said discussions were ongoing.</p><p> </p><p>Karzai on Thursday ordered the transfer of the prison at Bagram to Afghan control within a month, citing reports of human rights violations there.</p><p> </p><p>The move comes amid signs of tensions between Karzai and his US backers over plans by Taliban insurgents to open a political office in Qatar as a precursor to possible peace talks.</p><p> </p><p>Karzai is reportedly concerned that he has been sidelined by the move -- announced this week -- and insists that any negotiations should be led by his government.</p><p> </p><p>The detention facility was built within the sprawling US military base at Bagram, north of the Afghan capital Kabul after the US-led invasion in 2001 and soon gained a reputation for extra-judicial brutality.</p><p> </p><p>"We take seriously any charges or allegations of detainee abuse," Nuland said when asked about Karzai charges of such abuses.</p><p> </p><p>"We respect the rights of detainees who are in facilities that the United States manages," Nuland said.<br /> </p> |
| Four more gunned down in Karachi Posted: <p> </p><p>At least four people were shot dead, including three workers of a political party, in different parts of Karachi in incidents of firing. One attacker was also killed.</p><p> </p><p>According to details, some unidentified persons shot dead two workers of a political party in Orangi Town. Violence erupted in the area after the killing and markets were shut down. Angry residents pelted stones on vehicles in Orangi Town Block-L. Wind screen of a police mobile of Iqbal Market Police Station was also broken.</p><p> </p><p>In Site Area, some armed persons opened fire at the residence of Saeed Ahmad, an office holder of a political party. Saeed Ahmad and Bashir Khan were critically injured in the attach and were rushed to Hospital where Saeed succumbed to his wounds. The gunman of Saeed Ahmad also returned the fire of armed attackers, killing one and injuring two others.</p><p> </p><p>The incident infuriated the residents of the area and they set ablaze a motorcycle. Meanwhile one person was shot dead in Malir Memon Goth while a woman received bullet wounds in Ayub Goth.<br /> </p> |
| Sydney Test: India reach 243-3 at lunch Posted: <p> </p><p>Sachin Tendulkar s unbeaten half-century defied Australia s attack on day four of the second Test as the hosts bid to close out the match and take a 2-0 series lead.</p><p> </p><p>India added 129 runs in the first session Friday to reach 243-3 at lunch in its second innings, still trailing Australia by 225 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.</p><p> </p><p>Tendulkar, who is attempting to be the first player to score 100 international centuries, was unbeaten on 70, with V.V.S. | Pagara admitted to London hospital Posted: <p> </p><p>Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) Pir Pagara, who flew to London on a special air ambulance for medical treatment on Thursday morning, was received at the London Airport by a large number of his followers. Pakistan High Commissioner in UK, Wajid Shamsul Hassan was also present to receive the ailing PML-F leader.</p><p> </p><p>Doctors have conducted initial test of Pir Pagara soon after his arrival at the hospital while a penal of doctors will examine him today. | WAPDA employee shot dead in Sibbi Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, some unidentified miscreants opened fire at the employees of Quetta Electric Supply Company (CESCO) when they were returning to Sibbi after completing their work at the Harnai Grid Station, killing a Line Superintendent and injuring a lineman.</p><p> </p><p>The miscreant also kidnapped SDO Din Gul and lineman Muhammad Hayat. Levies have cordoned off the area after the incident and started search for the attackers. However, severe weather and darkness have hampered the search operation. The injured lineman has been sifted to hospital in Harnai.<br /> </p> |
| Low intensity quake hits Karachi. Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, the earthquake lasted for three to four second and was of low intensity. The areas where the shocks were felt included Califton, Defence, Guzri, Mahmoodabad, Khayaban-e-Nishat, Khayaban-e-Muhafiz, Khayaban-e-Rahat, Khayaban-e-Shujaat and Khayaban-e-Bukhari.</p><p> </p><p>According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, the earthquake was of very low intensity. | Motorway closed due to fog cover Posted: <p> </p><p>According to the Motorway Police the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway has been closed from Sheikhupura to Pindi bhattian as visibility was down to zero due to dense fog.</p><p> </p><p>The Motorway police have diverted the traffic, already plying on Motorway, to GT Road to avoid any untoward incident.</p><p> </p><p>Motorway police have advised the drivers to drive at a low speed and keep the fog lights on.<br /> </p> |
| Islamabad: Minor house servant strangulated Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, 12-year-old child house servant Ali Shan was strangulated to death by the owners of the residence he was employed at.</p><p> </p><p>The police have arrested the couple accused of the killing. The incident took place in sector G-13 of the federal capital.<br />The family of the victim alleged that the boy was suffocated by the couple. A protest was also held by the victim’s family outside PIMS hospital.<br /> </p> |

| Next Israel-Palestinian talks on Monday: US Posted: <p> </p><p>The next direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians will take place in Jordan on Monday, the US State Department said.</p><p> </p><p>"The next meeting is now on Monday the 9th," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Thursday, confirming they will take place in the Jordanian capital Amman, as did a first round of talks earlier this week.</p><p> </p><p>"The good news here is we do appear to be in a process where the parties will be meeting directly, and we hope that this will continue even beyond Monday the 9th," Nuland said.</p><p> </p><p>Talks in Amman on Tuesday between Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat and Israeli envoy Yitzhak Molcho, sponsored by Jordan and the peacemaking Quartet, were the first direct discussions between the sides in more than 15 months.</p><p> </p><p>A Palestinian official had suggested the meeting, which was described as positive but produced no breakthroughs, would be followed by a second round of talks on Friday, also in Amman.</p><p> </p><p>But Israeli media reported the next meeting was not expected before next week, and Nabil Abu Rudeina, spokesman for Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, said only that a series of meetings was expected to follow Tuesday s talks.</p><p> </p><p>That meeting came in the context of efforts by the Quartet, made up of the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia, to kick-start talks which ground to a halt shortly after they began in September 2010.</p><p> </p><p>The group has called on both sides to present comprehensive proposals on borders and security before January 26, with an eye to resuming direct talks shortly afterwards.</p><p> </p><p>However, there was little optimism about Tuesday s meeting on either side, with the Palestinians eager to insist that the talks were not an official resumption of negotiations.<br /> </p> |
| Muslim veil sit-in ends at Tunisian university Posted: <p> </p><p>Habib Kazdaghli, dean at the arts department of the University of Manouba, near Tunis, said campaigners for the veil left quietly.</p><p> </p><p>"They ve left, the sit-in is over," Kazdaghli said. "Police were present but there was no violence."</p><p> </p><p>Kazdaghli did not say what broke the deadlock, but stressed the veil would remain prohibited in the classroom. The faculty is expected to reopen Friday, he added.</p><p> </p><p>Since November 28, a group of students who were for the most part not enrolled at the university had occupied the faculty to demand the right for students to wear the full veil, known as the niqab.</p><p> </p><p>The university had banned the garment over security concerns if students were concealed from head to toe.</p><p> </p><p>Many ultraconservative Muslims attended the sit-in, causing the faculty s closure on December 6. Manouba is about 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Tunis, the country s capital.</p><p> </p><p>The ultraconservative Muslims, known as Salafists, have increased in profile since last year s overthrow of strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, as part of the Arab Spring uprisings. <br /> </p> |
| Federer, Nadal edge closer to Qatar clash Posted: <p> </p><p>Roger Federer clinched his 20th successive victory while Rafael Nadal produced his best performance of the Qatar Open as the two great rivals came within one round of a showdown in the opening week of the season.</p><p> </p><p>Federer s was an up-and-down effort in a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 success against Andreas Seppi, the eighth-seeded Italian, but Nadal had to be close to his muscular, tenacious best to see off the challenge of Russian Mikhail Youzhny in Thursday s quarter-finals.</p><p> </p><p>The Grand Slam record-holder from Switzerland and the French Open champion from Spain will have their 27th encounter if they both win again, but predictions are unwise in the uncertain early days of a new tour.</p><p> </p><p>What does seem likely is that Nadal is overcoming some of the disadvantages of his limited off-season preparation -- only five days work with a differently balanced racket -- and is beginning to build for tough performances at the Australian Open.</p><p> </p><p>He served stridently and with a high first serve percentage, moved as superbly as ever, and was both consistent and aggressive in some brilliantly long drawn out baseline rallies.</p><p> </p><p>Federer started well against Seppi, but then the top 40 Italian began to rally elegantly and expertly from the baseline.</p><p> </p><p>The defending champion also played a little ambitiously even for him in the second set, going 1-5 down, and recovering to 5-5 before somehow still losing it.</p><p> </p><p>He broke serve early in the third set and held the advantage till the end, but his excellent first serving and passages of brilliance were marred by a total of 41 unforced errors.</p><p> </p><p>He will have another match with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, whom he overcame in last year s semis, before losing to the Frenchman in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, and narrowly beating him again in the final of the ATP World Tour finals in London.</p><p> </p><p>"I am looking forward to playing him again," Federer said.
