Cheaters get 'high' from breaking the rules: study

Posted:

Forget about the notion of a guilty conscience. Cheating actually feels good, according to a new study.Breaking the rules dishonestly doesnt result in a guilty feeling. Instead, it gives people what researchers call a “cheaters high,” according to a recent paper by researchers at the University of Washington, London Business School, Harvard University and the University ofPennsylvania. The report, which includes five studies, shows that cheaters tend to perceive the overall experience as a positive one.The findings may shed some light on the motives behind a series of financial scandals that most simply result from some form of cheating. As the New York Times noted last month, JPMorgan’s London Whale trading loss, the Libor manipulation scandal and the collapse of Peregrine Financial Group all allegedly involve rule breaking.Thats to say nothing of Bernie Madoff, who ran the biggest Ponzi scheme to in U.S. history, cheating investors out of $65 billion before pleading guilty in March 2009.“Our documented pattern of results helps to explain otherwise puzzling unethical behavior, such as the finding that people often cheat even for trivial sums of money,” the researchers wrote in the report.Indeed, the paper finds that cheaters, even when suspected, felt better and smarter than non-cheaters. Furthermore, when subjects benefitted from somebody else cheating on their behalf, they likewise felt more positive than those who didn’t get such benefits.

Americas Allyson Felix made it third time lucky to win the Olympic 200m crown here Wednesday and deny Jamaicas Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce a sprint double.Felix, a silver medallist at the 2004 and 2008 Games over the distance, powered to victory in 21.88sec to thwart Fraser-Pryces hopes of adding the 200m title to her newly acquired 100m crown. Finally, it has been a long time coming, a delighted Felix said. Ive waited so long for this moment and I am just overjoyed. There are so many people I lover here tonight and I am just overjoyed to share it with them, the 26-year-old from Los Angeles added.Fraser-Pryce took silver in 22.09sec with Carmelita Jeter of the United States winning bronze in 22.14sec.Jamaicas Veronica Campbell-Brown -- chasing a historic third consecutive Olympic 200m gold after pipping Felix at the two previous games -- was fourth in a time of 22.38sec.Felix looked smooth throughout, coming off the bend with a significant lead and holding her nerve in the home stretch to win a long-overdue first gold.Felix is a three-time world champion over 200m but could only manage bronze at last years world championships in Daegu, South Korea. But she came into the Olympics in top form having clocked the fastest time in the world this year, running 21.69 seconds at the US Olympic trials.Americas Sanya Richards-Ross, aiming to complete a rare 200m-400m double in London after winning the 400m earlier in the Games, finished fifth in 22.39sec.Felixs victory is Americas first gold in the event since 1992, when Gwen Torrence won in Barcelona and is a rare recent success in the battle against sprinting powerhouse Jamaica. The United States, formerly the undisputed kings of sprinting, have been forced to watch as the Caribbean island of Jamaica have stolen their mantle. The Jamaicans dominated in Beijing in 2008, winning all four individual sprint races and the mens 4x100m relay and Usain Bolt has already taken gold in the mens 100m in London.

Olympics: Bolt edges closer to sprint history

Posted:

Usain Bolt moved to within one win of an unprecedented second successive Olympic sprint double here on Wednesday as he won his 200m semi-final in impressive fashion. The 25-year-old - who retained his 100 metres crown in on Sunday - would better American legend Carl Lewiss record of three golds and a silver in the 1984 and 1988 Games.Bolt never had to move out of first gear in his semi-final winning easily in 20.18sec ahead of young South African Anaso Jobodwana. The aim was all about just getting through, said Bolt, who has said he will only be happy being called a legend if he wins the 200m title.I wanted to run the corner so I really pushed myself in the first 70 metres and then I tried to take it easier.Bolt said that the final could well see his world record of 19.19sec tumble. Its a possibility, definitely. I cant say but the track is fast, its going to be a good race. There are going to be a lot of great competitors so Im looking forward to it.His main danger will come from compatriot and training partner Yohan Blake, who took silver in the 100 metres, as the man nicknamed the Beast also won his semi-final with ease.Blake eased up long before the line having done the hard work on the bend to time 20.01sec, the fastest time of the three semis. The 22-year-old Jamaican insisted he could deny Bolt the title, the one the champion considers his favourite event, and that it may require a world record to do so.I think I gave away the 100 because I tied up a bit but I think in the 200m anything is possible, said the 22-year-old.American veteran Wallace Spearmon, who was disqualified from bronze four years ago for treading in another lane, held off the charge of Frances world bronze medalist Christophe Lemaitre to take the second automatic qualifying spot.Lemaitre, European champion in the event in 2010, reached the final as one of the two fastest losers.Lemaitres successor as European champion, Churandy Martina of the Netherlands, won the third semi-final and could be a dark horse for a medal.Like Spearmon, Martina will be looking for redemption as he was disqualified from second place in the Beijing final for a similar offence.

Olympics: China sweeps table tennis board again

China completed a second consecutive Olympic clean sweep of all four table tennis gold medals when they overwhelmed South Korea 3-0 in the mens team final on Wednesday.Despite a tweak to the table tennis entry rules which limited the number of Chinese players in the draws for the various Olympic tournaments, results in London have mirrored the rout in Beijing four years ago.Olympic champion Zhang Jike won the outstanding contest in the second match of a final played before an enthusiastic full house, the majority of whom were Chinese supporters.Zhang downed Joo Sae-Hyuk 11-9, 5-11, 11-6, 11-6 with a masterful display which mixed fierce fast-looped attacks and sudden changes of direction.Earlier Ma Long, the world number two, was too sharp for Ryu Seung-Min, who was the Olympic champion in Athens eight years ago, also winning in four games. The winning lead was completed by a straight games win in the doubles by Zhang and Wang Hao, the Olympic silver medallist, against Ryu and Oh Sang-eun.Wang made the winning hit to capture the gold medal, offering some compensation for having won the silver medal for a third Olympics in a row.Zhang said China had not expected to clinch a second sweep of the medals.I am happy not only because its my first Olympics but because the team event exceeded our expectations, Zhang said through an interpreter.Meanwhile, Wang Hao praised the support from fans inside the Excel and back home in China. There are only three people playing and there are millions of people supporting us, and its appreciated, he said. It feels very emotional to win it in this atmosphere.Earlier Germany won the bronze medal with a 3-1 win over Hong Kong, the winning point being struck by former world number one Timo Boll, with a 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9 success against Jiang Tianyi, the world number 20.Boll had earlier beaten Zhang Jike in the team semi-finals. But now he is talking of starting a family and reducing the amount he competes.Germany head coach Jorg Rosskopf said Bolls win showed the Chinese could be beaten when the next games roll around in 2016.We have shown that we can beat Chinese players, Rosskopf said.

Iraqi officials say car bomb kills 11

Posted:

A car bomb killed 11 people when it exploded shortly after sunset Wednesday near a gathering of Shiite Muslims south of Baghdad, Iraqi officials said, the latest apparent sectarian attack in the increasingly troubled country.Police and hospital officials said the bomb went off close to a tent where people were gathered for a religious ceremony near the town of Suwayrah, 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the Iraqi capital. They said 40 people were wounded in the blast.Violence has declined in Iraq since its height between 2005 and 2008, but attacks continue almost daily. There has been a steady increase since U.S. troops completed their withdrawal last December. Al-Qaida has declared its intention to take back areas from which the U.S. and its local allies expelled the militants. The bomb went off Wednesday just after iftar, the ceremonial breaking of the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan, when families and friends gather for a festive meal.Khalil Ali, a nearby resident, said he was about to leave his house after finishing his iftar meal when he heard a big explosion.Everybody rushed to the blast area. I saw the tent on fire and bodies ... scattered all over the place. The scene was horrific, he said.Nobody here expected an attack like this. The security measures were light because we thought that our area is safe and free of violence. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Attacks on Shiites are often attributed to al-Qaidas local wing in Iraq. The blast brought to at least 19 the number of people killed in Iraq on Wednesday.Hours earlier, gunmen shot dead eight members of a family inside their house north of Baghdad.

At least 162 killed across Syria: NGO

Posted:

The Syrian army launched an all-out assault on Aleppos southwestern district of Salaheddin on Wednesday, and fierce fighting also broke out elsewhere in the northern city.At least 37 people -- 17 civilians, 10 rebels and 10 soldiers -- were killed in the northern city, out of a total of at least 162 people killed across the country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said it was difficult, because of the ferocity of the clashes, to immediately document the number of people killed in commercial capital Aleppo, and added that the real number would be higher. The Britain-based watchdog said that of those killed across Syria, 94 were civilians, 41 were regime troops and 27 were rebels.Among the dead were a woman and her two children killed when a shell hit their house in Aleppos Al-Mashatiyah neighbourhood, said the watchdog. The Qatarji, Tariq al-Bab and Shaar neighbourhoods also came under heavy shellfire, it said.Elsewhere, seven people were killed in the central province of Homs, including a nurse who died when troops shelled the village of Zaafarana. But the province that suffered the highest death toll was Deir Ezzor in the east, whose eponymous capital has suffered heavy shelling for almost two months, activists say.The Observatory said 225 people were killed across the country on Tuesday, one of the highest tolls in the nearly 17-month revolt -- 129 civilians, 50 rebels and 46 soldiers. It is impossible to verify these figures, and the United Nations has stopped maintaining an independent toll.

Mars crater where rover landed looks 'Earth-like'

Posted:

The ancient Martian crater where the Curiosity rover landed looks strikingly similar to Californias Mojave Desert with its looming mountains and hanging haze, scientists said Wednesday. The first impression that you get is how Earth-like this seems looking at that landscape, said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology.Overnight, the car-size rover poked its head out for the first time since settling in Gale Crater, peered around and returned a flood of black-and-white pictures that will be stitched into a panorama. It provided the best view so far of its destination since touching down Sunday night after nailing an intricate choreography. During the last few seconds, a rocket-powered spacecraft hovered as cables lowered Curiosity to the ground. In the latest photos, Curiosity looked out toward the northern horizon. Nearby were scour marks in the surface blasted by thrusters, which kicked up a swirl of dust. There were concerns that Curiosity got dusty, but scientists said that was not the case.We do see a thin coating of dust, but nothing too bad, said Justin Maki, imaging scientist at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $2.5 billion mission.Scientists were giddy about the trenches because it meant Curiosity could drive up to them and start collecting samples once the science phase of the mission gets under way.Since landing, Curiosity has zipped home a stream of low-resolution pictures taken by tiny cameras under the chassis and a camera at the end of its robotic arm, which remained stowed. It also sent back a low-quality video glimpsing the last 2 1/2 minutes of its descent. The rover successfully raised its mast packed with high-resolution and navigation cameras. With the mast up, it can begin its shutterbug days in force including taking a 360-degree color view of its surroundings as early as Thursday.Grotzinger said he was struck by the Martian landscape, which appeared diverse. There seemed to be harder bedrock underneath the gravelly surface, he said.It kind of makes you feel at home, he said. Were looking at a place that feels really comfortable.Mars, of course, is very different from Earth. Its a frigid desert constantly bombarded by radiation. There are geological signs that it was a warmer and wetter place once upon a time. One of the missions goals is to figure out how Mars transformed. After sailing eight months and 352 million miles (566 million kilometers), Curiosity parked its six wheels near the Martian equator where it will spend the next two years poking into rocks and soil in search of the chemical ingredients of life. The $2.5 billion mission is the most ambitious and expensive yet to Mars. Its ultimate destination is a mountain towering from the center of the crater floor. Preliminary estimates indicate Curiosity landed four miles (6.5 million kilometers) away from the base of Mount Sharp, thought to contain intriguing signs of past water a starting point to learning whether microbial life could exist. Before the one-ton, nuclear-powered Curiosity can start roving, it has to undergo several weeks of tedious but essential health checks.Since it was too heavy to land using traditional air bags, it used a heat shield, parachute, rockets and cables. An orbiting spacecraft spotted the discarded spacecraft hardware, including the ballast weights that were shed soon after atmosphere entry.
