Gilani faces contempt hearing on 13th
-----------------------------------------------------------------
By Nasir Iqbal
ISLAMABAD, Feb 2: The peaceful interlude in Islamabad did not last long. By summoning Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to appear before it on Feb 13, the Supreme Court moved a step closer on Thursday to finding him guilty of contempt of the court.
"We are satisfied that prima facie there is enough case to proceed further in the contempt case," announced Justice Nasirul Mulk, who heads a seven-judge bench, before putting off further proceedings till Feb 13 for framing the charges...

PM says he will appear before judges again
----------------------------------------------------------------
ISLAMABAD, Feb 2: Hours after being summoned by the Supreme Court for a second time to face contempt proceedings, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told the National Assembly on Thursday that he would appear before the judges again on Feb 13.
He made the announcement during a brief speech in which he assured the opposition of his government's cooperation in seeking any possible improvement in the framework for future elections, but used the occasion to also emphasise his oft-repeated theme that all state institutions must work within the limits prescribed by the country's constitution and that parliament was supreme over all others...

US plans to end combat mission by mid-2013
----------------------------------------------------------------
By Our Correspondent
WASHINGTON, Feb 2: US Defence Secretary Leon E. Panetta has said that US forces will end their combat mission in Afghanistan by mid-2013, taking on the role of advising and assisting Afghan security forces.
But in the same statement, Mr Panetta also said that President Barack Obama had made it clear that US troops would have an enduring presence in Afghanistan beyond 2014 — in counter-terrorism and "train, advise and assist" roles. No final decisions have been made about exact numbers or missions after 2014, he added...

Unanimous NA resolution calls for withdrawal of oil price hike
----------------------------------------------------------------
By Raja Asghar
ISLAMABAD, Feb 2: In what seemed as at least a temporary truce between them, the ruling coalition and the opposition joined voices in the National Assembly on Thursday in demanding that the government consider withdrawing the latest increase in domestic oil prices after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani promised to do "whatever is possible".
The demand came in a joint resolution unanimously passed by the house after opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had cited it as one of opposition's conditions for supporting a government bill seeking an amendment to the Constitution to validate over 20 post-Eighteenth Amendment by-elections...

Haqqani network may enter talks: Khar
--------------------------------------------------------------
ISLAMABAD, Feb 2: Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said on Thursday that Pakistan would be willing to push the Afghan militant groups like the Haqqani network and the Taliban to make peace if asked to do so by the Afghan government, an action seen as key to the reconciliation process.
Pakistan's role is vital because Taliban leaders are thought to be based in the country. But there are also limits to what Islamabad can accomplish since the Taliban have been difficult to control and are wary of Pakistani influence...

Shahbaz sheds some ministries
--------------------------------------------------------------
By Our Staff Reporter
LAHORE, Feb 2: Criticised by the opposition and questioned by the media for keeping many ministries and departments under himself, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has decided to share some of his responsibilities with colleagues in the cabinet.
But he has kept with himself the ministry of health which has taken a lot of flak because of the death of over 100 cardiac patients over the past 10 days. He has given the charge of various portfolios to ministers and advisers instead of expanding the cabinet, to the disappointment of many of his party's MPAs who were hoping to get a cabinet slot...
