MIRAMSHAH / KHAR, Aug 17: Tribal areas will live up to their tradition of celebrating Eidul Fitr one day before rest of the country this year, too, as self-styled Ruet committees in North Waziristan and Bajaur agencies claimed on Friday that they had received enough evidence about sighting of Shawwal moon.

By celebrating Eid on Saturday, the region will, however, break with the tradition of following Saudi Arabia since the authorities in Riyadh announced that moon was not sighted on Friday and Eid would fall on Sunday...

Psychiatrist kidnapped from Quetta returns

SC hearing on NICL case: Interpol help sought to bring back scam accused

ISLAMABAD, Aug 17: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) informed the Supreme Court on Friday that Interpol’s assistance had been sought to bring back to the country Mohsin Habib Warriach, one of the accused in the multi-billion-rupee National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) scam, who had absconded.

FIA’s Director Legal Mohammad Azam said that the agency’s director general had ordered completion of investigation against Mohsin Warriach in a week and cancellation of his passport....

Singh govt under a cloud as audit questions coal deals

NEW DELHI, Aug 17: India’s auditor general dealt a new blow to the beleaguered Manmohan Singh government on Friday, saying it had lost billions of dollars by failing to auction coal mining rights to companies in transparent manner.

Brig Ali seeks record of trial proceedings

ISLAMABAD, Aug 17: Brigadier (retd) Ali Khan, who has been convicted by the Field General Court Martial (FGCM) and sentenced to five-year rigorous imprisonment for having links with a banned outfit, submitted an application to the army chief on Friday seeking record of the trial proceedings to prepare an appeal against his sentence.

Advocate Inam-ul-Rahiem, who had represented Brig Ali in the FGCM, told Dawn that his client intended to challenge his conviction in the Army Court of Appeal. Brig Ali’s application has been submitted to the army chief through the JAG Branch...

US, Pakistan likely to revive strategic talks next month

Jihad to continue after Nato pullout: Mullah Omar

KABUL, Aug 17: The reclusive leader of the Taliban, Mullah Omar, has issued a bellicose Eid message claiming victories on the battlefield against Nato but also defending initial contacts, now suspended, with the US.

In an apparent move to allay fears among some Taliban factions, Omar said in a seven-page statement posted on the group’s website that initial talks with the United States “had not meant submission or abandoning our goals”....
