Cabinet approves ‘fair trial’ bill

12 swept away in AJK by flash flood

MUZAFFARABAD, Sept 5: At least 12 villagers, women and children among them, were swept away by flash floods in the village of Machiara triggered by heavy rain on Wednesday.

Only five bodies had been found till late in the evening. Officials said that most of the victims had been collecting firewood which water channels usually carried after heavy rains.

Militants become active at behest of agency, NA told

ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: A strong denunciation of militancy in Pakistan opened a law-and-order debate in the National Assembly on Wednesday, with one opposition party leader tracing the origin of the menace to “within the governmental structure”.

There were also calls for sectarian harmony in the country amid opposition charges of the government following a US-led international agenda in the so-called war against terrorism while ignoring decisions of its own parliament.

Dual office: LHC issues fresh notice to Zardari

LAHORE, Sept 5: The Lahore High Court issued on Wednesday a fresh notice to President Asif Ali Zardari through his principal secretary and sought a reply to a petition pleading contempt proceedings against him for not abiding a court order to relinquish the political office of PPP co-chairman.

Additional Deputy Attorney General Abdul Hayee Gilani informed a larger bench that Attorney General Irfan Qadir was to appear in the proceedings in response to an earlier notice issued to him. But he could not attend the hearing because he had been summoned by the Supreme Court at the Quetta registry and, therefore, the proceedings should be adjourned.

Trilateral talks on safe passage for Taliban willing to join peace process

ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: Pakistan, Afghanistan and the US started talks on Wednesday on modalities of providing safe passage to the Taliban willing to join reconciliation talks.

At the inaugural session the three sides reiterated their commitment to peace and vowed to remain engaged on the issue of safe passage.

SC wants Malik to personally answer contempt charges

ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: The Supreme Court ordered Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Wednesday to appear before it in person to answer contempt charges against him for interfering in judicial affairs.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk warned that the court would issue arrest warrants if the minister again failed to show up at the next hearing.

OGDC discovers oil, gas reserves

ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: The state-run Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) on Wednesday announced discovery of new reserves in Karak district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which would boost its daily oil output by about 8 per cent.

A company spokesman said the Nashpa-3 well located in Karak district initially produced 3,165 barrels per day (bpd) of oil and about 15 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas, boosting the total production in the Nashpa region to about 11,165bpd of oil and 43mmcfd of gas. The total oil production of the company would now increase to about 44,610bpd or 64 per cent of the country’s total oil output while gas output would go up to approximately 1,030mmcfd.

Peshawar attack: US says FBI leading probe

WASHINGTON, Sept 5: The US State Department has confirmed that the FBI is leading the probe into a suicide car bomb attack on an American diplomatic car in Peshawar that killed two people.

“The US Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading that investigation,” the State Department’s deputy spokesman Patrick Ventrell told a news briefing in Washington, while noting that so far no one had claimed responsibility for the attack.

No property occupied by political workers: EOBI

ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: The Employees Old-age Benefits Institution (EOBI) has said that none of its properties, buildings or open plots have ever been occupied by workers of any political party anywhere in the country.

In its reaction to a story based on proceedings of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and published in this newspaper on Wednesday, the EOBI said all its properties were “protected and secured by proper security guards”.

Suddle begins spadework in Arsalan case probe

ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: Beginning spadework in Arsalan Iftikhar-Malik Riaz case, Federal Tax Ombudsman Dr Shoaib Suddle has held consultations with some legal experts, according to sources.

“Dr Suddle returned to the country yesterday (Tuesday) and the same day he held meetings with the experts in his office to formulate guidelines for the investigations to be completed within 30 days, as instructed by Supreme Court,” a source told Dawn on Wednesday.

Osama book not to harm ties: US

WASHINGTON, Sept 5: The Pentagon has said that a book by a US Navy SEAL who participated in the Abbottabad raid contains sensitive classified material but it will not harm America’s relations with Pakistan.

“Sensitive and classified information is contained in the book,” chief Pentagon spokesman George Little told a news briefing in Washington.

Suicide attack bid foiled

TIMERGARA, Sept 5: Police personnel and members of a local Lashkar foiled an attempt to carry out a suicide attack in Lower Dir on Wednesday.

A man wearing a suicide vest was killed in an explosion near a police station, sources said. There was no other casualty in the incident.

Afghans sign deal with Iranians for access to port

KABUL, Sept 5: The Afghan government has signed an agreement with Iran that gives land-locked Afghanistan access to a key seaport in the neighbouring country.

Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rasool and Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi inked the deal in Kabul on Wednesday.
