| Amir accuses captain and agent of entrapment Posted:

Banned Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has accused former captain Salman Butt and agent Mazhar Majeed of tricking him into bowling deliberate no-balls in the 2010 Lord s test against England.

Amir, 19, returned home last month after serving three months in a young offenders institution in Britain for his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal. Butt, Majeed and pace bowler Mohammad Asif are still serving prison terms.

In an interview with Sky Sports screened on Monday, Amir, who has been banned from all cricket for five years, said he had sent his bank details to a businessman identified only as Ali during the 2010 tour. He had also sent text messages to Ali asking why he wanted the information.

Amir said on the day before the Lord s test that Mazhar had asked him to meet in his car. Butt later joined them.

He said Majeed had told him the International Cricket Council (ICC) was investigating the calls and texts to Ali but the case could be stopped if he bowled two no-balls in the forthcoming test. At practice subsequently, Butt had told him to practise bowling no-balls.

Amir said he had not been offered money at any stage but on the evening of the first day, after he had bowled the first no-ball, Majeed had come to his room and given him 1,500 pounds.

"He was happy...I knew why he was happy," he said. "No one is so stupid not to realise that if he was getting to deliver no-balls it must because of some sort of bet."

But Amir said he did not realise until the News of the World newspaper published details of a sting operation involving Majeed that it was the no-balls and not his relationship with Ali that were being investigated.

He said he knew nothing about a no-ball delivered by Asif and had not bowled his no-balls for money but because Majeed and Butt had told him he was in trouble over the texts to Ali.

"How was I manipulated? How was I made to do a thing like that? How was I trapped?," Amir said

"Why did those people do what they did to me? Up to now I have not been able to figure it out. However, I never did it for money."

|

| US to monitor parliamentary review debate Posted:

The US State Department s spokesperson, Victoria Nuland was asked Monday about the US administration s expectations as the parliament in Islamabad from Tuesday starts discussing the best way forward for Pakistan’s relations with U.S.

"We will obviously watch the parliamentary debate with interest, and we look forward to re-engaging with the Government of Pakistan when it has a sense of the results of that review," she stated.

On the time elapsed during the review process, she said the US had no issues with it. "We have said that we will give Pakistan the time and the space to have this parliamentary review," Ms Nuland pointed out.

Referring to President Zardari s address to the joint parliamentary session on Saturday, she said "President Zardari made a speech underscoring the importance of the relationship that we have together."

"One of the points in Pakistani discussions is that it has paid a heavy price in fighting terrorists along the Afghan border and its soldiers and civilians have been killed. And there is not enough acknowledgment of its role and the sacrifices it has made. What do you think about this point, which is discussed a lot in Pakistani media and think tanks?," asked a reporter during the briefing.

"Well, a point that we make almost every time we talk about the importance of US-Pakistani counter-terrorism cooperation is how much Pakistan has suffered -– its civilians as victims of terror and its soldiers in trying to defeat terror," the spokesperson acknowledged.

"So we understand the risk to Pakistani society, and that is among the reasons why we are so intent on trying to help and trying to work together to beat this scourge," she asserted.

The parliamentary review of the relationship with US started after the NATO attack on Salala check-post on November 26 last year that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan has since closed down ground supply routes for NATO from its territory in protest besides going for the overall review of the nature of bilateral ties.

- Contributed by Awais Saleem, Dunya News correspondent in Washington, DC

|

| Single gene mutation leads to uncontrolled obesity: study Posted:

Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center have revealed how a mutation in a single gene is responsible for the inability of neurons to effectively pass along appetite suppressing signals from the body to the right place in the brain. What results is obesity caused by a voracious appetite. Their study, published March 18th on Nature Medicine s website, suggests there might be a way to stimulate expression of that gene to treat obesity caused by uncontrolled eating.

The research team specifically found that a mutation in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (Bdnf) gene in mice does not allow brain neurons to effectively pass leptin and insulin chemical signals through the brain. In humans, these hormones, which are released in the body after a person eats, are designed to "tell" the body to stop eating. But if the signals fail to reach correct locations in the hypothalamus, the area in the brain that signals satiety, eating continues.

|
