Bangladesh looks to Shakib for New Zealand upset

Posted:

Bangladesh will be hoping star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan shines with both bat and ball if they are to have a chance of upsetting New Zealand in the World T20 Group D opener here on Friday. The dashing 25-year-old left-hander has been promoted to number three in the last few matches to give an ideal start to the innings which is opened by another aggressive left-hander Tamim Iqbal.Hasan is also an effective left-arm spinner, often picking up some much-needed wickets in the middle overs.Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said Hasans presence gives strength to the team.Hasan is our best cricketer, said Rahim. Hasan is now playing more freely than ever before, not just with the bat and ball but also on the field and off it as well. His presence means a lot.Rahim, who replaced Hasan as captain last year, is confident his team will get through the group stage, where they will also meet 2009 champions Pakistan. We are confident of going through to the Super Eight. We are in a tough group. But our team is quite balanced so we need to get the basics right and if we execute our plans then we can beat any team in the world, said Rahim. The top two teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the Super Eight stage.Bangladesh have bitter memories of the only Twenty20 played between the two teams two years ago. They lost the match in Hamilton after being shot out for 78.New Zealand will wait on the fitness of Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee and Rob Nicol after the trio suffered gastric problems.Captain Ross Taylor hoped all three would be fit for the match. We dont know whether we will have the full quota of players because every couple of hours they are feeling a little better. The weather is bit colder so hopefully they can gain some energy and be available to play, said Taylor. In contrast to Bangladeshs reliance on spinners, New Zealand will look to seamers for wickets.I guess we will be looking to our seamers to have a big play in the tournament. A few of our players played in the Sri Lankan league (in August this year) and had some success, said Taylor, who believed the Bangladeshi left-arm spinners would not pose problems for his batsmen. We played a lot of left-arm spin in the nets because we will be playing at least 12 overs of left-arm spin. We need to play them well, said Taylor of Bangladeshs frontline spinners Hasan, Elias Sunny and Abdur Razzak.

England to face Afghanistan today

Defending champions Englands morale is brilliant after winning both Twenty20 World Cup warm-up games against Pakistan and Australia, captain Stuart Broad said on Thursday, the eve of their opening Group A match against Afghanistan. The 2010 winners beat Pakistan by 15 runs and the Australians by nine runs.We prepared really well, won both games over here and both have been very good tests for us, Broad told reporters.I am really delighted. The morale is brilliant. Everyone is excited about getting underway. Our preparations have gone as well as we hoped.Broad was asked how the team would cope in the absence of leading batsman Kevin Pietersen.Weve got world-class match winners in the side. Yes we have got guys who have played a lot of international cricket, Broad said.Weve got eight of those who won the World Cup three years ago and weve got players who can clear the ropes without a doubt, we have seen that in the last two games.Pietersen announced his retirement from limited-overs cricket this year before making himself available again in August. The South African-born batsman has been frozen out of the England set-up since allegedly sending provocative text messages about his own team mates to players in the South Africa side last month.KP has been around for a long time has done fantastically well for us, Broad said. Its back to the ECB at the moment that he is not here and we have to put up with that and get on with that. The 15 guys in the squad are excited to be here, out for the challenge and thats what you want coming into a tournament.Pietersen is in Sri Lanka as a commentator on the tournament.England will play India on Sunday with the top two advancing to the super eights.

Teenager Andre Wisdom scored Liverpools second goal on his debut, after an own goal by Juhani Ojala had given the Premier League side an early lead.Sebastian Coates added Liverpools other goal in his first European match.Raphael Nuzzolo, Ojala and Gonzalo Zarate found the net for Young Boys, which briefly led in the second half.In Israel, Cristian Rodriguez, Diego Costa and Raul Garcia all scored as Atletico made easy work of Hapoel, despite playing without star striker Radamel Falcao, who was rested for the Group B opener.French league leader Marseille had no such luck and had to score twice in the final eight minutes to rescue a 2-2 draw at Fenerbahce. Oil prices mixed in pause after sell-off

Posted:

Oil prices closed mixed Thursday after recent sharp falls as investors weighed prospects of weaker energy demand and abundant supplies.Data showing manufacturing activity in China, the worlds largest energy consumer, contracted for the 11th straight month in September hit sentiment.New Yorks main contract, light sweet crude for October, dipped 11 cents to settle at $91.87 a barrel in the contracts final trading day.The benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures contract has lost roughly $9 so far this week, including a third of it Wednesday following official data showing a surprisingly strong increase in US petroleum supplies. In London trade, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in November rose $1.84 to $110.03 a barrel.Despite the relatively unchanged oil price in New York, the WTI market remains weak after its recent price drop, said Tim Evans at Citi Futures.Evans noted that US inventories were 8.4 percent higher than a year ago, adding: Were very clearly not running out of oil.Crude demand worries were stoked after British banking giant HSBC on Thursday released data showing Chinas manufacturing sector still stuck in a rut, said Justin Harper, a strategist at IG Markets Singapore trading group. The China data has pushed down commodities after HSBCs flash PMI showed contraction for another month, he told AFP.Oil has been on the receiving end of this negativity towards the Chinese economy and more evidence of its continued slowdown. China is a major consumer of oil and any slowdown in its economy worries traders about future demand.

Pakistan to talk counterterrorism with US, Afghans

Posted:

Pakistans foreign minister revealed Thursday that her country would soon hold confidential talks with the United States and Afghanistan to improve a three-way counterterrorism relationship beset by misunderstandings, including one over the Pakistan-based Haqqani network that Washington considers the greatest threat to Afghan stability. But she refused to say whether her government was ready to take any action against the militants. In an interview, Hina Rabbani Khar said senior officials from the three countries have been instructed to come up with a strategy for repairing cooperation that has suffered since U.S.-Pakistani relations collapsed a year and half ago. That chill in relations was brought on by a CIA contractors killing of two Pakistanis, the unilateral U.S. raid on Osama bin Ladens compound inside Pakistan and the accidental killing of 24 Pakistani troops in November by NATO forces.A key element of the talks will be to determine which militant groups can be persuaded to lay down their arms as part of an Afghan peace treaty a key if so far lagging part of the U.S. strategy to stabilize the country as it withdraws forces over the next two years. This has to be a joint effort to determine who is a threat ... to determine how do we deal with those who are a threat, and how do we bring in those which are not, said Khar, who was in Washington on her first official visit since being appointed Pakistans top diplomat last year. We are willing to work with anyone against any forces which are a threat to peace and stability.Khar also addressed other contentious points in the U.S.-Pakistani relationship, heaping scorn on the doctor who allegedly helped the U.S. track down bin Laden in Pakistan last year and defending her governments decision to declare a national holiday on Friday so people can demonstrate against an American-made Internet video that ridicules Islam.Lawmakers have been demanding tough Pakistani action on the Haqqani network, which the Obama administration formally designated as a terrorist body on Wednesday. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told The Associated Press in August that he believed a Pakistani attack on the network would occur soon.A subsidiary of the Taliban and based in the remote North Waziristan region of Pakistan, the Haqqani network is responsible for several attacks in Kabul, Afghanistan, including last Septembers rocket-propelled grenade assault on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters. American officials estimate it has 2,000 to 4,000 fighters and that it maintains close relationships with al-Qaida.Khar dismissed the notion that Pakistan had any special responsibility to deal with the Haqqanis, lumping them in with the 5 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan. We would be happy to send each one of them back and live in peace in Pakistan, she said. But she refused to say whether her government would be willing in its three-way talks with the U.S. and Afghanistan to commit to taking on the Haqqanis militarily. The White House declined to comment on the counterterrorism talks, but U.S. officials familiar with the developments saw cause for optimism in the upcoming negotiations, which were worked out by President Barack Obamas chief Afghanistan and Pakistan advisers, Marc Grossman and Doug Lute, in a meeting last week with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.A working group will include top U.S. officials from the White House, State Department and Pentagon along with their Pakistani and Afghan counterparts, one current and one former U.S. official said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the talks publicly. The U.S. and Pakistan are also holding talks on other counterterrorism issues, including CIA drone strikes targeting militants in Pakistans lawless tribal areas, but the talks so far have produced no breakthroughs, U.S. and Pakistani officials say. Pakistan wants the drone strikes stopped or it wants to control the drones directly something the U.S. refuses.Khar called the working group a turning point. But she made it clear that Islamabad was not simply going to do Washingtons bidding, sharply criticizing Panetta for his comments about supposed Pakistani military operations.Khar said Panetta was speaking beyond his scope. He is obviously welcome to talk about what military action will take place by American troops, Khar said, but not Pakistans. And she pointed a finger back at the United States for the hundreds of militants crossing the border from Afghanistan and slaughtering our soldiers, including 17 troops who were beheaded recently.Khar also sought to explain the Pakistani decision to declare Friday a national holiday, saying the day of loving the prophet would motivate the peaceful majority to demonstrate their love for the Prophet Muhammad and not allow extremists to turn it into a show of anger against the United States. On Thursday, more than 2,000 people tried to reach the guarded enclave housing the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad to protest the anti-Islam video. Riot police used tear gas and batons against stone-throwing demonstrators, some of whom carried flags from hardline Islamist and al-Qaida-linked groups. We are very confident this will lessen the violence, Khar said, but acknowledged: There will always be elements that will try to take advantage of these things. And she hit back at criticism from the Obama administration and Congress over the treatment of Shakil Afridi, the doctor who is said to have run a fake vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA that might verify bin Ladens presence at the compound in Abbottabad where U.S. commandos found and killed him. Afridi was later convicted and sentenced to 33 years for high treason. He did not know who he was working for or what he was trying to achieve, so this great man who was helping the world by assisting us to capture Osama bin Laden is a myth, Khar said. He was up for hire by anyone who was paying him, she said, accusing him of links to an Islamist militant group and significantly setting back Pakistani efforts against polio. For us, hes no hero, believe me, she said. He is somebody whose activity has endangered our children.

UN urges Pakistan to tackle missing persons issue

Posted:

The United Nations has pressed Pakistans government and judiciary to do more to tackle the problem of thousands of people who have allegedly been detained by law enforcement and intelligence agencies and remain missing.A U.N. working group on enforced disappearances delivered its initial findings Thursday after a 10-day visit to Pakistan. One of the groups members, Olivier de Frouville, says they were invited by the Pakistani government. But the visit was clouded by complaints from Pakistani parliament members who claimed the groups presence was a violation of the countrys sovereignty.Several key institutions in Pakistan including the Supreme Court, the military and the all-powerful intelligence agency refused to meet with the group. Their lack of cooperation raises questions about how much impact the groups visit will have.

UK soldier unexpectedly gives birth in Afghanistan

Posted:

Hours after a British soldier in Afghanistan told medics she was suffering from stomach pains, the Royal Artillery gunner unexpectedly gave birth to a boy the first child ever born to a member of Britains armed forces in combat.Britains defense ministry said Thursday the soldier told authorities she had not been aware she was pregnant and only consulted doctors on the day that she went into labor. The soldier, who arrived in Afghanistan in March, delivered the child Tuesday at Camp Bastion, the vast desert camp in southern Afghanistans Helmand province where Prince Harry is deployed and a Taliban attack last week killed two U.S. Marines.Mother and baby are both in a stable condition in the hospital and are receiving the best possible care, the ministry said in a statement. It said a team of doctors would fly out to Afghanistan in the coming days to help the soldier and her son return safely to Britain. The U.K. does not allow female soldiers to deploy on operation if they are pregnant. Although the soldiers child was conceived before her tour of duty began in March, she is not likely to face censure. Britain has sent female soldiers home from wars after they became pregnant including about 60 from Afghanistan but hasnt previously had a servicewoman go into labor in a war zone.In 2009, the U.S. military in Iraq issued a policy that could punish soldiers who became pregnant there and their sexual partners then quickly rescinded it after a storm of criticism. The British soldier, a citizen of Fiji, is one of about 500 British military women serving in Afghanistan. She is also among around 2,000 Fijians who serve in the British military, even though the country became independent from Britain in 1970.Camp Bastion, which hosts the U.S. Camp Leatherneck, is home to most of Britains 9,500 soldiers in Afghanistan, including Prince Harry who arrived there earlier this month to serve as an attack helicopter gunner. Last Friday, a Taliban assault on the base ended up with two U.S. marines killed and six American fighter jets destroyed.Maj. Charles Heyman, a retired officer and author of The British Army Guide said the unexpected birth would cause some concern at the base. This sort of thing makes life difficult for everyone else, but the important thing is the welfare of the female soldier. This could have gone wrong and we dont know if the attack on Camp Bastion might have forced the birth, said Maj. Charles Heyman, a retired officer and author of The British Army Guide.Heyman said it may have been that the excitement of the tour masked the symptoms of the pregnancy.Belinda Phipps, chief executive of the National Childbirth Trust, a British parenting charity, also suggested the soldiers demanding work could explain why she either didnt know she was pregnant, or had attempted to ignore the signs. It could be that she was so very focused on other things, and because she was in a life-or-death scenario, that she simply didnt recognize that she was pregnant, Phipps said.Phipps said the pregnancy may not have been obvious to the soldiers colleagues. Not everyone has a very big baby bump, some women carry their baby far inside, she said.Patrick OBrien, a consultant obstetrician at University College London Hospital, said cases of unnoticed pregnancies were unusual, but that he encountered at least one each year. There are some women who have very irregular periods, often women who are very fit and exercise a lot. There are women who dont have sickness during pregnancy. Some women particularly those who are overweight dont recognize they have put on weight, or feel the baby moving, OBrien said. Many cases involved women who refused to accept that they were pregnant and attempted to disguise it, particularly young women living at home. Its not just that they hide the pregnancy from their parents, they often become in denial of the pregnancy, he said.If you have a combination of any or all of those things, a pregnancy can go undetected, or the woman can be in denial of it if the implications to their life are so great, said OBrien, a spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist.A study published in 2011 by Glasgows Victoria Infirmary said that denial of pregnancy was more common than expected, suggesting it occurred in around 1 in 2,500 births. In a 2002 German survey of Berlin obstetric hospitals, researchers found that 40 percent of women who didnt realize they were pregnant had seen doctors who also failed to spot the signs.

World's first biofuel jet to take off in Canada

Posted:

The worlds first flight powered entirely by bio jet fuel will take off next month from Ottawa, the fuel makers announced Thursday.Applied Research Associates and Agrisoma Biosciences partnered with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to develop a sustainable source of renewable energy for the commercial airline industry. In late October, a NRC Falcon 20 twin engine jet will be used to test the new jet fuel made from 100 percent oilseed, for engine performance and emissions. This will be the first time a jet aircraft is powered by 100 percent, un-blended, renewable jet fuel that meets petroleum jet fuel specifications, said an NRC statement.Through this initiative, we provide a sustainable option for reducing aviation emissions, said Chuck Red of Applied Research Associates.Several commercial aircraft during the climate summit in Rio last June used much-touted bio jet fuels mixed with traditional petroleum jet fuel.More than 40 farmers in western Canada were contracted to grow over 6,000 acres of the oilseed crop that was used to create the bio jet fuel. The government hopes this initiative will launch a new bio jet fuel industry that becomes a boon to growers.

US selling Indonesia eight Apache helicopters

Posted:

The United States is to sell eight Apache helicopters to Indonesia in a sign of strengthening ties aimed at boosting regional security, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday. After talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, Clinton said the US administration had informed Congress of the potential sale of eight AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopters to the Indonesian government. This agreement will strengthen our comprehensive partnership and help enhance security across the region, she told reporters, after they met for their third US-Indonesia joint commission. The administration of President Barack Obama is making a key policy pivot to boost ties in the Asia-Pacific region, as it seeks to try to fend off Chinas influence, and Clinton visited Jakarta earlier this month. The top US diplomat did not give a figure for how much the sale of the Boeing-made Apaches to the Indonesian military was worth, but the Jakarta Post has reported that the deal has been in the works for some time.Hailing their growing ties, Clinton said trade between the two nations topped $26 billion last year, while investments in transportation, energy, and infrastructure are creating jobs and supporting economic growth. The United States was also spending some $600 million over the next five years to fund clean energy development, child health and nutrition programs, and efforts to help make Indonesias government more transparent and open, Clinton said.Indonesia and the United States had built a strong foundation, she said, and alluding to tensions in the South China Seas added: One of our most important concerns is promoting peace and stability in the Asia Pacific.Jakarta and Washington had a comprehensive partnership, Natalegawa agreed, adding he wanted to reinforce and recall and reaffirm the fact that the importance of Indonesia-US relations extends beyond the bilateral. Our two countries now have worked very closely in a very productive and very mutually beneficial way, not only bilaterally, but increasingly within the regional setting as well.

Pietersen still in talks with ECB officials

Posted:

Pietersen has been in exile since sending text messages to South Africa players that contained criticism of then England skipper Andrew Strauss during the recent Test series. With reports circulating that Pietersen had also fallen out with several of his team-mates as a result of his behaviour, the South Africa-born star was axed for the final Test, the subsequent one-day series and the current World Twenty20 tournament in Sri Lanka.England managing director Hugh Morris claimed there are still issues to be resolved with Pietersen before he can return to the fold and Cook confirmed there was still some distance between the two parties as talks continue.Morris and ECB chief executive David Collier have been in Sri Lanka, where Pietersen is working as a television pundit for the Twenty20 World Cup, and it is believed they met the exiled star in a bid to continue the peace process.I did have a meeting with Kev and I have been involved in meetings. Clearly the issues havent been resolved and that is why he is not available for selection at the moment, Cook said on Thursday.Time hopefully will be a healer and we will be able to move on, but the issues will still have to be resolved before Kevin plays for England again. At this present time the issues havent been resolved and he cant be selected.Meetings are still going on in Sri Lanka at the moment. David Collier and Hugh Morris are out there as well.If the issues can be resolved, Kevin has said he is available for selection but at the moment that cant happen.Cook conceded Englands hopes of winning the forthcoming four-Test series in India have been hit by Pietersens absence. That is a given, Cook said. Kevin has proved in all conditions around the world that he is a world class player. His record suggests that in all forms of the game.It is a sad circumstance. Clearly he is a world class player and he is not playing for England at this precise moment in time.He will be missed but it gives opportunities to other players and they can do well. There is no reason these guys cant fill the gap there.
