‘Raja may not appear before SC on 27th’: PM not answerable to court, says AG

ISLAMABAD, Aug 15: Flaunting a defiant posture, Attorney General Irfan Qadir dropped a hint before the Supreme Court on Wednesday that Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf might not appear before it on August 27 to answer the charges of contempt.

Reinstatement of judges be referred to parliament, says Gilani

MULTAN, Aug 15: Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the judiciary should send the executive order about judges’ reinstatement to parliament for endorsement.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr Gilani said he had reinstated the sacked judges through an executive order and like the National Reconciliation Ordinance this also should be sent to parliament for endorsement.

PPP to protest adverse ruling

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party dropped a clear hint on Wednesday that if Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf was sent home by the Supreme Court it would protest against the decision.

Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, when asked if the party endorsed a recent statement made by former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani warning the apex court against sacking PM Ashraf and threatening a protest movement, said: “The party will consider his point of view seriously.”

CJ to uphold law, come what may

ISLAMABAD, Aug 15: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Wednesday he would go to any extent to uphold the Constitution and law and to protect fundamental rights of citizens.

“No institution, no office no matter how high it may be is above the law and the Constitution,” the chief justice said, adding that the judiciary would keep on dispensing justice, come what may.

Chinese among eight kidnapped

LADHA, Aug 15: Eight employees of the Gomal Zam Dam project were kidnapped from Murtaza Goth area along the border between the lawless South Waziristan and Tank district on Wednesday evening.

Sources said the project workers were on two pick-ups coming to Tank from the dam site in South Waziristan. When they reached Murtaza Goth near Gradawi, some 30km west of Tank, armed militants intercepted their pick-ups and kidnapped them along with the vehicles.

Kayani sounded right themes, says US military chief

WASHINGTON, Aug 15: The Pakistani army chief sounded “the right themes” in his Independence Day speech, says the US military chief as the US defence secretary acknowledged that militants in Afghanistan were conducting cross-border attacks into Pakistan.

In a similar conciliatory note, the US State Department dismissed as ‘hypotheticals’, media reports claiming that Pakistani troops might enter Afghanistan while pursuing Taliban militants.

Umpire Asad Rauf rules himself not out

NEW DELHI, Aug 15: Renowned Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf has denied involvement with an Indian model who accused him of falsely promising to marry her, Press Trust of India said on Wednesday.

“I am 56 and happily married with two kids and at my age how can I promise to marry anyone else. I don’t know why she is doing this but if she continues to defame me and cause me and my family pain then I will take legal action against her,” Mr Rauf told PTI..

PML-N rejects PM’s offer for talks on caretaker set-up

ISLAMABAD, Aug 15: The Pakistan Muslim League-N has dismissed as unnecessary and a distraction an offer made by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf for talks on a caretaker set-up for holding general elections.

Talking to reporters at the Punjab House here on Wednesday, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly and PML-N stalwart Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said his party had no intention of having an interaction with the PPP-led coalition on the issue of a caretaker set-up because it was not necessary under the Constitution after the passage of the 20th Amendment.

Request for shifting Bugti case to FIA turned down

ISLAMABAD, Aug 15: The federal government has turned down a request of the Balochistan government to shift the investigation of Nawab Akbar Bugti’s murder case to the Federal Investigation Agency and asked it to let the Crimes Branch Quetta and a joint investigation team (JIT) to carry out the probe, Dawn has learnt.

Informed sources said senior officials, including interior secretary, had opposed the move, apparently in view of political implications.

Non-bailable warrants

SIBI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has issued non-bailable arrest warrants for those who have been nominated accused in the Nawab Akbar Bugti murder case.

A spokesman for Kunar province said that at least 83 rockets landed in the area. He said a battle between Afghan and Pakistan border patrols broke out on Tuesday morning.—AP

PAF’s Mirage fighter crashes; pilot bails out safely

MIANWALI, Aug 15: A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) plane crashed in Bhakkar on Wednesday but the pilot bailed out safely.

The Miraj fighter was on routine training mission after taking off from Sargodha base when it caught fire and crashed into the fields.

NAB accepts payment in housing project case

ISLAMABAD, Aug 15: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has accepted a voluntary return of Rs442 million in a case relating to Karachi’s Karim housing project.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the NAB executive board held on Wednesday with Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari in the chair.

US boosts intelligence system

WASHINGTON, Aug 15: The Pentagon said on Tuesday it was expanding counter-intelligence staff in Afghanistan after a rise in insider attacks by Afghans thought to be friendly to US forces but who have killed 37 US and Nato troops so far this year.

Last Friday, six US troops were killed in two incidents, one which saw an Afghan police commander and several of his men kill three elite US Marines after inviting them to an Iftar meeting to discuss security.

Illegal aliens get chance to acquire work permit

WASHINGTON, Aug 15: Hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants scrambled to get papers in order on Wednesday as the US started accepting applications to allow them to avoid deportation and get a work permit — but not a path to citizenship.

President Barack Obama announced the programme in June after pressure from Hispanic voters and others who said he hasn't fulfilled a campaign promise to overhaul tangled US immigration laws.
