Musharraf to be brought back with Interpol help

KARACHI, Feb 21: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Tuesday informed members of the Sindh Assembly that soon former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf would be brought back to the country to face trial in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case, following issuance of red warrants by the trial court to Interpol.

He also said that former Sindh chief minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, whenever he returned to Pakistan, would be questioned about his remarks reported in a section of the press on the eve of arrival of Benazir Bhutto on Oct 18, 2007, from her exile. Dr Rahim had reportedly said that "during the day they will beat drums, but after sunset they will cry when lights will be switched off"...

SC issues notices on poll spending plea

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21: The Supreme Court on Tuesday put on notice 26 political parties, including the People's Party and the PML-N, to come up with replies by Feb 29 on a petition seeking reduction in expenditure during election campaigns.

DUBAI, Feb 21: Kevin Pietersen hit his second successive century to help a resurgent England beat Pakistan by four wickets in the fourth and final international here on Tuesday for a 4-0 whitewash. The 31-year-old right-hander held the innings together during his 153-ball career-best 130 — his ninth one-day hundred — to help England chase down a 238-run target in 49.2 overs at Dubai Stadium.

Afghan officials 'in talks with Quetta Taliban'

KANDAHAR, Feb 21: Afghan officials are holding talks with the Taliban in Pakistan, the head of a provincial peace council in the insurgency's heartland Kandahar said on Tuesday, in a possible signal that Islamabad is boosting its support for Afghan peace efforts.

Kandahar peace council's chairman Ata Mohammad Ahmadi said the officials had been meeting for "some time" with mid-level Taliban commanders in Quetta, where the leadership of the militant group is reported to be based...

Khar-Hillary meeting in London tomorrow

Request for contempt case against ISPR chief

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21: The Supreme Court was requested on Tuesday to initiate contempt proceedings against the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) for allegedly obstructing and prejudicing a court hearing about seven suspects picked up by intelligence agencies for their alleged involvement in the Oct 2009 attacks on the GHQ and ISI's Hamza Camp in Rawalpindi.

The contempt petition against ISPR DG Maj-Gen Athar Abbas was filed by Advocate Tariq Asad who is also pursuing the case of Rohaifa, mother of three civilian brothers picked up by the agencies. One of them was later found dead. Rohaifa died of heart attack on Feb 14, a day after meeting her surviving sons at the Supreme Court after a long struggle...

Twelve officials held by NAB

QUETTA, Feb 21: The National Accountability Bureau, Balochistan, has arrested 12 more officials, including the Director General of Agriculture Department, in connection with embezzlement of funds allocated for the development of Command area of Pat Feeder Canal in Nasirabad district.

Sources in the NAB said here that Rs70.5 million had been allocated in 1997 for construction of watercourses, improving irrigation system and providing other facilities to farmers of Pat Feeder Canal command area, but the amount was not spent on the project. "In the initial investigation, the NAB official unearthed embezzlement of Rs70.5 million in the project," a senior official said...

Judges' shortage in SHC decried

$440m flood appeal launched

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21: Pakistan and the United Nations launched on Tuesday a fresh appeal for $440 million to help people in Sindh and Balochistan rebuild their lives in the aftermath of 2011 floods.

The 'Floods 2011 early recovery framework' appeal is for 215 projects to be launched with the help of donors for restoration of livelihood, support for food security, basic social services, shelter, community infrastructure, health, nutrition, water and sanitation in the flood-affected areas of the two provinces. The projects are to be completed by September this year...
