Free, fair polls only way out, says Raja

ISLAMABAD, Aug 6: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said on Monday that the only way forward now was free and fair elections in the country.

Talking to journalists at an Iftar-dinner hosted by him, Mr Ashraf said: “The media and judiciary have become independent and now it is time to give the same status to parliament. I strongly believe that the next general election to be held under a fully independent election commission will strengthen democracy.”...

Parliament be wrapped up, Altaf says sarcastically

KARACHI, Aug 6: In what appeared to be a veiled reference to the scrapping of the new contempt of court law by the Supreme Court, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain said on Monday that if making laws was not the business of parliament then the parliamentary system should be wrapped up.

Removal of 8 power firms’ CEs ordered

ISLAMABAD, Aug 6: The Senate Standing Committee on Water and Power ordered on Monday immediate removal of 28 senior contractual employees, including eight chief executives of power companies of Wapda, and called for an investigation to ascertain if 19,254 employees had been inducted by the present government into the companies in violation of rules and the principle of merit.
A meeting of the committee headed by Senator Zahid Khan of the ANP held that extension given to 28 top power sector executives not only violated an order of the Supreme Court but were also against rules and were unfair to officers deserving promotion...

German boring machines for AJK power project

MUZAFFARABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf inaugurated on Monday two advanced German tunnel-boring machines for the 969 megawatt Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Majhoi village, about 20km south of here along the Jhelum valley road, he said as minister for water and power he had proposed that work on the project should be speeded up under a plan to overcome the energy crisis. Local journalists were not invited to the ceremony, apparently to avoid questions regarding delay in the signing of a formal agreement with the AJK government and measures to mitigate the adverse environmental effects of the project...

Afghan peace negotiator to discuss Pak role tomorrow

ISLAMABAD, Aug 6: Top Afghan peace negotiator Salahuddin Rabbani is due here on Wednesday for a two-day visit to discuss Pakistan’s possible role in the reconciliation efforts.
Cautious optimism prevails here ahead of Mr Rabbani’s trip, seen by diplomatic observers as extremely important. While everyone agrees that the visit may help the reconciliation effort, they are not very hopeful about something major coming out of it...
