Iran earthquakes kill at least 180, injure 1,300 Posted: Two strong earthquakes leveled villages and damaged homes in northwestern Iran on Saturday, killing at least 180 people and injuring more than 1,350 others, state TV reported. Thousands of people spent the night outdoors as aftershocks rattled the area. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that Saturdays first quake at 4:53 p.m. (1223 GMT) had a magnitude of 6.4 and struck 37 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 kilometers (6.2 miles). Its epicenter was a region between the towns of Ahar and Haris, about 200 miles (500 kilometers) northwest of the capital Tehran, according to Khalil Saei, local Crisis Committee chief, the TV report said. The second quake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck 11 minutes later, the U.S.G.S. reported. Its epicenter was 29 miles (48 kilometers) northeast of Tabriz at a depth of 6.1 miles (9.8 kilometers). The quakes hit the towns of Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province, the TV report said. At least six villages were totally leveled, and 60 others sustained damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent, it said.At least 10 aftershocks jolted the same area and were felt in a wide region near the Caspian Sea, causing panic among the population.Saei urged people in the quake region to stay outdoors and spend the night at parks and open spaces in anticipation of more aftershocks. Authorities feared the death toll could rise as rescuers were still trying to reach people trapped under rubble and had not yet reacher some more remote villages.Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experiences at least one earthquake every day on average, although the vast majority are so small they go unnoticed. In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude 6.6 quake that flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam. |

Pietersen commits future to England Posted: England star Kevin Pietersen on Saturday unreservedly committed his future to England, just days after dropping a bombshell by suggesting that the third and final Test against South Africa might be his last.In an interview posted on YouTube Pietersen insisted: I want to commit to all forms of cricket for England, because I love playing cricket for England.Im not going anywhere - I want to commit to all forms of cricket for England because I love playing for England, added Pietersen, who explained he wanted to provide confirmation and clarity regarding his situation.I love being part of a successful England team - we are a successful team, said Pietersen. It would be really sad to end a career like this so sitting down with my family, my advisers and my close friends weve decided and Ive decided that it would be a lot better to finish my career for England on a positive note rather than one thats being developed at the moment. On Monday he had stated: I cant rule out that my next Test may be my last, after winning the man of the match award in the drawn second Test at Headingley after a superb innings of 149, which he followed up by taking three wickets. On Saturday, he made a volte-face, saying he had recognised he realised his love for the international game was too great to let it go and said his earlier comments had been misguided. There was a press conference that I did Monday night which I didnt handle the right way. I was very emotional. I am who I am in terms of shooting from the hip occasionally. I bat like that - I bowled like that last week I do make mistakes. He added that the dressing room mood had been sorted out after a really really good long chat to an unnamed team mate on Friday. We went through everything ... we went through differences, we went through through loads of different things and I actually finished that conversation a very happy bloke and somebody who cannot wait to meet up with team on Tuesday, said Pietersen. He said that Monday I was in an emotional state - I did think that there was a possibility it was my penultimate Test match.I said things I probably shouldnt have said - Im sitting here today clearing things up, said Pietersen, saying he was returning unconditionally.I am wanting to play all three forms of cricket for England again.I want to make myself available for every single form of cricket for England. He added that he had had support from his marvellous franchise Delhi Daredevils, who had been understanding in recognising he would not play the whole Indian Premier League season. |
Bolt leads Jamaica to 4x100m relay world record Posted: Usain Bolt cemented his place in Olympic folklore by claiming a second three-gold medal haul in successive Games as Jamaica stormed to a world record-breaking 4x100m relay victory on Saturday. It was the perfect send-off to a track and field programme at the Olympic Stadium dominated by Bolt, who became the first athlete in history to successfully defend his Olympic 100 and 200m titles earlier this week. His part in the podium-topping relay team means he has now replicated his treble gold showing in the Beijing Games in 2008.The quartet of Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, double Olympic sprint silver medallist Yohan Blake and Bolt scorched to 36.84sec, beating their previous record of 37.04sec set in the 2011 worlds in Daegu. The United States claimed silver in a national record of 37.04sec, with Trinidad and Tobago taking bronze in 38.12sec after Canada were disqualified. Its always a beautiful thing to end on this note, said Bolt. Last year we did it at the world championships, this year we did it again so for me its wonderful feeling to end on a high note.It was a great championships, Im happy. The team came out and gave it their all. I knew it (a world record) was possible, I wish we could have gone faster but I guess we leave room for improvement.Missing usual anchor man Asafa Powell through injury, the baton was passed from Carter to Jamaican team captain Frater and on to Blake with the ease of accustomed practitioners of the relay.Blake set a blistering pace around the bend, the crowd on their feet as Bolt positioned himself and set off.Taking the baton in his left hand just before the limit of the changeover area, Bolt swiftly transferred the yellow baton to his right hand. The US teams anchor man, Ryan Bailey, was neck-and-neck with Bolt, but the Jamaican dipped his head and pushed through his drive phase. After 20 metres, the head came up as he reached terminal velocity, Bailey by that stage trailing in his towering wake.Bolt flew up the home stretch and flung himself savagely across the line, which he later kissed in celebration, quickly enveloped by his team-mates to the cheers from an adoring public. The London Games are Bolts fourth global championship since 2008 and his record is startling. He has won seven titles in the eight individual events in which he has competed, his one blip coming when he was disqualified from the Daegu world championship 100m final last year after a false start.Bolt, also the world record holder in both the 100 and 200m, was in addition part of the Jamaican relay team that won four golds in that time.Hes a living legend, Lamine Diack, head of athletics world governing body the IAAF, said shortly before the relay.Hes a young man whos brought a great deal to our sport. Hes an extraordinary talent. Hes excellent for our sport. Were delighted we have him and we support him all the way. |
Germany win 2nd straight Olympic hockey gold Posted: Germany successfully defended its Olympic mens field hockey title by beating the Netherlands 2-1 on Saturday, ruining hopes of a Dutch golden double.Jan Philipp Rabente scored two remarkable goals, a brilliant solo opener in the 33rd minute and the winner after running around behind the net with five minutes to go.Mink van der Weerden equalized for the Dutch in the 53rd with his tournament-best eighth goal. The Dutch had hoped to pull off the first Olympic double after their women beat Argentina 2-0 on Friday.Instead, the German men emulated the Dutch women: Both repeated as champions. The Germans fourth gold left them only in the shade of India, the eight-time champs.Coach Markus Weise earned his third successive gold after leading the Germany women in 2004 and the men in Beijing and here. The Dutch should have finished off the final by halftime. Germany goalkeeper Max Weinhold was the chief reason they didnt. He was called upon within minutes, with saves off Rogier Hofman, and stuck out his left knee to dismiss a backhand shot by Billy Bakker. When the Netherlands had the only penalty corner of the half in the 29th, Philipp Zeller blocked German marskman Moritz Fuerstes initial flick and Weinhold killed Robbert Kempermans rebound attempt.Weinhold wasnt impressed when, after tackling Dutch captain Floris Evers, Evers gave him a parting push of his head. But his mood improved three minutes later, two minutes before the break, when midfielder Rabente ran around Sander Baart into the circle, ran away from Robert van der Horst and slashed a goal between two defenders and past goalie Jaap Stockmann. The Dutch couldnt take their chances after the break either. Roderick Weusthofs pass to Valentin Verga went through his legs, and Wouter Jolie was blocked.Chris Zeller almost made it 2-0 when he hit the right post with a rasping shot.Van der Weerden finally scored, after his first penalty corner was blocked by Martin Haener. With his second chance, he scored from a rocket that sent Germany captain Max Mueller ducking for cover on the goal-line.Germany earned its first penalty corner soon after in the 56th but Stockmann saved Haener with his glove. Stockmann then saved from Thilo Stralkowski and Jolie, but Van der Weerden then conceded a penalty corner to the Germans, only for Zeller to hit the back of Jolie. With five minutes to go, Rabente shot and thought hed scored, and kept running around behind the net from the left side. But Stockmann stopped the shot and the ball was cleared, only for Tobias Hauke to fire it back in. Benjamin Wess gave it a nudge back toward the goal and Rabente came around from behind the goal on the right post to steer it in. |

Right now I cant feel anything, but Im amazed, said the 26-year-old champion.Semenya accepted that she had not run the greatest tactical race of her life -- she was last going down the back straight. We all make mistakes, hopefully the next race will be better, said Semenya. It was a good race, I am happy with the result. I left it a bit late, but I am happy with the silver. But my coach (former Olympic champion Maria Mutola) is not really happy but Savinova is a good athlete, a good competitor.I just need to train harder. I must let the (Russians) know Im there.Kenyas defending champion Pamela Jelimo had taken the pace up 300 metres out but was overwhelmed by Savinovas burst and the 22-year-old was passed by Semenya and edged out on the line by Poistogova.I knew the Russians were very strong, said Jelimo. What can you do? You have to accept that sometimes you are at the top and sometimes you are not.My body did not stick to the task, but for me its the best I can do.For Semenya it was a second successive silver medal at a major championships - she was second in last years world championship - after being cleared to return after a traumatic time following her world championship win in 2009.Semenya had to undergo drug tests followed by gender tests following that magnificent victory in Berlin. |
