4 killed in fresh Syria violence

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Activists said at least four people were killed in the town of Idlib after troops and tanks moved in a day earlier. Three soldiers and a civilian were also killed in fighting in the village of Janoudiya in Idlib province, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The violence coincided with visit by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan aimed at finding a solution to the Syrian bloodshed.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Annan who concluded his two-day visit on Sunday after he met with President Bashar al-Assad twice, said it would be hard to reach a peace deal, but expressed optimism, citing a general desire for peace in Syria. The former United Nations chief urged Assad to stop the killings and the abuses and seek a political settlement.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>There was no immediate word from Syrian officials on the outcome of the talks, but Assad told Annan on Saturday that &quot;terrorists&quot; spreading chaos and instability were blocking any political solution, according to the state news agency SANA.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But it said the 46-year-old president had also told Annan he would help in &quot;any honest effort to find a solution&quot;.<br />&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Habib Jalib was born on March 24, 1928 as Habib Ahmad in a village near Hoshiarpur, British India and died on March 12, 1993.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Renowned as a revolutionary poet, Jalib was a staunch democrat who opposed martial law, authoritarianism and state oppression.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He wrote his legendary poem &quot;Dastoor&quot; during imprisonment in Martial law regime of Ayub Khan.<br />His famous collections include Sir-e-Maqtal, Zikr Behte Khoon Ka, Gumbad-e-Bedar and Kulyaat-e-Habib Jalib.<br />&nbsp;</p>


SC to resume Waheeda Shahs case hearing today

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Supreme Court will today take up hearing of a suo motu case initiated after the Election Commission (EC) and Sindh Police failed to act against Waheeda Shah, the PPP leader who slapped a female polling staff member in Tando Muhammad Khan during the recent by-election.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In the last hearing, Waheeda Shah had sought forgiveness from the court and the aggrieved party, but the bench declined to accept her plea. While apologising, she had said that whatever happened on February 25 was unintentional and occurred at the spur of the moment &ldquo;in circumstances beyond human control&rdquo;. But the court said the issue had become a state matter and assured her that no injustice would be done to anyone. <br />&nbsp;</p>


Karachi: SP held in robbery case

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to police, the case against Superintendent of Police (SP) Zakir Hussain was registered on the application of heirs of a man named Afzal who was injured during the incident.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police have arrested Zakir Hussain and three other officials and recovered official vehicle and rifel from their possession.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to police there was a land dispute between the two parties. The applicants have accused that Zakir Hussain was released on the intervention of higher police official of Sohrab Goth police station.<br />&nbsp;</p>


14 construction workers killed in fire in Turkey

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>A fire engulfed a tent used as a dormitory for construction workers at an Istanbul construction site late Saturday, killing 14 people, a local official said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The workers were staying in a giant tent at the construction site of a supermarket, said Necmi Kadioglu, the mayor of Istanbul&nbsp;s Esenyurt district.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We suspect that the fire might have originated from an electrical heater,&quot; Kadioglu said, noting the cold weather in Istanbul.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Turkey&nbsp;s state-run television says the fire might have been sparked by a short circuit. Firefighters, working under floodlights despite the snow, managed to recover the bodies of the workers from the mangled ruins of the tent.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>An adjacent tent was also burned but it was not clear if any of the workers were staying there.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Istanbul is a vibrant city, home to more than 13 million people, and construction of high-rise buildings or giant shopping malls can be seen almost in every corner of the city.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Obama calls Karzai over Afghan shooting

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>US President Barack Obama called Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday &quot;to express his shock and sadness&quot; over a shooting in Afghanistan which a US soldier allegedly killed 16 civilians, the White House said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In the phone call, Obama &quot;extended his condolences to the people of Afghanistan, and made clear his administration&nbsp;s commitment to establish the facts as quickly as possible and to hold fully accountable anyone responsible,&quot; the White House said.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Annan ends Syria trip with no deal

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>International envoy and former U.N. chief Kofi Annan left Syria Sunday without a deal to end the bloody year-old conflict as regime forces mounted a new assault on rebel strongholds in the north.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Annan said he presented President Bashar Assad with concrete proposals &quot;which will have a real impact on the ground.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Once it&nbsp;s agreed, it will help launch the process and help end the crisis on the ground,&quot; he told reporters at the end of his two-day visit to Syria.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Annan, who also met with Syrian opposition leaders and businessmen in Damascus, said he was optimistic following two sets of talks with Assad, but acknowledged that resolving the crisis would be tough.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;It&nbsp;s going to be difficult but we have to have hope,&quot; he said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The former U.N. chief called for reforms that would create &quot;a solid foundation for a democratic Syria,&quot; but added: &quot;You have to start by stopping the killing and the misery and the abuse that is going on today and then give time for a political settlement.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The ongoing bloodshed cast a pall over the U.N. efforts to end the country&nbsp;s yearlong conflict, with both the regime and the opposition refusing talks with the other.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Woman among 3 shot dead in Karachi

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, some unidentified persons shot dead a man named Jahangir in Soldier Bazar area of Karachi. Police said the victim was shot dead during resistance in a robbery attempt.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Meanwhile, in Sohrab Goth area, 40-year-old Haseena Khatoon and 37-year-old Habib Ullah Magsi were shot dead by Haseena&rsquo;s husband Murad on suspicion of illicit relations. <br />&nbsp;</p>


Faisalabad: Youth injured in acid attack

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, 18-year-old Nabeela and 20-year-old Mohsin of Razabad area of Faisalabad were close to marry each other soon. On refusal from Mohsin, Nabeela threw acid on him, causing sever injuries to face of the victim.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Mohsin was rushed to the Allied Hospital where doctors have feared that he may lose his eye-sight. Police have registered a case and arrested Nabeela.<br />&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The PML-N Senator, Pervaiz Rashid has said that the central figure of Mehran Bank scam Younis Habib is trying to mislead the people and is levelling baseless allegations against Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif at the behest of President Zardari.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In a statement here he said that there is no truth in the allegations of Younis Habib as he is a henchman of President Zardari. <br />Senator Pervaiz Rashid said that the allegation against Nawaz Sharif of receiving funds are baseless and concocted and being repeated for the last 20 years.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He said that it is open secret how Younis Habib became the chairman of the bank overnight.<br />&nbsp;</p>
