Imported sheep being culled after virus, bacteria infection confirmed

KARACHI, Sept 16: Sindh government officials decided on Sunday to cull more than 21,000 imported Australian sheep and the process of killing the animals and burying them started late in the night in Razzakabad area amid tight security. The government took the decision after reports from a second laboratory also confirmed that the animals were diseased.

Prices of petrol and CNG raised

ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: The government increased with immediate effect the prices of three major petroleum products and compressed natural gas by up to 6.82 per cent but reduced the price of diesel by up to 1.5 per cent..

The prices revised on Sunday will remain in place for a week.

Rs2bn package for rain-hit areas of Sindh

SUKKUR, Sept 16: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf announced on Sunday a special package of Rs2 billion for rain-affected areas of Sindh and directed the finance ministry to immediately release the first instalment of Rs710 million to enable the local administration to launch rescue and relief work in the worst-affected districts.

(He also announced approval of similar grants for the flood-affected areas of Southern Punjab and Balochistan, according to APP.)

Six injured as anti-film protesters try to march on US consulate

KARACHI, Sept 16: At least six people protesting against the anti-Islam film were injured when police fired teargas shells and used water canons to stop a procession from marching on the American consulate here on Sunday evening. Three police vans, a bus and a petrol station were torched during violence.

The participants of the march organised by the Imamia Students’ Organisation and Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen managed to reach the consulate on M.T. Khan Road from the Numaish intersection.

Bomb blows up Dir van: 16 killed

TIMERGARA, Sept 16: Sixteen people, among them women and children, were killed and 13 others injured when a remote-controlled bomb ripped through a passenger van here on Sunday.

The bomb planted on a track in the Inzaro Kandao area of the Lower Dir district was detonated when the van stopped to pick up a passenger.

NEW DELHI, Sept 16: India on Sunday said that Google had blocked access in the country to an anti-Islam film which has triggered protests across the Muslim world as it condemned the ‘offensive’ movie..

“Google India has, in compliance with Indian law, blocked access to the offensive material,” foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said.

Indian envoys see govt divided on Pakistan ties

According to the Times of India, National Security Adviser (NSA) Shivshankar Menon briefed Indian diplomats on his take about the deep divide. Mr Menon was quoted by the newspaper as saying that while terrorism from Pakistan was a never-ending affair, India needed to engage with different quarters in Pakistan, even as New Delhi enhanced its own security proactively.

FO describes nuclear proliferation as Khan’s individual act

ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: A Foreign Office spokesman said on Sunday it had been clearly established after a thorough investigation carried out in 2003-04 regarding transfer of nuclear technology that the proliferation activity had been an individual act that did not carry authorisation of any Pakistani government at any stage..

He was replying to a question about a claim by scientist Dr A.Q. Khan that he had transferred the nuclear technology to foreign countries on the orders of the then prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Germany bars entry of Terry Jones

BERLIN, Sept 16: Germany has barred notorious US pastor Terry Jones from entering the country after protests across the Muslim world sparked by an anti-Islam film he supports, according to the interior ministry..

A visit by Jones would be contrary to the “interest in maintaining public order”, a ministry spokesman said on Sunday, referring to plans by a far-right group to invite the Florida pastor to Germany.
