ISLAMABAD, Feb 12: A day before appearing in the Supreme Court, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani cleared the air about his legal status in the event of his conviction in the contempt of court case, and said he would automatically lose his job.
When asked in an interview with Al Jazeera television if he would resign for the sake of the president, the prime minister said if convicted he would automatically lose the office, so there would be no need for him to resign...

PPP, allies stand behind premier

Senate poll process begins today

ISLAMABAD, Feb 12: The process of much-talked about Senate elections begins on Monday with submission of nomination papers by candidates to the offices of the Election Commission in Islamabad and the four provincial capitals.
According to the schedule announced last month by the commission for elections on 54 seats for a six-year term (2012-2018), the nomination papers may be submitted by 4pm on Tuesday. The papers will be scrutinised on Feb 16 and 17...

'Drone strikes never allowed'

ISLAMABAD, Feb 12: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said US drone strikes targeting Al Qaeda and Taliban militants are counter-productive and his government has not given permission for such attacks.

All transport services may be opened to private sector

ISLAMABAD, Feb 12: The government is opening up the entire transportation sector and services — rail, road, air, ships, ports, airports and waterways — to the private sector under an integrated National Transport Policy (NTP) expected to be considered for approval by the federal cabinet in a forthcoming meeting.
Informed sources told Dawn on Sunday that a comprehensive document envisaging policies and framework to guide planning, implementation, operations and monitoring of the transport system was finalised at a recent meeting presided over by Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Dr Nadeem-ul-Haque and attended by secretaries and senior officers of the ministries concerned and organisations in the transportation chain...

Religious leaders oppose reopening of Nato route

KARACHI, Feb 12: Religious parties vowed on Sunday to hold a sit-in outside parliament on Feb 20 in protest against restoration of Nato supplies and warned to turn every square of the country into Tahrir Square if attempts were made to push the country to what they said US subservience.

Live peacefully in West, Osama told children: report

LONDON, Feb 12: Slain Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden urged his younger children to go live peacefully in the West and get a university education, his brother-in-law said in an interview published on Sunday.
