Bolt seals legendary status with unique double Posted: Usain Bolt made history on Thursday when the Jamaican successfully defended his Olympic 200m crown to claim an unprecedented second successive sprint double.Bolt, who retained his 100m title on Saturday, crossed the line in the equal fourth fastest time of all time of 19.32sec to win in front of a delirious sell-out 80,000 crowd at the Olympic Stadium. The 25-year-olds victory meant he bettered the record of US track legend Carl Lewis, who won three golds and a silver in the sprints at the 1984 and 1988 Games.Bolt said: This is the one I wanted and I got it.It was also the first time two individual track titles were successfully defended at successive Games since Finlands Lasse Viren won the 5000m and 10,000m in the Munich and Montreal Games in 1972 and 1976.Bolt led a Jamaican clean sweep of the podium, with training partner Yohan Blake taking silver in 19.44sec and Warren Weir claiming a shock bronze in 19.84sec.The only thing missing from the race was a new world record for Bolt, but he revealed he had felt his back during the race.I could feel the straion on my back a little bit so all I did was try to keep my form, run home and when I saw where I was going I stopped running because I knew it wasnt going to be a world record.Running in lane seven, Bolt was up on Weir outside him within five paces after an explosive start. As he rounded the bend, Blake briefly threatened from lane four, but teeth clenched, eyes on the big screen and at full tilt, Bolt had enough to slow down a full 10 metres from the line, raising his finger to his lips as he did so.Whether that gesture was for title contender Blake or this seasons growing band of doubters, only Bolt knows, but his victory underlined his position as the greatest sprinter on the planet. The London Games are Bolts fourth global championship since 2008.He has won six titles in the seven individual events in which he has competed, his one blip coming when he was disqualifed from the Daegu world championship 100m final last year after a false start.Bolt, also the world record holder in both the 100 and 200m, was not quite his usual playful self in the moments before he settled, an air of seriousness permeating a silenced stadium as he offered a regal-like wave.Amid the tangible tension, Bolt briefly crossed himself and pointed skywards before setting himself. The starters gun signalled a dramatic change in mood as a determined Bolt pulled out all the stops to burn off his rivals from the off.Apart from Bolt, eight men (Archie Hahn (1904), Ralph Craig (1912), Percy Williams (1928), Eddie Tolan (1932), Jesse Owens (1936),Bobby Morrow (1956), Valeriy Borzov (1972), Carl Lewis (1984), have won the sprint double at the same Olympics, but only Hahn and Lewis have successfully defended the short sprint.Hahn missed out on his chance of a double-double when the 200m was not included in the 1906 Games and Lewis, after being upgraded to 100m champion in Seoul following Ben Johnsons disqualification, lost to US teammate Joe DeLoach in the 200m. |
Rudisha sets 800m world record for Olympic gold Posted: David Rudisha predicted a world record and delivered with an overpowering show of front-running to win the Olympic 800-meter title. When many were hoping that Usain Bolt would set such a mark in the 200 later Thursday, the Kenyan stole some of the Jamaican sprinters thunder at the beginning of a balmy evening suited for setting great times.Rudisha set off with his giant strides from the starting gun, immediately took the lead and steadily built on it, as many of the years greatest middle distance runners could never even get close. He finished in 1 minute 40.91 seconds, shaving .10 of a second off the mark he set in 2010.Yes, hes the greatest runner, said Timothy Kitum, Rudishas teammate who took bronze. He told me hes going to run a word record today. Hes the best.Immediately, he lifted his arms in victory as the time flashed just next to him and the 80,000-capacity crowds at the Olympic Stadium erupted in wild cheers, celebrating the first world record of the track and field program. In the stands chief Olympic organizer Seb Coe and IAAF President Lamine Diack were shaking hands to celebrate the success. That was simply an unbelievable performance, Coe said. Rudisha showed supreme physical and mental confidence to run like that in an Olympic final.Instead of just doing enough to win the race he wanted to do something extraordinary, said Coe, a former middle-distance champion.Rudishas run will go down in history as one of the greatest Olympic victories. |

But there were still some nerves in the field, with a rare false start in the 1,500.Eaton needed to slash six seconds off his fastest ever time in the 1,500 to break his world record, but ran a cautious race and finished well outside his personal best in 4 minutes, 33.59 seconds. |

It was very hard, but I tried my best. I just have to go to my bed.Semenya is making her Olympic debut. She was sidelined for nearly a year while track and fields governing body decided whether to allow her to compete after she won the 2009 world title at age 18. She was tested and eventually cleared to return to action in 2010, then was the runner-up at last years world championships.Weve done a lot of training, and its a matter of time, Semenya said. Pumping the legs, put on the spikes, just run. Doesnt matter which result. So long as youre in the final. I think its very important.Semenya carried South Africas flag at the opening ceremony in London and is a leading medal contender in the 800.Its the right time, Semenya said. Now I have to go rest and think about the final. Nothing else. ... I think the time makes me very confident.Sometimes, if you want to run a good race, you just have to forget about everybody and think about your own race. It can disturb you, but you have to think of yourself. When you cross the line, its what matters. |
Olympics: US relay runner Mitchell breaks leg in race Posted: US sprinter Manteo Mitchell suffered a broken leg when running for his team in Thursdays Olympic Games 4x400m relay semi-final, but still managed to finish his lap.The US team finished second to the Bahamas in the heat in identical times of 2:58.87, the fastest time ever run in the first round of the relay at the Olympics. The 25-year-old Mitchell had slipped on a stairway in the Olympic Village earlier this week, and that misfortune reared its head after just 100 metres of his one-lap run.Three days ago I was going up the stairs and I kind of missed one and landed awkwardly, Mitchell said.I got treatment and I was fine. I did workouts, and when I warmed up today I felt really well. I felt I could go 44 (seconds)-low.I got out pretty slow, but I picked it up and when I got to the 100m mark it felt weird. I was thinking I just didnt feel right. As soon as I took the first step past the 200m mark, I felt it break.Mitchell added: I heard it. I even put out a little war cry, but the crowd was so loud you couldnt hear it. I wanted to just lie down. It felt like somebody literally just snapped my leg in half.I knew if I finished strong we could still get it (the baton) around. I saw Josh Mance motioning me in for me to hand it off to him, which lifted me. I didnt want to let those three guys down, or the team down, so I just ran on it. It hurt so bad. Im pretty amazed that I still split 45 seconds on a broken leg. After the race, Mitchell was taken to the Athlete Village medical area, where his leg was x-rayed and diagnosed by team doctor Bob Adams as a break of his left fibula bone.Team USA will announce the final line-up for the mens 4x400m final on Friday. |
Oil prices firm amid positive US, China data Posted: US crude prices landed flat Thursday after getting an early lift from some slightly buoyant data on the US jobs market, raised demand forecasts from OPEC, and Chinese economic data as well.In New York the benchmark contract, West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery, finished just one cent higher over Wednesday at $93.36 a barrel. In London, Brent North Sea crude gained $1.08 to $113.22, the highest closing price since May 7.Somewhat positive economic data underpinned crudes strength, analysts said.Official data Thursday showed US weekly jobless claims fell to 361,000 -- another sign of moderate strength in the biggest economys employment market despite a second-quarter lull in hiring. That kept a floor under the crude price, according to John Kilduff of Again Capital.Meanwhile Chinas inflation rate fell to 1.8 percent in July, the lowest since January 2010, providing authorities with more leeway to ease monetary policy to boost the economy.Obviously the fact that the inflations eased... has opened the door to stimulus, which will be good for all commodities, including oil, said Justin Harper, analyst at IG Markets Singapore trading group. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) also came out more bullish on oil demand. The cartel raised its world oil demand forecast to 88.72 million barrels per day in 2012 and to 89.52 million barrels a day in 2013. |
