14 killed in Parachinar sectarian attack

PARACHINAR, Sept 10: A car bomb ripped through a crowded market at the busy Kashmir Chowk of Parachinar, the headquarters of Kurram Agency, killing 14 people and injuring 76 others in what appears to be a sectarian attack.

Struggle for revival of democratic order not over: CJ

ISLAMABAD, Sept 10: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry said on Monday that the struggle for restoration of the judiciary or revival of the democratic order was not over.

“It is a means to achieve the end like the supremacy of the Constitution and rule of law — a sine qua non for attainment of the objectives for which any welfare state exists,” the chief justice said at a ceremony held at the Supreme Court building to mark the beginning of the new judicial year.

Floods triggered by downpour wreak widespread devastation

KARACHI, Sept 10: Flash floods triggered by heavy rains caused widespread destruction across vast swathes of the country on Monday, breaking a 24-year rainfall record and leaving over 100 people dead in upper Sindh, wreaking devastation in Punjab’s Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur areas and leaving five districts of eastern Balochistan cut off from the rest of the country.

In Sindh, over 100 people were reported dead and scores of others injured as rains and flooding destroyed thousands of houses, rendering a large number of families homeless. Some of them have taken shelter at railway stations.

Lal Masjid chief cleric acquitted in Rangers murder case

RAWALPINDI, Sept 10: An anti-terrorism court acquitted on Monday the chief cleric of Lal Masjid, Maulana Abdul Aziz, and 19 others in a case relating to the murder of a Rangers official.

ATC Judge Chaudhry Habibur Rehman acquitted the chief cleric, his wife Majida Aziz alias Umme Hassan, his sister-in-law Humaira Rasheed Ghazi, daughter Tayyaba Dua, Maulana Abdul Qayyum, Mohammad Afzal, Nazakat Ali, Fidaullah, Mufti Sadiq, Inayatur Rehman, Riaz Ahmed, Mohammad Hayat, Safiullah, Noor Mohammad, Mohammad Asif, Abdul Latif, Ansar Shah, Safdarullah, Mohammad Usman and Maqsood Akbar, giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Anger in NA over UN missing persons probe

ISLAMABAD, Sept 10: While a junior federal minister was furious in the National Assembly on Monday over the visit to Pakistan of a UN team to collect data about the so-called missing persons, a senior cabinet member agreed to have a debate in the house over this “matter of national security”.

But there was no immediate government response a senior opposition lawmaker had sought over information given to the house Public Accounts Committee on Friday that the army had recalled three retired generals to active service to face an inquiry by itself instead of the National Accountability Bureau for the alleged financial corruption in the National Logistics Cell (NLC).

Accords to be signed during Putin’s visit approved

ISLAMABAD, Sept 10: Taking forward the quiet reset in their ties, Pakistan and Russia held on Monday the second meeting of inter-governmental commission (IGC) on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, weeks ahead of a likely visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin for attending a meeting with leaders of Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The IGC, launched in 2010 for promoting bilateral cooperation, in its meeting approved the text of memorandums of understanding that may be signed during Mr Putin’s trip.

‘US not sending message to Pakistan’

WASHINGTON, Sept 10: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Monday that the United States was not trying to send a message to Pakistan by designating the Haqqani network a foreign terrorist organisation.

“It is part of the continuing effort to try to send a message to them — not to anybody else, but to them,” Secretary Clinton told Bloomberg News when asked if the move aimed at sending a message to Pakistan that they’re not doing enough against the Haqqanis.

Afridi says he was punished by ISI for supporting US

WASHINGTON, Sept 10: Dr Shakil Afridi, who helped the CIA nail Osama bin Laden, told a US television channel that the ISI considered America Pakistan’s “worst enemy”.

Fox News claimed that its correspondent had conduc-ted the interview in the Peshawar Centre Jail, and quoted Dr Afridi as saying that he suffered “brutal interrogation and torture” when arrested.

Four missing persons found dead

QUETTA, Sept 10: Four bullet-riddled bodies, including that of a sepoy, were found in Kalat and Mashkay areas of Balochistan on Monday.

Levies Force personnel rushed to the Mohammad Toway area in Kalat after they received information about the presence of bodies there, sources said. They took the bodies to the Kalat district hospital.

13 factory workers hurt in blast

QUETTA, Sept 10: At least 13 people, among them two women, were injured in a remote-controlled bomb attack on a bus in the industrial town of Hub on Monday, police said.

A motorcycle rigged with explosives and parked on the roadside near the provincial border with Sindh was blown up when the bus carrying employees of a cement factory was passing through the area.

Australia avert whitewash

DUBAI, Sept 10: Pakistan went from the sublime to the disastrous against Australia on Monday, recording their lowest Twenty20 international total and suffering their heaviest defeat in the shortest form of the game.

Mohammed Hafeez’s side were bowled out for just 74, giving Australia a crushing 94-run win three days after Pakistan had secured the three-match series with victory in a super over following a seven-wicket success in match one.—Reuters
