Balochistan: foreigners using banned outfits, says Malik

ISLAMABAD, Aug 2: Describing the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) as a 'killing machine', Interior Minister Rehman Malik accused extremist organisations and banned outfits in Balochistan on Thursday of acting on directives from abroad and with complete support and assistance from Afghanistan.

"The BLA is a killing machine which is overhauled in Afghanistan and all its spare parts come from Afghanistan," the interior minister said in a speech in the Senate on the 'law and order situation in Balochistan'...

Chitral youths joining Afghan army

PESHAWAR, Aug 2: A large number of youths in the border areas of Chitral district have joined the Afghan National Army (ANA) and also offered services to Nato forces in Afghanistan, says a statement issued by the Home and Tribal Affairs Department on Thursday.

"The department has reliable information that a large number of unemployed youths belonging to Chitral have joined the Afghan National Army and are serving in Afghanistan," the statement said...

AG hurls charge of bias at apex court judges

ISLAMABAD, Aug 2: Attorney General Irfan Qadir commenced on Thursday his defence of the Contempt of Court Act 2012 before the Supreme Court but with a bumpy start. He first fired a salvo of bias at members of the bench and then regretted that former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had been convicted under a non-existing law.

The AG opened his arguments with allegations of bias against four members of a five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, hearing 27 challenges to the new contempt law...

NAB passes the buck back to SC in Arsalan case

ISLAMABAD, Aug 2: The National Accountability Bureau passed the buck back to the Supreme Court on Thursday to decide whether or not a joint investigation team (JIT) should probe the Arsalan Iftikhar-Malik Riaz graft case.

K.K. Agha, NAB's prosecutor general, informed the court that two members of the JIT (SP Islamabad Faisal Bashir Memom and FIA's Nasarullah Godal) who had been accused by Arsalan Iftikhar, son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, of being partial, had been taken out of the team, leaving the remaining three members, all belonging to NAB, to investigate the matter...

ISI chief holds talks in Washington on policy issues

WASHINGTON, Aug 2: ISI chief Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam had an important policy meeting at the State Department on Thursday with President Barack Obama's special coordinator for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Lt Gen Douglas E. Lute.

US Special Envoy Marc Grossman also attended the meeting. "Both sides stated their positions on various issues," said an official source, "expressing their desire to rebuild this important relationship"...

India's ex-army chief opposes N-power plant

NEW DELHI, Aug 2: Two months after he retired, former army chief General V.K. Singh has joined a campaign against a nuclear power plantplanned in his home state of Haryana, Indian Express reported on Thursday. The concerns of farmers, he said, must not be overlooked in the "myopic race for growth rate".

Joining an agitation against the plant in Gorakhpur in Haryana on Wednesday, Gen Singh told villagers not to throw their votes: "Choose a government which listens to you and whom you can tell what to do."..
