Dutch win 2nd straight Olympic women's hockey gold Posted: The Netherlands retained their womens Olympic field hockey title with a 2-0 win over world champion Argentina at Riverbank Arena on Friday. The Dutch scored off two second-half penalty corners to join Australia as the only three-time Olympic champions. The final was riveting until Carlien Dirkse van den Heuvel scored from a rebound of Eva de Goedes corner in the 40th minute. Then the Dutch turned rampant, and after captain Maartje Paumen had a corner saved, she didnt miss the next chance a minute later in the 54th. Her 14thOlympic goal and third in London gave her sole possession of the overall record. The two goals took the air out of the Argentines, who were seeking their first gold medal. |
US break world record in women's 4x100 Posted: Pointing the baton at the clock showing the world-record time of 40.82 seconds, Carmelita Jeter anchored the United States on Friday night to its first Olympic gold medal in the womens 4x100-meter relay since 1996.Tianna Madison, 200-meter champion Allyson Felix and Bianca Knight gave the U.S. a big lead heading into the anchor leg by Jeter, who already owned a silver medal from the 100 and a bronze from the 200 in London.Their final time cut more than a half-second off the old record of 41.37 run by East Germany in 1985.Jamaica won the silver medal Friday in a national record of 41.41 seconds, with 100 champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Sherone Simpson, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart bringing the baton around. The bronze went to the Ukraine in 42.04.With Knight approaching for the final handoff, Jeter took nine strides, reached her hand back and took a perfect exchange. Jeter was staring at the clock as she covered the final 10 meters and used the stick in her left hand to make sure everyone else also had their eyes trained on the bright orange numbers on the trackside clock.Afterward, the quartet of champions paused to watch a replay of their record performance on the scoreboard at 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium. When Jeter was shown crossing the finish line, Knight punched the air.The perfect trip around the track ended a string of disappointments for the U.S. in the event. At Beijing four years ago, the Americans didnt even reach the final because Torri Edwards and Lauryn Williams bobbled the last exchange in the semifinals. That marked the first time since 1948 that the U.S. wasnt involved in the womens 4x100 medal race at the Summer Games. |

S Korea win mens football Olympic bronze Posted: Park Chu-young scored a brilliant individual goal to help South Korea to a 2-0 victory over regional rivals Japan on Friday and its first medal in Olympic mens football. The bronze was also the first by any Asian team since 1968, when Japan took third place.Japan, which looked tired in its semifinal defeat to Mexico, started the match brighter.South Korea showed signs of frustration, with three players booked in the first 35 minutes before Parks goal in the 38th changed the course of the match. The striker, who was a substitute in South Koreas 3-0 semifinal loss to Brazil, picked up a deflected clearance just inside his own half, ran past two retreating defenders and then shot low past goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda.Park signed for Arsenal last year, but has not made the first team. British media reports this week said he will be leaving the North London club before the new season begins later this month.South Korea doubled its lead 10 minutes into the second half. After striker Yuki Otsu came close for Japan, keeper Jung Sung-ryong quickly kicked a ball upfield that was headed into the path of Koo Ja-cheol, who controlled with one touch then scored with his second in the 57th. Gonda kept his side in the match minutes later, pushing a powerful shot from Kim Bok-yung onto the right post.Otsu came close in the 67th, but failed to connect with a good pass into the box by substitute Kazuya Yamamura.Japan made three substitutes to try and make a breakthrough, yet struggled to get into good positions against a well-drilled South Korean defense. Olympics: China fall behind in medal race Posted: China dropped further behind the United States on the London Olympics medals table Friday after their first day without a win, as South Korea beat fierce rivals Japan to claim mens football bronze. With two days of competition left, China were four behind the United States with 37 gold medals to 41, well short of the table-topping 51 they amassed at the Beijing Games in 2008.Chinas best performance of day 14 was silver in the synchronised swimming team event, behind hot favourites Russia who completed their fourth consecutive clean sweep. We are still some distance from Russia. They will be our targets in the future for a long while, said Chinas coach Zhang Xiaolei.Maybe gold will be our long-term aim. Russia is our motivation. The Russians have ballet, so they have a stronger arts foundation. There are differences in speed and body condition.Qiu Bo will expect to collect Chinas seventh diving gold medal in Saturdays 10m platform final, after leading Fridays qualifiers. British hope Tom Daley went through in 15th.Hwang Kyung-Seon claimed South Koreas 15th gold medal of the Games in the womens under-67kg taekwondo, cementing fifth position on the medals table. It feels like flying. The other players prepared well, but I think I had a lot of luck, said Hwang, after taking South Koreas first gold of the taekwondo competition.Meanwhile South Koreas men beat Japan 2-0 in the play-off for bronze to claim the countrys first ever Olympic football medal -- and regional bragging rights.Japan were bidding to emulate the Japanese team of 1968, who won bronze at the Mexico Games, but despite enjoying more possession, the Asian champions were twice unpicked by their opponents clinical counter-attacks.Arsenal striker Park Chu-Young and captain Koo Ja-Cheol scored either side of half-time, as the Taeguk Warriors claimed a measure of revenge for the senior sides penalty shoot-out loss to Japan at last years Asian Cup.This is one of the most special moments for me and my team, said Koo.Im very proud to be one of the first footballers to become medallists in Korean history.South Koreas government had promised to spare the players military service if they won the bronze medal and the final whistle sparked wild celebrations from the victors, while Japans players slumped to the turf in despair.Im really upset about the outcome. We were able to play our football, but the result just didnt follow, said Japan striker Kensuke Nagai. But its been a really good experience and I hope that we can achieve a better result next time.Japan were also disappointed in the womens football final, when the world champions lost 2-1 to the United States on Thursday. |
Storm Ernesto kills five in Mexico Posted: Ernesto killed five people in Mexico, officials said Friday, with the weakening storm threatening more heavy rain and possible flooding.A 17-year-old fisherman drowned off the coast of the southeastern town of Centla, according to authorities, and the body of a second victim was found in a river near Cunduacan, also in the southeast. In the southwestern Mexican state of Veracruz, another three people died when a tree fell on their van, according to the Civil Protection Agency.Ernesto, which has been downgraded to a tropical depression, made landfall for a second time near the Mexican port of Coatzacoalcos on Thursday, dumping heavy rain and causing flooding in the Gulf coast region. The storm is now dissipating over Southern Mexico, 214 miles (345 kilometers) west-southwest of Veracruz, according to the US-based National Hurricane Center. It first became a hurricane on Tuesday, before being downgraded to a tropical storm and heading back out to sea.As the storm moves inland, some areas could still see up to 15 inches (38 centimeters) of rain before skies clear, the NHC said, adding that the storm would likely disintegrate late Friday.Mexican civil defense officials said 10 communities had been cut off by flooding, although no major damage was reported. The states of Veracruz, Tabasco, Puebla, Oaxaca and Guerrero were expected to see downpours through Friday night. These rainfall amounts may produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, the NHC warned, but all coastal watches and warnings have been lifted.Ernesto -- which was the second hurricane of the Atlantic season -- had already been buffeting Caribbean countries last week and also dumped heavy rain on areas of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. In the Pacific, Gilma, which had swelled into a category one hurricane on Wednesday, was downgraded to a tropical storm and expected to weaken further.According to the latest NHC bulletin, it was 675 miles (1,085 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California and was not expected to make landfall. On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration raised the severity of its predictions for the current hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 to November 30.The latest outlook calls for 12 to 17 named storms, including five to eight hurricanes, of which two to three could be major. In May, it had forecast nine to 15 named storms. |
Oil falls on lower demand outlook, China data Posted: The price of oil fell Friday on fresh concerns about the Chinese economy and a lower forecast for global oil demand from the International Energy Agency.China said Friday that the countrys exports grew just 1 percent in July from a year earlier while import growth slowed to 4.7 percent. That suggests growth continues to slow in the worlds second-largest economy.Meanwhile, the IEA lowered its forecast for global crude demand for the year to 89.6 million barrels a day from 89.9 million. That included a downward revision of 200,000 barrels a day for China. The agency also cut its forecast for oil demand in 2013 to 90.5 million barrels per day from 90.9 million previously. The IEA said the reduction was due to a combination of persistently high (oil) prices and a weak economic backdrop.Benchmark crude fell 49 cents to end at $92.87 a barrel in New York. In London. Brent crude dropped 27 cents to $112.95 on the ICE Futures exchange.U.S. crude still finished the week with a gain of $1.47 per barrel while Brent rose $4.01 per barrel.Oil has for the most part followed a pattern over the past few weeks. It falls initially after gloomy economic news from Europe or China, but then recovers on hopes government officials or central bankers will act to boost their economies. Oil then drops again when no action is forthcoming.Phil Flynn of Price Futures Group suggests that scenario may be played out.The market is getting a little tired of promises with no action, he said. He expects oil prices to ratchet down without new stimulus measures. In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange natural gas fell 17.5 cents, or 5.9 percent, to $2.77 per 1,000 cubic feet, the lowest close in a month, and heating oil fell 2.45 cents to $3.0205 per gallon. |
Dollar rises after weak data from China Posted: China said on Friday that its exports rose 1 percent over a year earlier. Thats below the 5 percent economists expected. Import growth fell to 4.7 percent from 6.3 percent the previous month, also below expectations.China is the worlds second-largest economy. Fridays weak data is a reminder that the global economy may be slowing down. Traders tend to buy the U.S. currency, which is considered a safer bet, when they think economic conditions are getting worse. The euro slipped to $1.2294 late Friday from $1.2296 late Thursday. The dollar fell to 78.26 Japanese yen from 78.57 yen, to 0.9766 Swiss franc from 0.9768 Swiss franc and to 99.19 Canadian cents from 99.21 Canadian cents. The British pound rose to $1.5673 from $1.5635. |
NASA: Mars rover snapped pic of rocket stage crash Posted: Space enthusiasts have been abuzz for days over whether the Mars rover Curiosity captured an extraterrestrial crash. On Friday, NASA declared the mystery solved.Seconds after the car-size rover parked its six wheels in an ancient crater, a tiny camera under the chassis snapped a picture revealing a smudge on the horizon. The feature disappeared in a later photo. Was it dirt on the camera lens or a spinning dust devil? It turned out Curiosity spotted the aftermath of its rocket-powered backpack crash-landing in the distance. It was an amazing coincidence that we were able to catch this impact, said engineer Steve Sell of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $2.5 billion mission. The nuclear-powered rover landed in Gale Crater near the equator Sunday night to study whether environmental conditions could have favored microbes. Its ultimate target is a mountain looming from the crater floor where mineral signatures of water have been spied.Curiosity performed a novel, complex landing routine. In the final seconds, the rocket stage hovered as cables delicately lowered the rover to the ground. After landing, it cut the cords and the rocket stage flew out of the way, crashing 2,000 feet (610 meters) from the landing site.Speeding at 100 mph (161 kph), the high-speed impact kicked up a plume of dust which showed up in Curiositys field of view.Curiosity was in the right place at the right time and facing the right direction, Sell said.Since the feat, Curiosity has returned a flood of pictures including a 360-degree color view and a low-resolution video featuring the last minutes of its descent. Over the weekend, it will get a software update, a process that will take four days. During the hiatus, stored data will continue to be downloaded. It will be weeks before Curiosity can take its first drive, zap at boulders or dig up soil in search of the chemical building blocks of life. The prime mission lasts two years.A preliminary reconstruction of the seven minutes of terror plunge through the Martian atmosphere revealed everything went as planned. Curiosity ended up 1 1/2 miles (2.41 kilometers) downrange from the bulls-eye target, probably because of tail winds and a late steering turn. Were still happy where we landed, said Gavin Mendeck of the NASA Johnson Space Center. |
