Industry, trade circles advise caution: India allows investments from Pakistan

KARACHI, Aug 1: India overturned on Wednesday a ban on foreign investment from Pakistan, the Indian commerce ministry said. According to reports reaching here, the move is aimed at building goodwill amid a renewed push for peace.

"The government of India has reviewed the policy and decided to permit a citizen of Pakistan or an entity incorporated in Pakistan to make investments in India," said a statement from the ministry...

Ephedrine case: Secretary accused of threatening officer

ISLAMABAD, Aug 1: Interior Secretary Khawaja Siddiq Akbar may find himself in troubled waters after a senior official of the government's drug regulatory body accused him on Wednesday of threatening him to exonerate the former health secretary from the ephedrine drug scam, or face consequences.

Considering the allegations as something to be looked into, the Supreme Court decided to summon the interior secretary for August 3 with an affidavit denying the allegation...

Asim supports call for reversing oil price hike

ISLAMABAD, Aug 1: Severely criticising the increase in prices of petroleum products, the standing committee of the National Assembly on petroleum and natural resources, supported by Prime Minister's Adviser on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain and PPP parliamentarians, unanimously demanded that the government should immediately revert the prices to the July 31 level.

The debate over the increase in oil prices by up to 9 per cent, misuse of natural gas by a textile mill belonging to the spouse of Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and gas shortfalls led to an exchange of hot words among members of the committee, particularly between PPP legislator from Muzaffargarh Jamshed Dasti and Dr Asim Hussain...

US releases $1.1 billion from CSF

WASHINGTON, Aug 1: The United States released $1.1 billion to Pakistan from the Coalition Support Fund hours after the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Islamabad for regulating Nato supplies to Afghanistan.

Suspect wounded in Pune blasts

NEW DELHI, Aug 1: Four successive explosions in Pune sent India's security agencies into a scramble on Wednesday and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said a man, the only one slightly wounded in the low intensity blasts around the city's cultural hub, was being interrogated as a suspect.

Mr Shinde, who was given the home portfolio in Tuesday's cabinet reshuffle, was scheduled to visit Pune on Wednesday. He clarified that a music auditorium, in the vicinity of one of the explosions, was not where he was due to attend a function. Mr Shinde is a senior Dalit leader from Maharashtra...
