-----------------------------------------------------------------
By Malik Asad
ISLAMABAD, Feb 24: Mansoor Ijaz, the central character in the memo scandal, said on Friday that ISI chief Lt-Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha, while investigating evidence related to the memorandum allegedly delivered to former US military chief Mike Mullen, had told him that army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had instructed him to inquire into the matter.

In his testimony before the judicial commission investigating the case, he said that Gen Pasha had told him during their four-hour meeting in London's Park Lane Intercontinental Hotel on Oct 22 that both he and the chief of the army staff were keen to ensure that the political government completed its tenure, but they also wanted to get to the bottom of what the memo was all about...

----------------------------------------------------------------
By Dilawar Hussain
KARACHI, Feb 24: Stocks at the Karachi share market got off to a storming start on Friday with the KSE-100 index closing 190 points higher at 12,706 points, spurred by massive individual and institutional buying.

Dealers said the market, which was now worth Rs3 trillion or $36 billion, had crossed the barrier of 12,700 points for the first time in nearly four years (45 months). Arif Habib, former chairman of KSE, attributed the bull run to several positive factors. The assurance by the former finance minister regarding the reformed Capital Gains Tax (CGT), which included a 'no questions to be asked on source of funds invested in stocks till 2014' was a major reason that provided comfort to investors...

India assails US NGOs
--------------------------------------------------------------
NEW DELHI, Feb 24: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh blamed US non-profit groups in an interview published on Friday for whipping up anti-nuclear demonstrations that have stalled two new atomic plants. Mr Singh told the American journal "Science" that "the atomic energy programme has got into difficulties because these NGOs, mostly I think based in the US, don't appreciate the need for our country to increase the energy supply."

India's fast-growing economy is heavily dependent on coal, but the government hopes to raise the proportion of power produced from nuclear sources from less than three per cent to 25 per cent by 2050.—AFP..
