Govt takes oil prices to a new high

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31: Disregarding recommendations of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to freeze oil prices, the government on Tuesday increased petroleum prices by up to six per cent with immediate effect to generate an additional revenue of Rs3 billion.

"Ogra recommends that POL product prices effective Feb 1, 2012, may be kept unchanged by absorbing the said increase in petroleum levy, to provide relief to public at large," the authority had written to the government, arguing that receipts from petroleum products had already shown a rise of Rs9.2 billion over the July-December period last year...

Obama owns up to drone strikes

Relatives allowed to see 'missing' brothers

PESHAWAR, Jan 31: Five family members of two missing men, Abdul Basit and Syed Abdul Majid, were allowed to visit the plastic and reconstructive surgery unit of the Lady Reading Hospital and meet them for a few minutes on Tuesday.

The visit was allowed after the Supreme Court, while hearing a petition of Ms Ruhaifa, the mother of three men picked up by intelligence agencies (one of them died in custody) ordered on Monday production of all the missing people taken away for their alleged involvement in Oct 2009 attacks on the GHQ and ISI's Hamza Camp in Rawalpindi...

ECC approves sugar export to ward off glut

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31: After lifting the almost entire sugarcane stocks, the government has allowed export of 100,000 tons of sugar to improve sugar industry's cash flows and ward off a possible glut in the market that may further bring down the retail price.

'Afghan solution must not imperil Pakistan'

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Tuesday that peace in Afghanistan was critical for peace and security in Pakistan and the country would not support any political settlement of the Afghan imbroglio which could destabilise it.

LHC tribunal told to carry on with PIC death probe

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31: The Supreme Court allowed a tribunal of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday to continue its investigation into the death of over 110 cardiac patients in Lahore as a result of reaction to some drugs, but asked the Punjab government and FIA to submit reports on the tragedy.

Police groping in dark over assassination of MPA's wife, daughter

KARACHI, Jan 31: Police are groping in the dark over the killing of the wife and daughter of Balochistan MPA Sahibzada Bakhtiar Domki and their driver in the city's Gizri area on late Monday night. The deceased, Jhumar, 31, was granddaughter and Jana, 13, great-granddaughter of slain Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti.

Govt and military united on policy towards US: Sherry

WASHINGTON, Jan 31: Pakistan has one united policy towards the United States, which has the support of all government institutions, says Ambassador Sherry Rehman, she has also emphasised the need to dispel the impression that Pakistani institutions are divided over the country's relationship with Washington.

"Pakistan speaks today as one united government, and we will have one united policy towards the United States," she told a group of Pakistani journalists. "The elected government will stand firm in its resolve to protect our military when our soldiers are martyred in the line of duty, as they were on border post of Salala, and the military stands committed to defend our borders from any incursion to the last man."..
