Man United beat Galatasaray 1-0 in Champs League Posted: Michael Carricks early goal proved enough for Manchester United on Wednesday as it hung on for an unconvincing 1-0 win over Galatasaray in their Champions League opener despite sloppy play and a missed penalty by the English club.Carrick put United ahead in the seventh minute as Alex Fergusons team looked determined to put last seasons disappointing group-stage exit behind it. Carrick received a pass in the area and was then tripped by Fernando Muslera as he rounded the Galatasaray goalkeeper, but maintained his focus and slotted the ball into the empty net while sitting down. But Galatasaray pegged United back after that and were unlucky not to equalize. The Turkish club hit the woodwork three times, had two penalty appeals rejected and forced a couple of good saves from David de Gea to leave Old Trafford scoreless. Its just great to get off to a winning start. Off the back of last year, not qualifying, it was vital we did, Carrick said. We defended well in the second half and were delighted to get the three points and move on.Nani could have made the game safe for United in the 52nd but missed a penalty when his weak spot kick was saved by Muslera.I think we expected a tough game. Galatasaray have a lot of experience, Ferguson said. There was a lack of concentration at times and its unusual for us to be as frivolous with the ball. In the second half we were more solid.Darren Fletcher came on as a substitute for United, marking his return a career-threatening bowel condition. Fletcher came on for Paul Scholes in the 89th for his first appearance since Nov. 22, 2011, and was given a standing ovation by the Old Trafford crowd.Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa made their European debuts for United and were both involved in setting up Carricks goal. But Uniteds attack largely fizzled out after the opener, and De Gea had to rescue United with a superb double save late on, first denying Burak Yilmaz, then Emre Colak from the rebound.
South Africa looks to end Zimbabwe's Twenty20 run Posted: South Africa hopes to end Zimbabwes World Twenty20 campaign on Thursday when the African teams meet in a Group D match.Sri Lanka crushed Zimbabwe by 82 runs in the tournament opener on Tuesday and another defeat will bring the curtains down on Zimbabwe as only the top two teams from the four groups advance to the Super Eights.South Africas Hashim Amla says his teammates were more interested in how the pitch played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in this southern port city, rather than the result.I think more importantly for us was how the wicket reacted and the kind of scores you are looking at (in) this ground and also the size of the field, Amla said. I think that was more important to us than what happened in the game. The staggering bowling figures of 6-8 from Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis on Tuesday would have encouraged the Proteas spinners, former captain Johan Botha and Robin Pietersen.Fast bowler Albie Morkel was nursing a back complaint and had a scan on Tuesday. But manager Mohammad Moosaji said the paceman will hopefully be available for selection.Zimbabwe coach Alan Butcher said it was a big disappointment to see his batsmen being dismissed for 100 in 17.3 overs after Sri Lanka posted a challenging 182-4.Obviously its our last chance to progress in the tournament and to do so we will have to put in a vastly improved performance than against Sri Lanka, he said. But we have to pick ourselves up and be positive against what we know is a very good side.
Watson leads Australia to 7-wicket win vs. Ireland Posted: Australia made the opening statement it was looking for in pounding Ireland by seven wickets in the World Twenty20 on Wednesday.Shane Watson spearheaded the Australians by taking 3-26 then hammering a brisk 51 off 30 balls, as they scored 125-3 with nearly five overs to spare in chasing down Irelands modest 123-7 before a sparse crowd in R. Premadasa Stadium. The cricket world had a little laugh at Australia earlier this year when it was overtaken briefly by Ireland in the T20 rankings. This made the first ever match between the teams a real test for Australia to prove that its No. 9 ranking, just one above Ireland, did not reflect its real strength. We knew how important it was to be able to make a statement today, more than anything (else), Watson said.We know with the quality of talent we have in our group, if we are at our best we are certainly going to be a challenge to the best teams in the world. Today was the first step along that way.Ireland captain William Porterfield said they were let down by the batting, as defending around six runs per over on a good pitch was too much for the bowlers to defend.Porterfield didnt help his side when he won the toss and elected to bat first and was dismissed on the first ball of the match. He tried to hook a Watson bouncer but ended up only top-edging the ball for an easy catch at deep fine-leg by Mitchell Starc.Watson and Starc were involved again in the dismissal of Paul Stirling when Irelands total was 15. The batsman sliced the ball against Starc, the left-arm seamer, and was well caught by Watson at third man.Ed Joyce tried to lift the ball over the infield against offspinner Glenn Maxwell but found David Warner at mid-off on 16. Left-arm chinaman bowler Brad Hogg broke through with his second delivery trapping Gary Wilson lbw for 5 in the eighth over.At 33-4 Ireland was precariously placed, then brothers Kevin (35) and Niall OBrien (20) combined for 52 to help set up a decent total.Kevin hit five boundaries during his 29-ball innings and Niall made 20 off 24 balls before Watson dismissed both in the 15th over, bowling Niall and, three balls later, having Kevin caught by wicketkeeper Mathew Wade.Kevin O Brien top-scored for Ireland with 35. Starc gave Watson good support in returning 2-20.Australia got off to a good start reaching 60 before losing Warner in the eighth over for 26. He was caught by a diving Kevin OBrien off left-arm spinner George Dockrell.Watson hit three sixes and five boundaries in his entertaining knock until he was run out to a brilliant direct hit from Trent Johnston.Australia had lost two wickets for four runs when Mike Hussey departed with the total on 95, but it was too late for Ireland to recover.

Indian army chief says no to demilitarisation of Siachen Posted: Indian army chief General Bikram Singh has said that India must continue to hold on to Siachen because of its strategic significance, even as Pakistan has stepped up demands for demilitarising the glacier citing prospects of long-term peace.“These positions are of strategic importance and we have conveyed our concerns to the government. Now it is for the government to take a call,” he said during a media interaction. He said the army’s views on Siachen had been consistent. He said a lot of blood had been shed to occupy the glacier, a 76-km river of slow moving ice.Several rounds of talks between India and Pakistan on demilitarising the Siachen have failed with Islamabad refusing to authenticate troop positions on the ground. The last round of defence secretary level talks held in Rawalpindi in June yielded no results.
Oil prices slide on talks of Saudi intervention Posted: Oil prices slumped by more than $3 Wednesday, with WTI crude below $92, on talk of increased Saudi Arabian supplies to help cool the market and a rise in US inventories, analysts said.New Yorks main contract, West Texas Intermediate crude for delivery in October, shed $3.31 to close at $91.98 a barrel. In London, Brent North Sea for November tumbled $3.84 to $108.19.Both the major crude oil contracts started the day a touch firmer as traders woke up to news that the Bank of Japan had joined the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank in announcing more monetary easing measures, said Fawad Razaqzada, an analyst at GFT Markets trading group. However a sharp sell-off soon followed on talks that Saudi Arabia, the worlds largest oil exporter, was planning to increase production to keep prices in check. The Saudi view that prices have pushed up too much was rekindled on Wednesday after the Financial Times said that the worlds biggest oil exporter had been offering customers extra supplies. The main thing was that there have been reports from those unnamed sources that the Saudis are going to attempt to push prices down, said James Williams of WTRG Economics.Thats getting some credibility. In addition, Williams said, an unexpected buildup in crude inventories in the US governments weekly petroleum supplies report also sent a bearish signal to the market. If you look at the world crude oil market, it is well supplied. On a current supply and demand basis, you couldnt even justify the current prices after the four dollar drop... you could easily argue for a crude oil in the $80 range, he said.

Pakistan wants a stable Afghanistan: Khar Posted: Foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar, flanked by Ambassador Sherry Rehman, kicked-off her first official meeting of the US capital Tuesday and her most important interaction was with the Senates select committee for intelligence, chaired by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California). The Foreign Minister conveyed that her visit was aimed at in-depth discussions on the ways and means to deal with the challenges confronting bilateral relationship. Pakistan, she stressed, wanted to build upon the recent positive momentum in order to strengthen Pak-US ties. However, it is important that Pakistans priorities, concerns and constraints are better understood by the US, she argued.Dunya News learnt that the Senators did raise question marks over Pakistans role in the fight against terror and the future of Afghanistan. The tone, however, remained conciliatory as the US administration is not willing to derail the efforts to bring the relationship back on track. The minister assured the Committee members that Pakistan was part of solution, and not part of the problem.Ms. Khar said an instable Afghanistan posed more danger for Pakistan than any other country adding that a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan is central to both the short and long term interests of Pakistan. We want a genuine dialogue with the US on Afghanistan, she said and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to use the trilateral mechanism for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process. The Foreign Minister also impressed upon the legislators that some of the statements from the US side against Pakistan had not served the relationship well because the people of Pakistan wanted their contributions and sacrifices in fighting terrorism recognized and appreciated. It is learnt that the lingering issue of Haqqani network and Dr. Shakeel Afridi was also raised by the members during the conversation. We have made extraordinary efforts and sacrifices to eradicate the terrorism and build a peaceful, stable South and Central Asia, she maintained while responding to a number of questions raised by the Senators on regional security, counterterrorism efforts, and reconciliation in Afghanistan.Earlier, the USAID Administrator, Dr. Rajiv Shah also called on the Foreign Minsiter and reviewed the state of economic collaboration and projects with US-assistance that are underway in Pakistan. Terming the US assistance an investment in the future of the relationship, FM Khar particularly appreciated USAID projects in the energy sector and road infrastructure.Ms. Khar appreciated the signing of the MoU for Peshawar-Torkham road, for which a sum of $70 million is being released, and believed that such large signature projects could be important symbols of the Pakistan-US partnership. She called for early convening of the working groups in priority areas like economy and finance, trade and market access, energy, and water, to further strengthen bilateral collaboration.Administrator Shah apprised the Foreign Minister of the USAIDs operational difficulties and security challenges in Pakistan. He pointed out the need to address these issues in order to carry-out USAID projects and for ensuring smooth and effective delivery of the assistance. The Foreign Minister also engaged with leading experts from different think-tanks in a candid conversation at the Pakistan embassy. She answered questions that are raised consistently about Pakistan in the US media and apprised them with the countrys policies and limitations vis-a-vis the war on terror.- Contributed by Awais Saleem, Dunya News correspondent in Washington, DC
