Security boosted at US sites after Libya attack

Posted:

US embassies across the world ramped up security Thursday following an attack that killed the US ambassador to Libya, as Muslims angry over an anti-Islam film stormed the U.S. mission in Yemen and clashed with police near the American mission in Cairo.President Barack Obama ordered increased security at U.S. sites worldwide after Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed Tuesday in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The Benghazi attack followed the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo after the trailer from an American-made film, Innocence of Islam, went viral on YouTube. Libyan officials said militants used civilians protesting the film as cover for a violent assault timed for the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. As violence continued Thursday, embassies from the Philippines to the Middle East warned Americans to be on guard for more protests, especially on Friday, the main Muslim day of prayer when religious fervor runs high.In Yemen, hundreds of protesters chanting Death to America stormed the U.S. Embassy compound in the capital, Sanaa, and burned the American flag. Yemens president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, quickly apologized to the U.S. for the attack and vowed track down the culprits. In Dhaka, Bangladesh, police stopped a march by about 400 people who burned a U.S. flag several miles (kilometers) from the U.S. Embassy, where higher security was evident. And in Cairo, where protests against the film began, police fired tear gas Thursday at youths who hurled stones about 100 yards (meters) from the U.S. Embassy there.Elsewhere, the U.S. Consulate in Berlin was evacuated briefly Thursday after an employee reported a strange smell from a document. German police swept the building but found no dangerous materials. With tensions still high, most U.S. missions declined to comment on specific security measures, but some changes were visible. In the Philippines, where hundreds of U.S. troops are advising Filipino forces in their fight against al-Qaida-linked insurgents, U.S. diplomats had asked for additional police and patrols for the embassy compound, as well as a nearby residential complex and the consulate in the central city of Cebu, ahead of the 9/11 anniversary.U.S. officials said the heightened security would be maintained indefinitely following the attack in Libya.Guards and Philippine police special forces carrying assault rifles were outside the embassy Thursday, and a pickup truck bearing a machine gun was parked under a tree. Philippine coast guard vessels patrolled nearby Manila Bay. Police patrols were also intensified at other U.S. sites, including the American cemetery in Manila. In Pakistan, where anti-Americanism is widespread due to drone attacks against militants on Pakistani soil, the senior officer in charge of security in the diplomatic enclave in Islamabad said police would step up surveillance in the area, which includes the U.S. Embassy. We need to increase manpower and other measures to ensure that no ugly event occurs, Khurram Rasheed said.At least 10 armored vehicles and 16 police cars could be seen around the massive, fortress-like U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan, and a slightly larger number around the Israeli embassy there. Extra armed police also took up positions around the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait, which hosts a substantial U.S. military presence.Security outside the U.S. Embassy in Algiers was reinforced with several additional police officers. The leader of a dissolved Islamist party was arrested outside the embassy when he tried to deliver a letter there, according to the online news site Tout-sur-lAlgerie.American officials in Indonesia, the worlds most populous Muslim country, warned U.S. citizens to pay close attention to their surroundings and to avoid large crowds, even though there has been no public reaction to the film there so far.

US missions stormed in Yemen, stoned in Egypt film protest

Posted:

Demonstrators stormed the US embassy in Yemen on Thursday, leading to clashes in which four people were killed, while protesters stoned Washingtons mission in Cairo as anger spread over a US-produced film mocking Islam.A security official said 34 people were also wounded in the clashes that lasted from morning until late in the evening, and that eight were in serious condition.Witnesses said police fired live rounds tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters while troops deployed on rooftops of buildings around the mission in Sanaa.Earlier in the day police used water cannon and fired warning shots to expel protesters who breached the perimeter wall. One demonstrator was shot dead outside the compound as police battled to prevent any new incursion, with three others killed in successive clashes. The protests came as US and Libyan officials said they were probing a mob attack on the consulate in Benghazi that killed the ambassador and three other US officials on Tuesday, amid growing speculation it was the work of jihadist militants rather than just demonstrators. As Libya announced it made arrests, US Attorney General Eric Holder told an Arab forum in Qatar, the FBI has opened an investigation into the deaths and the attack on the consulate.Yemeni President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi apologised to his US counterpart Barack Obama and the American people for the acts of a mob and ordered a probe. Those who are behind (the attack) are a mob that are not aware of the far-reaching plots of Zionist forces, especially those who made a film insulting the Prophet, said Hadi. Some protesters said they saw three vehicles being torched by some of the demonstrators after they gained access to the compound through an unguarded security gate. After being evicted from the complex on their first assault, protesters retreated about 100 metres (yards) from the gate, gathering near a checkpoint where they chanted anti-Jewish slogans.Chanting O, messenger of Allah... O, Mohammed, the protesters then launched a second bid to access the compound, prompting police to fire on the crowd, witnesses said, and clashes continued until late in the evening.European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton condemned the violence and urged Yemeni authorities to boost security at EU diplomatic missions in Sanaa. We have urged the Yemeni authorities to reinforce security of EU missions in Sanaa and to take the necessary measures to protect diplomats, Ashton added.Violence also rocked the Egyptian capital Cairo, where police fired tear gas to disperse protests outside the embassy by stone- and bottle-throwing demonstrators.A total of 224 people were injured, the Egyptian health ministry said.On Tuesday night, protesters stormed the Cairo embassy compound, tearing down the Stars and Stripes and replacing it with a black Islamic flag.Egypts Islamist President Mohamed Morsi condemned the offence caused by the movie but warned against resorting to violence. We Egyptians reject any kind of assault or insult against our prophet. I condemn and oppose all who... insult our Prophet, he said on state television.(But) it is our duty to protect our guests and visitors from abroad, Morsi said. I call on everyone to take that into consideration, not to violate Egyptian law... not to assault embassies.

Peace envoy says Syria conflict getting worse

Peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said on Thursday the deadly conflict in Syria was getting worse as he arrived on his first official trip aimed at ending nearly 18 months of violence. We came to Syria to hold meetings with our Syrian brothers because there is a big crisis, and I think it is getting worse, the official SANA news agency quoted the UN-Arab League envoy as saying at Damascus airport.I think everybody agrees the need to stop the bloodshed and to restore harmony, and we hope that we will succeed, said Brahimi, who succeeded former envoy Kofi Annan who quit in frustration after his six-point peace plan for Syria foundered.Brahimi spoke after rebels were reported to have advanced into a key district of the northern city of Aleppo, where activists said at least 11 people were killed in a strike by a helicopter gunship.Brahimi later met Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, who said he was committed to ensure the success of Mr. Brahimis mission, the peace envoys spokesman Ahmad Fawzi.During the talks Brahimi emphasised that he would spare no effort to help find solution to the crisis, he said. His only masters in this endeavour were the Syrian people whose welfare and security were his prime concern. He has come to Damascus to listen and would also be meeting with representatives of the opposition and civil society, he added.Fawzi had said that Brahimi would be meeting President Bashar al-Assad. On Friday he is due to meet members of opposition groups tolerated by the Syrian regime.Brahimi was accompanied by Mokhtar Lamani, who will remain in Damascus to assume his new functions as head of office for the Joint Special Representative for Syria in the city.Earlier Moallems deputy, Faisal Muqdad said: We trust that Brahimi has a general understanding of the developments and of the way to solve problems despite the complexities. We are optimistic and we wish Brahimi success. However, the veteran Algerian diplomat highlighted to Arab League envoys in Cairo this week that he knows he faces an uphill struggle, with no sign of a lull in the violence. He told the envoys that he was approaching the crisis in Syria with his eyes open and the full knowledge that it was an extremely difficult task, a UN spokeswoman said.

A long-simmering volcano outside one of the Guatemalas most famous tourist attractions exploded into a series of powerful eruptions Thursday, hurling thick clouds of ash nearly two miles (three kilometers) high, spewing rivers of lava down its flanks and forcing the evacuation of more than 33,000 people from surrounding communities.Guatemalas head of emergency evacuations, Sergio Cabanas, said the evacuees were leaving some 17 villages around the Volcan del Fuego, which sits about six miles southwest (16 kilometers) from the colonial city of Antigua. The ash was blowing south and authorities said Antigua was not currently in danger, although they expected the eruption to last for at least 12 more hours. The agency said the volcano spewed lava nearly 2,000 feet (600 meters) down slopes billowing with ash around Acatenango, a 12,346-foot-high (3,763-meter-high) volcano whose name translates as Volcano of Fire.A paroxysm of an eruption is taking place, a great volcanic eruption, with strong explosions and columns of ash, said Gustavo Chicna, a volcanologist with the National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology. He said the cinders spewing from the volcano were settling a half-inch thick in many places. He said extremely hot gases were also rolling down the sides of the volcano, which was entirely wreathed in ash and smoke. The emergency agency warned that flights through the area could be affected. There was a general orange alert, the second-highest level, but a red alert south and southeast of the mountain, where, Chicna said, its almost in total darkness.Teresa Marroquin, disaster coordinator for the Guatemalan Red Cross, said the organization had set up 10 emergency shelters and was sending hygiene kits and water. There are lots of respiratory problems and eye problems, she said.

Leading British boxing promoter Frank Warren has labelled former England cricket captain Andrew Flintoffs professional ring debut as car crash television.Flintoff, the star of Englands 2005 Ashes triumph, has applied for his boxing licence and is due to fight at Manchesters MEN Arena on November 30 against an as yet unnamed opponent.BoxNation, a company in which Warren is involved, will screen the 34-year-olds first bout but the veteran promoter said: For me its car crash television, Ill be blunt about it.Im not taking anything away from him, its being shown on BoxNation which Im involved in, but I wont be promoting it.Meanwhile David Price, the British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion, was slightly more positive.Freddie (Flintoff) is as entitled as anyone to try it out and some people come to professional boxing later in life, Price said. But if its just some type of PR stunt then its disrespectful to boxing. The reality is he could get hurt if theres someone in front of him wholl stand up and throw punches back. Its car crash TV but will probably get people watching.

Oil rises after Fed takes steps to boost economy

Posted:

The price of oil closed above $98 a barrel for the first time in more than four months after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced aggressive steps to boost the U.S. economy. The Fed said Thursday it will spend $40 billion a month to buy mortgaged-back securities for an indefinite period. The purchases are intended to lower long-term interest rates to spur borrowing and spending. The Fed also extended a plan to keep short-term interest rates at record-low levels through mid-2015, as it attempts to boost an economy it says is too weak to reduce high unemployment.Benchmark oil closed at $98.31, up $1.30. The last time it finished higher was May 4.Expectations of action by the Fed, as well as the European Central Bank and Chinas government, have balanced gloomy economic news and kept oil in a narrow range the past few weeks.Phil Flynn of the Price Futures Group said he expects the Fed decision to reinvigorate the stock market and boost the price of oil. The increase in oil should be gradual, however, as traders continue to focus on key economic indicators, especially jobs numbers.Even this massive bond buying, its going to take some time to sink in, Flynn said.Traders on Thursday also kept a close eye on unrest in the Middle East.Protesters stormed the U.S. Embassy compound in Yemens capital Thursday, and there is violence around the U.S. mission in Cairo. The U.S. ambassador to Libya was killed Tuesday.Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, ended up 55 cents at $115.88 per barrel.Meanwhile, the average price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. rose to $3.87, the highest since April 21 and just 7 cents below the high for the year. Refiners have run short on supplies of summer blends of gas, particularly in the Northeast. Theyre allowed to start selling cheaper winter blends this weekend.Experts believe gas prices will soon start to fall. Gasoline futures dropped 3.9 cents to $2.962, on top of a 4.2 cent drop a day earlier.Natural gas dropped Thursday after the Energy Department said supplies rose last week.Natural gas in storage increased by 27 billion cubic feet to 3.429 trillion cubic feet for the week that ended Sept. 7. The supply is 11.1 percent more than the year-ago level of 3.087 trillion cubic feet and 9 percent more than the five-year average of 3.145 trillion cubic feet.Natural gas ended down 2.6 cents at $3.037 per 1,000 cubic feet.Heating oil, which had risen 2 percent over the first three days of the week, fell less than a penny to $3.2113.
