EOBI plans to invest in energy schemes

ISLAMABAD, Feb 26: The Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) is planning to invest money in alternative energy schemes to enhance its revenues and help ease the energy crisis in the country.

The EOBI is planning to invest in a coal-water-slurry project which the institution expects to produce 25 megawatts of electricity in Multan. A proposal has been sent to Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) for approval...

Key ministries yet to agree on negative list for trade with India

ISLAMABAD, Feb 26: The government has promised to complete the negative list for trade with India by the end of this month but differences between two key ministries concerned on certain points are making it difficult to give it a final shape.

The commerce ministry wants only a limited number of items on the negative list and its total elimination in nine months, but the industries ministry proposes that the phasing out of the list should begin three years after its notification and it should be made ineffective in five years...

267 employees of Planning Commission set to lose job

ISLAMABAD, Feb 26: About 267 employees, including over a dozen senior officers of the Planning Commission, are likely to lose their jobs before June 30 following closure of about 20 capacity-building projects.

The commission has already notified the closure of 15 such projects before June 30, this year, while four projects funded mostly through foreign assistance will complete their designed life...

Bribery petition hearing may harm ex-servicemen more than politicians

ISLAMABAD, Feb 26: As the Supreme Court resumes on Wednesday, hearing of a petition filed in 1996 by Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan against the ISI having bribed politicians, legal minds are of the opinion that the proceedings will expose ex-servicemen more than politicians involved in the scandal.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez will hear the case, apparently because of a growing demand from certain quarters that the politicians and political groups who had received illegal money from the intelligence agency should be brought to justice...

Pakistan, UAE sign accord on transfer of prisoners
