SC hearing on dual nationality issue: Punjab PA pleads rules don't apply to it

ISLAMABAD, May 30: As four Pakistan People's Party (PPP) parliamentarians risk losing their National Assembly membership as a punishment for having dual nationality, the Punjab Assembly took a stand before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, stating that its rules did not require it to collect such information about its members.

According to a statement submitted to the SC by Additional Advocate General Jawad Hassan on behalf of the provincial assembly, no "information/record respecting the dual nationality of the members of provincial assembly of the Punjab" is required, "hence, no such information is available with" the provincial assembly secretariat...

Man dies in sectarian attack

Top Pentagon official returning to lead talks with Pakistan

WASHINGTON, May 30: US Assistant Defence Secretary Peter Levoy is returning to Islamabad next week to lead the American team which is negotiating a resolution to the Nato routes dispute with Pakistan, diplomatic sources told Dawn.

Subsidies for most sectors likely to be reduced

ISLAMABAD, May 30: The economic mangers have decided to cut down subsidies in the next budget on a majority of sectors in a bid to reduce budgetary constraints. However, subsidy to the power sector has been proposed to be raised.

An official of the finance ministry said it had been initially decided that the subsidy on electricity would be increased to Rs150 billion from around Rs147 billion of the current fiscal year...

EC can't act against PM before SC verdict: member

ISLAMABAD, May 30: The Election Commission cannot act on its own on the issue of disqualification of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and will wait for the outcome of the petitions challenging the ruling of the Speaker of the National Assembly, according to EC Member from Punjab Justice (retd) Riaz Kayani.

He told this reporter on Wednesday that the commission's role in the matter had ceased for the time being, but it would act if directives were issued by the Supreme Court...

Speaker's ruling cannot be questioned outside NA: Fehmida

ISLAMABAD, May 30: As far as National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza is concerned her ruling against sending a reference to the Election Commission on the issue of disqualification of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani cannot be questioned outside the house.

Talking to newsmen after inaugurating the campus of the Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Services here on Wednesday, she said: "If anybody has doubts about powers of the speaker, he should carefully read Rule 28 of the National Assembly to understand my position."..

Neurosurgeon Qureshi killed by kidnapper during rescue bid

HYDERABAD, May 30: Dr Aftab Qureshi, a senior faculty member of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences and eminent neurosurgeon, was gunned down allegedly by his kidnapper on Wednesday morning during an encounter which followed an attempt by a joint team of the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee and Anti-Violent Crime Unit (AVCU) of Karachi police to rescue the surgeon and other hostages.
