US ambassador killed in Libyan militant attack


BENGHAZI, Sept 12: The US ambassador to Libya and three embassy staff were killed in an attack on the Benghazi consulate and a safe house refuge on Tuesday, stormed by Islamist militants blaming America for a film seen as insulting the Holy Prophet (pbuh).

HUNDREDS SAW HELL ON EARTH: Nation’s worst industrial tragedy swallows at least 258

KARACHI, Sept 12: The enormity of the Karachi garment factory inferno that consumed at least 258 workers, including a number of women, on Tuesday evening unfolded on Wednesday morning, when firefighters tore down an outer wall of the three-storey-plus basement building to take out the bodies, mostly charred beyond recognition.

On Tuesday evening TV channels and news agencies had broken the news with a few deaths and counted fewer than 30 people killed in the blaze till late in the night. However, on Wednesday morning charred bodies came pouring into hospital mortuaries and the reported figure soared to at least 258 deaths, making it the worst such tragedy of the country.

KARACHI: The fire that broke out in a Karachi industrial unit on Tuesday evening died down on Wednesday night but only after killing at least 258 people, including dozens of women and a number of members of same families.

The deadliest incident in the country’s industrial history raised many questions about safety standards and authorities’ role in treating labourers.

Corruption, collusion behind unenforced safety rules

KARACHI: Four inquiry teams have been constituted by different institutions, a suo motu notice has been taken by the Sindh High Court chief justice and directives for ‘stern action’ have been issued by the governor against institutions responsible for the Karachi factory fire that killed at least 258 people on Wednesday, but not a single official has been blamed for negligence or dereliction of duty.

There are several unanswered questions about matters ranging from fire safety regulations, violation of rules, to professional capacity of rescue organisations.

Day of mourning

THE Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Awami National Party, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf and Pakistan Muslim League-F have decided to observe a day of mourning on Thursday for the victims of the fire tragedy and withdrawn their support for a strike in Sindh called by nationalist parties.

Earlier, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had announced three days of mourning.

Ministry denies secret fund for media allegations

ISLAMABAD, Sept 12: The information ministry disputed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday claims made by TV anchors in a petition that the government was using Rs4 billion secret funds to influence the media for its ulterior motive.

A two-judge bench comprising Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain had taken up a joint petition filed by the TV anchors in which the government has been accused of doling out billions of rupees from the ministry’s secret fund to win over media houses and journalists.

Man dies in Quetta bomb explosion

QUETTA, Sept 12: One person was killed and three others were injured in a remote controlled bomb blast in the Sariab area late on Wednesday evening, police sources said.

A cycle rigged with the bomb and parked near Gahi Khan Chowk blew up, injuring four passers-by.

SC grants interim bail to Shahab

ISLAMABAD, Sept 12: Textiles Minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin, declared an absconder by the Anti-Narcotics Force in the ephedrine scandal case, finally won an interim bail from the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk granted him 13-day bail (till Sept 25) on submission of two surety bonds of Rs500,000 each.

NAB’s adviser appointed

ISLAMABAD, Sept 12: Former inspector general of motorway police, Waseem Kausar, has been appointed adviser to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari.

NAB spokesman Zafar Iqbal told Dawn on Wednesday that Mr Kausar, who was experienced in crime prevention and investigation, would assist the NAB chief on investigation matters.

Caretaker govt: Fazl wants all parties consulted

ISLAMABAD, Sept 12: The JUI-F asked the government on Wednesday to hold consultations with all opposition parties on the caretaker set-up and said it would not accept any decision on the matter taken only by the PPP and PML-N.

The working committee of the JUI which met here with Maulana Fazlur Rehman in the chair decided to accelerate mass mobilisation and asked its district organisations to prepare lists of candidates and proposals for seat adjustment with likeminded parties.

Asia-centred approach for prosperity urged

TIANJIN (China), Sept 12: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf asked the countries in the region on Wednesday to adopt an Asia-centred approach and promote intra-regional trade for the prosperity and development of their peoples.

Addressing a session of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, he said regional countries needed to create a macro-framework for direct investment and make corridors for multi-sector investment, particularly in energy.
