Smoking kills one million Chinese every year: study

Posted:

A new study says China has the largest number of tobacco users in the world. And analysts say efforts to curb the habit are being hindered by the countrys state-owned tobacco enterprises. The British-based medical journal Lancet said Friday in a report on global smoking rates that around 300 million people, about 28 percent of the population, use tobacco products in China, despite new restrictions on public smoking. The studys lead author, Dr. Gary Giovino, says Chinas government-owned cigarette companies, an important source of revenue, are even encouraging the deadly habit with advertisements in elementary schools.“The China National Tobacco Company has supported elementary schools in China, dozens and dozens of them. And they use their support to promote propaganda about tobacco use, and they are basically telling students that genius comes from hard work and tobacco helps them to be successful. That to me is mind boggling, that a government would tell its children to use tobacco to be successful when tobacco will addict them and shorten their lives.”China has taken some recent steps to lessen public tobacco use, banning smoking in restaurants, bars, and other outdoor venues. But Angela Merriam of the Beijing-based China Policy organization says the new smoking ban is not being consistently enforced.“The ban on smoking in public spaces is completely ineffective. For example, I have a student who did an informal survey of just over 60 establishments in China. Of those polled, almost 70 percent said they permit smoking. And while 80 percent had heard of the regulations, only 12 percent of people in the restaurants had heard of a fine for a violation of the regulation.”Other say that any substantial progress will be difficult as long as the same authorities responsible for controlling tobacco use are also in charge of tobacco production.Bruce Jacobs, a China analyst at Monash University in Australia, says part of the problem is that health advocacy groups in China are being marginalized by the countrys big tobacco companies.“A lot of the tobacco growing and the manufacturing of cigarettes in China is done by big state-owned corporations, and they bring in money. (So) the health organizations dont have as much clout as these big economic organizations.”The Lancet study said that tobacco use around the world is greatly influenced by the pro-tobacco lobby. The World Health Organization estimates that six million people worldwide die annually of tobacco-related illnesses. At least one million of those deaths occur in China.

Turkey crosses Syria border to aid displaced

Posted:

Turkish authorities crossed the Syrian border Sunday to distribute humanitarian aid to Syrians who have been forced from their homes and are massed at the border, emergency officials said. The authorities gave out food and other supplies on Syrian soil, just across the border from the southern Turkish town of Reyhanli, in a region where hundreds of displaced Syrians are waiting to enter Turkey, officials told Turkish news agency Anatolia.Syrians who flee their homes to escape fighting between President Bashar al-Assads forces and anti-regime rebels often face hours or even days of waiting in the no mans land border region to be processed and admitted into Turkey.Their numbers increased sharply last week as regime forces pounded the northern city of Aleppo, about 70 kilometres (45 miles) from Reyhanli, with shells, air raids and sniper fire. Some 1,000 Syrian refugees, including army officers and soldiers, have arrived in Turkey in the past 24 hours. Turkey is now harboring some 70,000 refugees in all, according to officials.Authorities handed out baby food, sleeping bags and sanitation supplies to those waiting at the border. The Turkish Red Crescent has opened four centres at the border to accept donations from locals.

Afghan in uniform kills NATO soldier: ISAF

Posted:

An Afghan in police uniform shot and killed a NATO soldier in southern Afghanistan Sunday, the military said -- taking the death toll from insider attacks this year to 40.An International Security Assistance Force service member died when an individual wearing an Afghan Uniformed Police uniform turned his weapon against ISAF service members in southern Afghanistan today, ISAF said.Afghan and ISAF officials were investigating the incident, a statement said without giving further details or specifying the soldiers nationality.A spike in so-called green-on-blue attacks is causing growing concern in the United States and among its NATO allies fighting the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan. The latest death takes the toll among international coalition soldiers from such incidents to 10 in less than two weeks, sharply eroding trust between foreign troops and the Afghans they work with. Two American soldiers were killed last Friday, a week after six were killed in a single day on August 10. Another NATO soldier was killed three days earlier. Some of the attacks are claimed by the Taliban, who say they have infiltrated the ranks of Afghan security forces, but many are attributed to cultural differences and antagonism between local and US-led allied forces. In a sign of US concern, Pentagon chief Leon Panetta called Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday, urging him to crack down on the attacks. The pair agreed that American and Afghan officials should work even more closely together to minimise the potential for insider attacks in the future, the Pentagon said.Measures should include improved intelligence and more rigorous vetting of Afghan recruits, a statement said. The growing number of attacks will likely add to pressure in NATO nations for an exit as soon as possible from the increasingly unpopular war, now nearly 11 years old.

Federer beats Djokovic for 5th Cincinnati title

Posted:

Top-ranked Roger Federer won a record fifth Cincinnati title Sunday, dominating second-ranked Novak Djokovic from the outset of a 6-0, 7-6 (7) win for the Western & Southern Open championship. It was the first time in the tournaments history that the top two played for the title. From the start, it was no match.Federer improved to 5-0 in Cincinnati finals and tied Rafael Nadal for the most Masters titles with 21. Nadal dropped out of the tournament with a sore knee that has sidelined him indefinitely.A record break always something special when that happens, Federer said.Djokovic won the Rogers Cup in Toronto last Sunday and was trying for his first win in Cincinnati, where he reached the finals last year but had to quit the title match against Andy Murray because of a sore shoulder. He seemed to be running on fumes in his second final in two weeks.I had a fantastic week in Toronto, Djokovic said. I came in here and didnt really expect to get this far, get all the way to the title.By contrast, the 31-year-old Swiss star skipped the Rogers Cup, leaving him fresher Sunday.Federer and Djokovic rarely have such lopsided days together. The Swiss star won the first set in only 20 minutes, allowing Djokovic just 10 points. It was the first time in their 28 career matches that one of them took a set 6-0.The Serb never fully recovered, snapping his streak of 15 straight wins on hard courts.I made a lot of double-faults, Djokovic said. I was just trying to win that first game and get things moving. It was the seventh time that theyd played for a tournament title. They split the previous six, with Federer winning the only Grand Slam championship match among them the U.S. Open in 2007.Their rivalry took an interesting turn last year. Djokovic beat Federer in a five-set semifinal at the U.S. Open, then beat him again in the semis at Rome and the French Open this year. Federer regained the upper hand by defeating the Serb in the semifinals again at Wimbledon last month. Both reached the final in a dominating style neither lost their serve or a set during the week. Federer held his 38 service games, facing only three break points. Djokovic held serve for 31 games, overcoming 10 break points.Federer put an end to that right away.Helped by a double-fault, Federer broke Djokovics serve to start the match. Then, helped by two more double-faults, he broke him again to go up 3-0. Djokovic went to his chair at the break and grabbed a different racket, hoping to change the flow of the match.Made no difference whatsoever. Federer went back on court and served back-to-back aces that Djokovic couldnt touch with that new racket. It was domination all around Djokovic had 10 unforced errors in the opening set, the same number of points he won. The Serb had four double-faults, each one setting up a break point or ending a game. The fans gave Djokovic a loud ovation when he held serve to open the second set. The Serb looked up at the crowd and smiled while sipping water.Djokovic showed more energy in the second set but never put much pressure on Federer, who didnt face a break point. After a forehand sailed way long, Djokovic raised his arms, reared back and screamed. Now fully engaged in the match, he took the second set to a tiebreaker.Djokovic survived one match point and got one point away from taking the tiebreaker. Federer ran off the last three points, closing it out with a forehand.

Philander's twin strikes leaves England reeling

Posted:

England was left reeling at 16-2 by Vernon Philanders twin strikes Sunday after being set a daunting target of 346 to win the third match against South Africa and retain its No. 1 test ranking.Philander trapped both openers lbw in the 13 overs left on the fourth day after South Africa was bowled out for 351 at Lords.Philander claimed 2-4 after also making 35 useful runs for the Proteas, for whom Hashim Amla hit an elegant 121 before Steven Finn took 4-74 to give the hosts a slender chance. It was fantastic to get two big wickets and thats put us in a very good position, Amla said. But we do realize theres a lot of hard work to do, its a good wicket to bat on. Any score above 300 is a big ask, weve been in that situation before. In fact, any score above 250 is a big ask on a wicket thats going to deteriorate.Finn insisted England wouldnt play for a draw.We want to win tomorrow and we believe we can win tomorrow, he said. Were going to get a ball thats 15 overs old to bat with, which obviously isnt going to do as much as a new ball, and weve got an opportunity to assert ourselves on the South Africans early.England will have to surpass its highest successful run chase of 332 to level the three-match series at 1-1 and hold off South Africas surge to the top of the test rankings. That was achieved in in 1928 against Australia. The only wicket to fall in a one-sided morning session was nightwatchman Dale Steyn, who was removed by Stuart Broad after batting for 42 minutes Sunday to frustrate England. After South Africa resumed on 145-3, Steyn was hit on the left hand as he tried to fend off a bouncer from Finn in the first over of the morning.Steyn was eventually out for 9, caught at short leg by James Taylor, after a partnership of 33 with Amla. But the hosts then missed a huge chance in the 62nd over.Having hit his first two deliveries for four, AB de Villiers was on 8 when he was bamboozled by Graeme Swann, chipping him to midwicket.Anderson, falling forward, somehow failed to hold the catch and the feeling that England had just dropped the mace the trophy held by the worlds top-ranked test side set in.Wicketkeeper Matt Prior had already dropped Amla, then on 2, on Saturday night. The batting pair had put on an unbroken stand of 52 by lunch.Amla cut Jonathan Trott for four to bring up his century in the 78th over but, with the game drifting away from England, Finn produced an unplayable delivery that crashed into Amlas off stump in the 89th.England used its final referral after umpire Kumar Dharmasena ruled de Villiers was not out lbw to Anderson in the next over. However, replays showed the ball would have clipped the bails by less than the margin needed to overturn the call.In the next over, de Villiers edged Finn to Strauss for 43.It was Strausss 121st catch in test cricket, an England record, but the captain then missed a difficult one-handed chance to snare JP Duminy off Swann. It was Englands ninth dropped catch of the series but the hosts shrugged off the blow, with Finn having Jacques Rudolph caught behind for 11 in the 97th.At tea, England still had realistic hopes of victory, but these grew increasingly distant as Duminy and Philander put on 54 for the eighth wicket.Philander eventually departed when he cut a long hop from Anderson to Jonny Bairstow at point.Morne Morkel successfully referred umpire Simon Taufels decision to give him caught behind to a ball that actually hit the grill of his helmet, but after lifting his back foot for a split second he was given out stumped off Swann by the third umpire for 9.Anderson concluded the innings when he bowled Imran Tahir for 1, leaving Duminy on 26 not out.But Englands chase got off to a disastrous start when Philander had Alastair Cook lbw for 3 with the eighth ball.Strauss fell in Philanders next over, lbw without offering a shot for 1 and from this position England will do well to save the test, let alone win it.

Queen's corgis 'attack' Princess Beatrice's terrier Max

Posted:

Max, an 11 year-old Norfolk terrier, was claimed to have been badly injured after the “nasty” fight with Her Majesty’s six dogs last week. The Princess’s beloved pet nearly lost an ear and suffered several bloody bite injuries, which later treated by a vet located near to the Scottish royal residence. The Queen was elsewhere in the castle when the fight erupted between the corgis and the three Norfolk terriers belonging to the Duke of York’s family. The Monarch’s dog walker was leading the dogs through one of the castle’ corridors when the group became “over-excited”.They were being taken for a walk on the estate when they began “fighting among themselves”.The Queen and the Duke, who was also in another part of the castle, were said to be “very upset” about the incident, which reportedly occurred last Sunday. It is comes a few days after Prince Beatrice, who has since travelled to Balmoral, lost another of her Norfolk terriers, Millie, who died from natural causes.Royal sources today described the incident as “really nasty”.The Queens dog boy was taking the corgis for a walk and they were joined by the Norfolk terriers which came with Prince Andrew,” one insider told the Sunday Express. They were being taken along the long corridor leading to the Tower Door before being let into the grounds for a walk, and they all became overexcited. They began fighting among themselves and unfortunately the dog boy lost control.”They added: “The next thing we knew there were horrific yelps and screams and it seems the corgis picked on Max.“He was very badly injured and had to be taken to the local vet. There was blood everywhere. The Queen and the Duke were very upset when they were told but the dog is really Beatrices and she wasnt there either. She later came up to Scotland and has been looking after Max.”He was very lucky to survive. I heard the Princess was very upset because another of her Norfolk terriers, Millie, died from natural causes just a week or so before.”Max, one of two Norfolk terriers owned by the family, has been the most treasured possession of Princess Beatrice, 24, who is fifth in line to the throne, since she received him for Christmas when she was 13.The dog featured on the familys 2005 Christmas card in a photograph taken by the Duchess of York. He was also emblazoned on a £450 handbag, which she carried to the Royal Familys Easter service at St Georges Chapel in 2004.Max disappeared in December 2008 from the family home in Windsor Great Park, and a search party was launched which included the Queen, Duchess of York and Princess Eugenie. Three weeks later he was found bedraggled and hungry. The royal source added to the newspaper: Its a bit ironic that the Queen was very worried about Max and helped in the search for him, but now her own dogs have attacked him.At present the Queen owns three Pembroke Welsh corgis called Monty, Willow and Holly, who are all descended from Susan.Over time some Corgis were mated with dachshunds, mostly notably Pipkin, who belonged to Princess Margaret, to create “Dorgis”. Her three Dorgis are called Cider, Candy and Vulcan.
