No death squads in Balochistan, govt tells SC

ISLAMABAD: The federal government denied in the Supreme Court on Friday allegations about proxy death squads operating in Balochistan under the supervision of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI).

The denial came in response to a six-point charter submitted to the court on Thursday by estranged Baloch leader and former chief minister Sardar Akhtar Jan Mengal alleging that proxy death squads which operated the way like Al Shams and Al Badar operated (in Bangladesh) were responsible for enforced disappearances and unrest in the province...

Auditor seeks reasons for extraordinary delay in hydel project

LAHORE / ISLAMABAD, Sept 28: The Auditor General has asked Wapda to “hold an inquiry and fix responsibility for five-and-half-year delay in implementation of Neelum-Jhelum hydroelectric project and its cost escalation (Rs190 billion) by 225 per cent that show mismanagement in the project”.

A letter by the Auditor General to the Ministry of Water and Power said submission of no reply within four weeks would be taken as “formal acceptance (of responsibility) by the ministry”...

Gen Dempsey put off visit because of violence
