Karachi violence claims three more lives

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, some unidentified persons shot dead a man in Hassan Colony area of Sohrab Goth. The dead was identified as Abbas Khan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police also recovered dead body of a woman in Garden East area. Police said the body was divided into pieces. Meanwhile, a 14-year-old unidentified boy was shot dead near Civil Hospital.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In Shah Latif Town, an 18-year old Shahzad was injured during firing by unidentified persons while three other people were injured in PICHS, New Karachi Industrial Area and Faqeer Colony in acts of violence.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>A shopkeeper was injured during firing incident in Empress Market area of Sadr. The shopkeepers staged a violent protest after the incident and smashed glasses of many vehicles passing through the area. The shopkeepers also blocked road near Jahangir Park by burning tyres.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Meanwhile, police have arrested 6 persons during a raid on the den of kidnappers in Northern Bypass area. Police have also arrested four extortionists on raids in Orangi Town and Civil Lines area and recovered large amount of arms.<br />&nbsp;</p>


ICC to probe fresh fixing claims: report

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The International Cricket Council (ICC) is investigating claims that Indian bookmakers are fixing the results of England county games and international fixtures, Britain&nbsp;s Sunday Times reported.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Britain&nbsp;s Sunday Times reported that it had uncovered evidence that tens of thousands of pounds (dollars) was on offer to players to throw part or all of international matches, including last year&nbsp;s World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It cited one Delhi bookmaker boasting that English county cricket was also a &quot;good new market&quot;, as it involved &quot;low-profile matches and nobody monitors them. That&nbsp;s why good money can be made there without any hassle&quot;.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The allegations come just weeks after former Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield became the first English cricketer to be jailed for corruption after admitting accepting money to fix a match against Durham in September 2009.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Last year, Pakistan players Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were also jailed in Britain for their role in an entirely separate &nbsp;spot-fixing&nbsp; scandal concerning a 2010 Test match against England.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>An ICC spokesman said it would investigate the new allegations.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We are grateful for the information you have provided and will launch an inquiry into these serious allegations,&quot; he told The Sunday Times.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Betting on cricket in the legal and illegal markets continues to grow rapidly and, with many, many millions of dollars being bet on every match, the threat of corrupters seeking to influence the game has not gone away.&quot;<br />&nbsp;</p>


Rain ends New Zealand, South Africa Test

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The first Test between New Zealand and South Africa ended in a draw Sunday as steady rain ruled out any chance of play on the final day.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The rain began overnight and the umpires called the game off soon after the scheduled lunch adjournment with no sign of a break in the weather.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The match was evenly poised at the end of the fourth day with New Zealand on 137 for two, requiring a further 264 runs for victory, while South Africa needed to take another eight wickets.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>South Africa had dominated play for most of the first four days and when they declared their second innings at 435-5, they set New Zealand a target of 401 to win.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The second Test starts in Hamilton on Thursday.<br />&nbsp;</p>


3 killed in road accident in Kohat

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, a Para Chinar-boung truck fell on a pick-up on Hangu Road in Katch Pakka area near kohat, killing three people on the spot and injuring three others.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The dead were identified as Imran, Amir and and unidentified woman. The residents of the area launched rescued operation on self-help basis and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital.</p>


Govt to lower electricity prices in 2013: Khursheed Shah

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Addressing the Inauguration ceremony of Sui gas in Peepalwala Pul near Rahim Yar Khan, the Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khursheed Shah said that government is planning to lower electricity prices in 2013.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He said that price of electricity will be brought down to Rs 6 per unit from the present price of Rs 10 per unit.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Bomb explosion in Colombia injures 7

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>At least five soldiers and two civilians were injured by a home-made bomb on Saturday&nbsp; after suspected FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) rebels placed the explosive device outside an airport in the former demilitarised zone of San Vicente del Caguan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>As Colombian authorities close in on guerilla territory, General Jaime Lasprilla believes the attack was carried out for recent military incursions in the region.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Its been a terrorist act perpetrated by the FARC&nbsp;s 63rd front as a retaliation for the operation that we are conducting in the area,&quot; he said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to local sources, the bomb went off at 8am when military personnel at the site were performing security and surveillance operations.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>No deaths were reported and victims are reported to be in a stable condition in a nearby hospital.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Five military personnel members have been injured in the attack. Their injuries are not life threatening and they are being treated at the moment,&quot; added Lasprilla.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In recent years strikes against the FARC have severely weakened the rebels&nbsp; ranks and capabilities. However, the recent surge in violence demonstrates that the FARC remain a force, staging attacks on economic infrastructure, kidnapping civilians and law enforcement.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Colombia&nbsp;s nearly five-decade-old war has killed tens of thousands of people, seen hundreds kidnapped and displaced 3.5 million more.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Arab League condemns Gaza 'massacre'

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Arab League on Saturday condemned Israeli air strikes on Gaza that killed 15 Palestinians calling it a &quot;massacre&quot; and urging an international tough stance against the Jewish state.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo slammed Israel&nbsp;s &quot;dangerous escalation on the blockaded Gaza Strip which led to 15 deaths, left dozens injured and destroyed property and houses.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The 22-member Arab body called on the international community to &quot;take a firm stance to dissuade Israel from its continued massacres and violations of the rights of the Palestinian people.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It also said &quot;Israel bears the responsibilty, as an occupying force, to end the illegitimate blockade on Gaza and to protect the Palestinian people.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Medics said Saturday that Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip killed 15 Palestinians including a militant group chief.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The raids came as Palestinian militants fired more than 90 rockets and mortar rounds into southern Israel since Friday morning, the Israeli army said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It was the deadliest 24-hour period on the Gaza-Israel border since a devastating Israeli assault in December 2008-January 2009 aimed at halting Palestinian rocket attacks.<br />&nbsp;</p>


62 killed in Syria on first day of Annan visit

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>At least 62 persons, mostly soldiers and rebels, were killed in violence across Syria on Saturday, the first of a two-day visit by international peace envoy Kofi Annan, a monitor said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Among them were 21 army deserters, 19 soldiers and 22 civilians, who were killed in fighting in the northwestern province of Idlib, whose capital city was stormed by ground troops on Saturday evening, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Another seven civilians died in Damascus and Homs.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Bus station blasts in Kenya's capital kill 4

Rallying: Loeb leads Citroen 1-2 in Mexico

Cycling: De Gendt wins 7th stage of Paris-Nice

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Belgium&nbsp;s Thomas De Gendt has won the seventh stage of the Paris-Nice race in a breakaway and Bradley Wiggins of Britain kept the overall lead.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Saturday&nbsp;s 219.5-kilometer (136.4-mile) trek from Sisteron to Nice featured four climbs and was the hardest leg of the week-long race.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The 25-year-old Belgian jumped out early from the pack with Rein Taaramae but then outclassed the Estonian on the day&nbsp;s hardest climb the category-one Vence pass.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>De Gendt beat Taaramae by 6 minutes, 18 seconds, while Wiggins finished in the main pack, 9:24 back.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The day&nbsp;s big loser was 38-year-old American Levi Leipheimer. Ashton Eaton sets world record in heptathlon

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Ashton Eaton set his third heptathlon world record in as many years to win gold Saturday at the world indoor championships, and Justin Gatlin highlighted an all-American day by taking the 60-meter dash.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Eaton dominated the two-day competition from start to finish and capped it with an overwhelming 1,000 meters in the concluding event to break the record he set last year with a total of 6,645 points. The old mark was 6,568 points.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Gatlin struck his first gold since serving a four-year doping suspension by coming back on Nesta Carter to win the 60 in 6.46 seconds, 08 seconds better than the Jamaican. Defending champion Dwain Chambers of Britain took bronze.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Gilani to consult lawyer on SC directives in NRO case

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Talking to reporters at Prime Minister&rsquo;s House, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said he had to sign many files daily and take decisions in the national interest.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>About the Supreme Court&rsquo;s directive on NRO implementation case, the prime minister said he would consult his lawyer before taking any decision. He said he had full respect and honour for the judiciary and would take final decision about the future course of action regarding the case after consulting his lawyer.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>On the Balochistan issue, the prime minister said he had directed federal law enforcing agencies to extend full cooperation to the provincial government.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;I did talk to law enforcing agencies, I did talk to the chief of army staff (Gen Ashfaq Kayani), I did talk to the director general of ISI (Lt Gen Shuja Pasha) and other officials to ensure that they will extend cooperation to the provincial government to improve law and order situation&rdquo; in Balochistan, Gilani said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He said the Balochistan government was satisfied with other issues, including royalty and share from the National Finance Commission Award but it was still facing problems.</p><p>To a question about the Mehran Bank case, the prime minister said, &ldquo;It should have been decided earlier.&rdquo;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Gilani said that the passage of amendments to restore 1973 Constitution in its original form without having simple majority was the biggest achievement of his government.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He expressed hope that the government would also achieve consensus in parliament on the issue of accountability law.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The government has also succeeded in 80 percent implementation of the Charter of Democracy signed between Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, he said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>On the Pak-US relations, the prime minister said a joint session of parliament would be held soon in this regard. &ldquo;Pakistan, being a sovereign country, is taking all the decisions independently without any pressure,&rdquo; he added.<br />&nbsp;</p>
