Devastating fires in factories, 21 burnt alive in Lahore

LAHORE, Sept 11: Twenty-one people burned to death and 14 others suffered multiple injuries after a fire broke out in a shoe-manufacturing unit in Shafeeqabad, on Bund Road, here on Tuesday.

21 burnt alive in Lahore, at least 22 in Karachi

KARACHI, Sept 11: At least 22 workers, among them three women, burned to death and over 20 others were injured when a fire broke out in a garments factory in Site area of the city on Tuesday.

The injured were taken to Civil and Abbasi Shaheed hospitals for treatment of burns injuries and smoke inhalation.

Malik Riaz challenges probe panel

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: Property tycoon Malik Riaz filed on Tuesday a petition in the Supreme Court requesting a review of a ruling which has already come under review on a petition earlier moved by his adversary Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

They are locked in a battle, accusing each other of financial wrongdoings.

Two districts in Balochistan hit by hill torrents

QUETTA, Sept 11: The situation in Nasirabad and Jaffarabad districts which have been affected by flash floods triggered by torrential rains worsened on Tuesday when waters from Dera Bugti and Marri hills hit Pat Feeder Canal, causing a 600-foot breach on its left bank. The breach is posing a serious threat to Dera Murad Jamali town.

The rainwater also wrecked havoc on Jaffarabad district and washed away hundreds of mud-houses in Nasirabad. The death toll in the two districts has gone up and dozens of people had either been killed or are missing.

Quaid’s death anniversary observed

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: The 64th death anniversary of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was observed on Tuesday with reverence and a pledge to follow his golden principles of “unity, faith and discipline”.

Several public and private organisations as well as educational institutions arranged functions to highlight different aspects of the life of Quaid-i-Azam, recalling his vision and indefatigable struggle for a homeland for Muslims of the Subcontinent.

China reiterates support on all issues

TIANJIN (China), Sept 11: China said on Tuesday it fully supported Pakistan on all its regional and international issues.

America’s fight not with Islam, says Obama

WASHINGTON, Sept 11: US President Barack Obama assured the Muslims on Tuesday that America’s war was with terrorists and not with Islam. On the 11th anniversary of the Sept 11 terrorist attacks, President Obama and rival Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also reminded the world that in situations like this the Americans always rose above political considerations and fought together to defeat the enemy.

“I’ve always said that our fight is with Al Qaeda and its affiliates, not with Islam or any other religion,” said President Obama while addressing a remembrance service at the Pentagon.

N-League legislator obstructing probe: ANF

The apex court is seized with the scam which also involves Textiles Minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin and former prime minister’s son Ali Musa Gilani.

UN mission on missing persons meets Khar

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: Amid controversies sparked by the arrival of a delegation of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, the head of the UN team Olivier Frouville said on Tuesday that the mission was neither an investigative nor fact-finding but its mandate was to ‘act as a bridge between the families of missing persons and concerned governments.’

Mr Frouville, Chair-Rapporteur of the Working Group made the observation during a meeting with Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar at the Foreign Office on Tuesday.

Rain system rapidly weakening

LAHORE, Sept 11: The monsoon low pressure is rapidly weakening over Sindh after causing devastating rain for three days and inflicting heavy losses of life and property in the province and adjoining areas of Balochistan and Punjab.

Govt asks Abbottabad panel to submit report in 30 days

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: The government has given 30 days to the Abbottabad Commission to submit its report on the 40-minute US air raid on May 2 last year in which the world’s most wanted man, Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, was killed.

“The Abbottabad Commission shall complete the inquiry and submit its report to the federal government within 30 days commencing from September 12, 2012,” said a notification issued by the law ministry on Tuesday.

President and COAS discuss security issues

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani met President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency on Tuesday and discussed issues pertaining to security of the country.

Presidency’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said “current security situation was discussed at the meeting”, without providing details.

Gen Kayani’s service extension challenged

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: Service extension given to Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has been challenged in the Islamabad High Court.

But Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman has directed the petitioner to satisfy the court about his locus standi (being aggrieved) and to submit copies of relevant documents annexed with the petition and adjourned the hearing.

‘Dr Afridi’s interview concocted’

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: The ISI rubbished as ‘fiction’ on Tuesday a reported interview by a US TV channel of jailed Dr Shakeel Afridi, allegedly involved in tracing Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

“There is no evidence to suggest that Fox News correspondent had interviewed Dr Afridi,” a senior security official said after preliminary investigations.

Jail authorities deny interview

PESHAWAR, Sept 11: Prison authorities in Peshawar have vehemently denied that the convicted physician alleged to have helped the CIA to knock out Osama bin Laden gave an interview to an American news channel.

“No such interview has taken place,” Khalid Abbas, Inspector General of Prison in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, told Dawn on Tuesday. His comments were sought on a purported interview given by Dr Shakil Afridi to Fox News.
