11 militants, 3 soldiers killed in BajaurBy Anwarullah KhanKHAR, Aug 28: Eleven militants of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, three security personnel and a member of Salarzai Qaumi Lashkar were killed and several others injured as fighting intensified in Salarzai tehsil of Bajaur tribal region on Tuesday. Sources said that fierce clashes between security forces and Taliban have taken place in several areas of Salarzai tehsil in which both sides used heavy weapons. | ||||||||||||||
PML-N has 9 names for caretaker PMBy Our Staff ReporterISLAMABAD, Aug 28: The main opposition Pakistan Muslim League-N on Tuesday added grist to the early elections rumour mill by announcing that it had short-listed nine names to head a caretaker government. At the same time, it accused the ruling PPP of having already started pre-poll rigging. Talking to reporters at Punjab House, Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the PML-N would disclose the names it had short-listed for the post of prime minister after holding consultations with other opposition parties, including the Jamaat-i-Islami, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf and nationalist parties. | ||||||||||||||
Babar to head commission on provincesBy Amir WasimISLAMABAD, Aug 28: PPP Senator and Presidency’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar was unanimously elected chairman of the controversial Parliamentary Commission on Creation of New Provinces in Punjab which held its fist meeting on Tuesday despite a boycott by its PML-N members.Talking to reporters outside the Parliament House after his election, Mr Babar requested the PML-N to end its boycott of the commission. He announced that the commission would meet again on Wednesday to frame its rules of business and prepare the terms of reference. Mr Babar’s name for the chairmanship was proposed by PPP’s Jamshed Dasti and seconded by PML-Q’s Kamil Ali Agha and other members. National Assembly’s Secretary Karamat Hussain Niazi presided over the meeting. | ||||||||||||||

Singapore allowed to quit port contractBy Khaleeq KianiISLAMABAD, Aug 28: The Singapore Port Authority (SPA) and its partners —National Logistics Cell and AKD group — have finally been allowed to quit the Gwadar Port’s 40-year management and development contract after the government’s failure to transfer 584 acres of land in adverse possession of Pakistan Navy at the mouth of the port to pave way for its takeover by China. “We have not been able to meet contractual obligations and resolve land issues. As a result they (SPA and its partners) have gone under duress and we issued them an NOC (no objection certificate) yesterday to give up their (management, operation, maintenance and development) contract,” Ports and Shipping Minister Babar Khan Ghauri told a meeting of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping on Tuesday. Sardar Fateh Muhammad Hassani chaired the meeting. “Now the Chinese will take over the Gwadar Port,” he said. He indicated that China would invest $10 billion to develop the port and manage its operations, but did not go into details about the proposed agreement. | ||||||||||||||

SC reserves verdict on Arsalan’s review petitionBy Nasir IqbalISLAMABAD, Aug 28: The Supreme Court reserved on Tuesday its judgment on a petition moved by Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, seeking review of the court’s June 14 order which asked the attorney general to handle the controversy relating to allegations of a Rs342 million business deal between Dr Arsalan and property tycoon Malik Riaz. “We will announce the verdict in a day or two after consulting each other,” Justice Jawwad S. Khwaja, who heads a two-judge bench, said before closing the arguments. | ||||||||||||||
