Bench headed by CJ to hear Gilani's appeal

ISLAMABAD, Feb 8: Four days before the date he has been summoned to appear before the Supreme Court in a contempt case, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has challenged the order through an intra-court appeal which will be heard on Thursday.
The appeal says it would be ironic to send to prison a democratically elected prime minister who had released detained judges of the court even before taking oath as the chief executive...

ISLAMABAD, Feb 8: A meeting of senior military officials of Pakistan, Afghanistan and coalition forces based in Afghanistan held on Wednesday for discussing border security and coordination marked the formal resumption of military contacts with the US and Nato after months of estrangement in the aftermath of Nov 26 strikes on Pakistani border posts.
"Representatives of Isaf, ANA and Pakistan Army met at Border Coordination Centre (BCC) in Torkham today under tripartite engagement format to discuss and improve various coordination measures on Pak-Afghan border," a military official said...

Military claims severing militants' supply route

Govt report links rights violations to poverty

ISLAMABAD, Feb 8: Reporting more than 16,000 cases during 2011, the government has linked economic crisis, poverty and widening gap between the elite and common citizens to increase in number of human rights violations and said the deteriorating situation would require "strong revolutionary steps" for improvement.
"The gap between the elite, ultra rich, prosperous business class and the middle and lower middle classes along with the large majority living below the poverty line is so wide that it cannot be filled by ordinary measures. It requires very strong revolutionary steps to address the situation for a better and cordial social environment," said the ministry of human rights in a testimony to parliament...

10 suspected militants killed in drone strike

Hospital in a fix over detainees with critical injuries

PESHAWAR, Feb 8: Authorities at a public sector hospital here are perturbed over the manner in which missing persons are brought there by intelligence agencies in critical condition and with slim chances of their survival, an official at the hospital said.
The official at the Lady Reading Hospital, the biggest public sector hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said four people who were among the 11 prisoners who went missing from Rawalpindi's Adiala jail were brought to the hospital in precarious condition and doctors there had no chance to save them...

Suspect forcibly taken away: police

LAHORE, Feb 8: The police were on Wednesday left protesting against some army personnel over the custody of a suspect in a 2011 forced-marriage case.
The police said a group of army men forcibly took away the suspect from the Misri Shah police station on Wednesday evening. Not only this, the police officials claimed the soldiers briefly held hostage a sub-inspector and gave a thrashing to other staff at the police station. The sub-inspector, identified simply as Javed, had arrested Saleem Masih, working as a sweeper in an army unit, in a forced-marriage case registered in 2011...
