Aitzaz: Party will keep electing new PM till elections

Quetta shakes off fear, celebrates Aug 14

QUETTA, Aug 14: For the first time in recent years, Quetta reverberated with slogans of “Pakistan Zindabad” as people in their thousands thronged various streets on cars, rickshaws, motorcycles and on foot.

As in other cities and towns in the country there was a festive mood all over the Balochistan capital.

Debate in PPP on ‘middle way out’ of standoff

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14: As the date for next hearing in the NRO implementation case draws near, the ruling party is feverishly trying to find a “middle way out” of the current executive-judiciary standoff as suggested by the Supreme Court recently.

The court will take up the case on Aug 27. And the Pakistan People’s Party is discussing its available options.

25 militants, two troops killed in Orakzai clash

KALAYA, Aug 14: Security forces took control of the strategic post of Dalanai in Orakzai Agency on Tuesday after a fierce clash in which 25 militants and two troops were killed.

Sources said 22 security men, including a captain, were injured in the morning in the area, about 78km north of Ghaljo, the headquarters of upper Orakzai tehsil and a strong base of militants.

Raja offers dialogue to opposition on polls

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14: It appears that the PPP is playing ‘good cop, bad cop’ at the moment. While President Asif Ali Zardari in his speech on the eve of Independence Day warned the parliament and people of ‘new forms’ of assault on the Constitution, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has stayed away from any controversial issue in his speech on Tuesday.

Instead, he used the speech at a ceremony held to commemorate the day to offer an olive branch to the opposition and called for dialogue to ensure a smooth transition to general elections. Prime Minister Ashraf, who has been served with a subpoena by the Supreme Court in the NRO judgment implementation case whose hearing is scheduled for Aug 27, steered clear of the court proceedings in his lengthy speech.

Pakistan preparing for Waziristan operation: Panetta

WASHINGTON, Aug 14: The United States and Pakistan are discussing various options for rooting out terrorist bases from the tribal belt but have not yet finalised a plan, diplomatic sources told Dawn.

On Monday, US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta told AP news agency that Pakistan had decided to launch a military operation against the Pakistani Taliban in North Waziristan.

Marketing firms to fix oil prices from Sept 1

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14: The government has decided to pull itself out of the process of fixing prices of major petrol products, limit the role of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) and allow marketing companies to fix retail prices with effect from Sept 1.

It is believed the government hopes that the decision would divert the public anger over oil price increases towards oil marketing agencies.

Zardari and Karzai discuss bilateral ties, regional situation

MAKKAH, Aug 14: President Asif Ali Zardari and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai met here on Tuesday on the sidelines of an extraordinary summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

The two leaders discussed bilateral ties, regional situation, peace process in Afghanistan and other issues of mutual concern.

PTI, JI to have say in caretaker set-up: Gilani

LAHORE, Aug 14: In addition to the parties in parliament, the Pakistan People’s Party has decided in principle to involve the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf and Jamaat-i-Islami in the consultative process for setting up a caretaker government, according to former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

“Yes, we have decided to involve the PTI and JI in the consultative process for the caretaker set-up which will soon begin,” Mr Gilani said.

Afghanistan says shelling killed guard

KABUL, Aug 14: An official in eastern Afghanistan has said that shelling from across the border in Pakistan has killed at least one Afghan border guard, raising tensions between the neighbours.

A spokesman for Kunar province said that at least 83 rockets landed in the area. He said a battle between Afghan and Pakistan border patrols broke out on Tuesday morning.—AP
