Moral support for Gilani, ire at US hearing in NA

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13: Hours after being indicted by the Supreme Court over a disputed contempt charge, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani seemed winning some moral support across party lines in the National Assembly on Monday before opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan jumped in to share the day's honours by pulling off a unanimous, though belated, condemnation of a US Congressional hearing on Balochistan.

The prime minister's arrival during the early part of the question hour to louder than usual desk-thumping from the ruling coalition enlivened a dull house and then lawmakers from both the opposition and treasury benches went to him to shake his hand or say a few words of possible support in the case he has to fight in the apex court for not writing mainly to Swiss judicial authorities to reopen withdrawn money-laundering charges against his party's dead and living leaders in cases instituted by their political rivals in 1990s...

Parliament has final say on ties with US: Kayani

SHAHBAZ AIRBASE (Jacobabad), Feb 13: Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said on Monday that parliament would determine the contour of Pakistan's future relationship with the US.

Delhi blast sets ablaze Israel embassy car

KESC tariff reducedby 19 paisa

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13: Tariff for electricity consumers in Karachi has been reduced by 19 paisa per unit on account of fuel price adjustment to be passed on to them in bills for March.

Four die in Balochistan attacks

QUETTA, Feb 13: Two boys and two policemen were killed and 24 people were injured when a bomb exploded in Dera Murad Jamali and some armed men opened fire on a police camp in Chattar area of Nasirabad district on Monday.

Pakistan has second lowest school enrolment: study

KARACHI, Feb 13: Pakistan stands second in global ranking of out-of-school children with 57.3 per cent children in the 3-5 age group not enrolled in any school in the rural areas and 65.5 per cent mothers being in the illiterate category.

Citing the figures at the launch of the Annual Status of Education Report (Aser), Pakistan, here on Monday, experts said the challenges on the educational front could not be overcome unless the citizens fought for quality education for their children as their fundamental right...

Balochistan hearing termed unhelpful

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13: The US Charge d'affaires was on Monday summoned to the Foreign Office for conveying the government's abhorrence at the newfound American concern for Balochistan, which was described as unhelpful for repairing the already strained bilateral relationship.

"The US charge d'affaires, Mr Richard Hoagland, was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today. He was officially conveyed the government's serious concern with regard to the hearing held by the US Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee on Oversight and Investigations in relation to Balochistan," the Foreign Office said in a statement...
